Is the bible reliable?

The Book referenced, I have found, exceedingly profitable when dealing with an honest Seeker. A much better, though not as readable is Christian Encyclopedia of Apologetics. Having reached a point that is nearing the end of my Earthly Journey, I passed all of my Sermon Outlines, Commentaries and books on Christian Apologetics off to a younger man that has surrendered to the Ministry of the Word.

Although it is ever more and more common for pretenders to enter the Church Body and sow the seeds of distrust, it never fails to astonish me when a person, professing the name of the Christ makes statements like, "What does it matter?" In the last chapter of Matthew, in the last three verses of this chapter, the Christ left us with one Mandate, we are to reach the Lost!

Many times, the one who disparages the book, will have no problem recommending other books, written by men who are never referenced in scripture! A red flag in and of itself actually, lol.

All you people have is history, not the Holy Spirit.
No insight, no revelations.
You call this Christianity?
You are missing what Christianity is all about.
That's a serious assessment, that we don't have the spirit. You base this on the fact some have a trust but verify policy concerning the bible? I know the spirit is in me, because I would not always have a very Christian response to people. It's the spirit in me that gives me the strength to kill those thoughts and bear the fruits of the spirit...patience, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, love, joy....qualities I see in the people you said don't have the spirit.

If you don't care about history, how can you tell you aren't following a Jesus of your own design?

That is one of my major red flags when trying to deal with errant teachings. Many of them are simple errors but from simple errors grow minor and major heresies and the modern New Testament and New Covenant Christians appear to use the word heresy as a red flag and tend to, it has been my experience, never judge the fruit nor to dig into the very books the New Testament is teaching and commenting on.

It can be discouraging.

th1b,taylor: never judge the fruit nor to dig into the very books the New Testament is teaching and commenting on.

I'm not sure I'm following you on this brother. Could you expound just a little for me.

I don't like when we marginalize intelligence with statements like "there is no private interpretation" and "you need to be led by the Spirit". Okay, well many millions of Christians claim to be led by the Spirit, yet we have dozens of different groups claiming such. Even here in these forums we have a diversity of beliefs. Accusations and sparks tend to fly, and there's a reason for that. Everyone thinks they're right and that the rest of the world is wrong. Anyone who is a little different gets marked as a "heretic" because they're different from the "main Church line" (whatever that is)

This is especially where I take issue. A very wise man once said: "I do not feel obliged to believe that the same God who endowed us with sense, reason, and intellect, intended us to forgo their use." I don't throw my brain away to be a Christian or to read the Bible. What I interpret may be different from you, and yet both of us can still be led by the Spirit. There is no threat in diversity. God is the God of all. Yes, of course we should debate and discuss, but with accusations comes the presupposition that you're right, and that's pretentious. If you think you're right, you need to meet others at the level of equality and leave it all on the table. I feel that the reason people lash out against intelligence is because they're afraid of diversity. They're afraid that somehow God will be diminished.

If God didn't like diversity and all these shades of grey, why is there such diversity in our universe? Why did God choose the weirdos to fulfill his will time and time again? Why as humans are we so diverse?

I for one and am not threatened by the fact that we as a Church are so diverse. To me it strengthens us because it gives us the opportunity to reach out to so many more people. I embrace that diversity...so if you have a different perspective, I may strongly disagree, but I will defend your right to your beliefs.

There's certainly a line that shouldn't be crossed, but that's another discussion.

If I may? I believe...that God did not endow us with sense, reason, and intellect and He did intend to forgo their use! We were created in Gods image, and God is a spiritual being. In the Garden of Eden, before the fall, we walked with God. We were spiritual beings also. We did not think with our minds and intellect. We "thought" from the core of our being...our...heart if you will. We lived for the Spirit and were led by a wonderful generous God. We did not have the knowledge of good and evil, which is to say, we did not think with our minds! The very first thing that Adam & Eve thought after eating the fruit from the tree of knowledge of good and evil, was of themselves. Hey we're naked. They became self conscious and prideful. It's easy to think that we were endowed by God to use our intellect because it is all that us end-timers have ever known and conditioned to use.

