...If Jesus had appeared rich and wealthy

i just recently read that the little town of nazareth, once thought to be non-existent, was discovered in 2009 or so. is that true? I read about it on a Christian website that seemed perfectly reasonable and legimate. It is interesting, how more and more of The Bible can now be supported w/ evidence, while at the same time...the world as a whole is increasingly "post-Christian."

As for the original topic...I think Jesus' humble station in life was part of His message to humanity. A lowly, "nothing special" peasant...who is also God, made flesh. Kind of a big deal, at a number of levels.

I was teaching kids before 2009 and I remember knowing a lot of things about Nazareth.
That doesn't sound right to me re what you posted.
I even knew the population there.

I hate using the net to find out anything. If I post something, it has to be something I already know from other sources. I don't trust it.

For sure Jericho was thought to be non-existant.
Try to find out some more stuff about Nazareth from other sites...
So much was known about it pre-2009...

Jesus, as a human being, is the context of His being "poor".
So, on one hand, He became the mortal human flesh, who set aside His position as GOD, and became a "man".
So, in that context, we see His poverty, as we consider Deity becoming flesh.
On the other hand, John 1:10 says that Jesus stood on the world He created.
So, i dont think you can be "poor" and at the same time be the owner and creator of everything that is created.
So, yes, he set aside His divinity and became "one of us", which reflects His laying down His riches.
So, in THAT sense, we see His poverty regarding the laying aside of His riches, as you can't be more rich then to be the owner (Creator) of it all.
And while He does own it all, He DID lay it all down to become a human.......to become one of us.....and in this we discover the meaning of His poverty, which is reflected in His willingness to set aside Divinity and become human.
 
To answer someone's question about how I know Jesus was not poor. I don't know it for a fact.

I had a minister with a Phd. who spent decades studying the life of Jesus, the geography, and society Jesus grew up in and was raised. He was certain that Joseph was striving and successful and that the friends and social circles Jesus was in were likewise so.

I have heard everything from the Jesus was a hobo to the Jesus was an "illegal alien" political slants.

The fact is Jesus was and is the perfect man and perfect God. I never saw Jesus anywhere mock anyone because of their wealth or even for the fact they were soldiers. It was only against the "religious" and "greedy" and "two faced" that Jesus warned against. The fact is regardless of social status as Christians the mission is to try to build the kingdom here on earth in the short time we have. Messiah complexes are not for me.