Think about it. This is why the scripture tells us that we must be "born again" and the old man must die and be put off, and the Spirit of God put on. ...There is a way which seems right to a man, but in the end it leads to death. Lean not upon thine own understanding... Why else would it say that a "renewing of the heart and mind" will take place as we seek God? Or that, we are to live for the spirit, and not for the flesh? Eh? ;)

Agreed, it is very pretentious to come with accusations and the presupposition that one is 'right' and the other therefore wrong. There is one body, one spirit, and one truth. There is no grey in heaven. It is black or white, brother. Light and darkness. Truth and lies.

In the body of Christ, differences will arise. This is simply that one is in a different place in their walk. Some are babes in Christ, some are mature. Others will not put off the old man and put on the new because 'they're too smart for that'. This would be the core of the message that the wise will become as fools, and the "fools" will be wise. Because the Lord is not about head knowledge, He is about Spirit knowledge.

I'm not saying that "I am right". I am saying this is what I believe and where I am at.

You must be kidding. NOWHERE in scripture does it say that intelligence is not of God. We are made in the image of God, and God is intelligent, therefore we are intelligent. It is a gift from God. If we want to throw intelligence out the window, I would suggest spending life with chimpanzees...actually no they're too smart. How about an amoeba? I think that's pretty low on the intelligence scale.

Adam was thinking for himself long before sin entered the equation:

"Then the man said,
“This at last is bone of my bones
and flesh of my flesh;
she shall be called Woman,
because she was taken out of Man.”" -Genesis 2:23

In fact, that there is logical statement, something only produced from an intelligent being. Adam was intelligent before sin.

Black and white is simple, and the universe is too complex for such simple thinking. Fine, if those who are not so bright want to have a simple universe, they can, but the moment they start to criticize those of us with sharp minds, I will object strongly.

"Others will not put off the old man and put on the new because 'they're too smart for that'." This is inflammatory, and you know it. Don't stoop to that level.

Here, here's something meaty for you. Heed the words of God please:

“Come now, let us reason together, says the Lord:
though your sins are like scarlet,
they shall be as white as snow;
though they are red like crimson,
they shall become like wool." -Isaiah 1:18

The Bible is very reliable and it is self-substantiating. It wrote history before it happened and with a supernatural accuracy. Even the doubters to this which say oh it was written after the fact...just keep an eye on Damascus, Syria. Scripture says that Damascus will fall in one night and will be reduced to rubble. To me, this sounds an awful lot like a nuke.

It has not happened yet, we know that. Keep an eye on it, we know it's coming. When it happens there will be no reason to doubt anymore.

You lost me on that one. I'm not sure what you mean. Too early, too little coffee, too little sleep I guess.

Your opinion was wrong. Opinions don't come from experience, but, from thought.

First off, unless you are contradicting an opinion with concrete Biblical truth, who are you to say if someone's opinion is right or wrong?

To address your comments concerning ignoring the past for the sake of the present, we can look to Jesus for what he thinks. He made it explictly clear that He himself did not come to abolish the Law and the Prophets (the OT), but to fulfill them. The past is incredibly important, the history of the nation of Israel is actually what made the story and work of Jesus so amazing when looking in context. It gives new meaning to what Jesus did while here on earth, which IS important. There is life, death on a cross, and resurrection. Without one happening as it did, the Gospel is not the Gospel.

And to address the last part of your actual comment I quoted, I'm not disagreeing about the thought piece, but rather that opinions don't come from experience. "Sunday is my favorite day of the week." That is certainly an opinion. But why is Sunday my favorite day of the week? Well, I have church, there is football, and mostly relaxation on Sunday. Those are all experiences that cause me to hold an opinion on a particular day of the week. Why can opinions not come from experiences? In fact, I'd go as far to say that A LOT of opinions have roots in experiences we have throughout life.

Are you saying you disagree with Gods word?

Tristan: You must be kidding. Intelligence is from God, for He created all. It was not a gift from God, we 'stole it' from the tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil, and were commanded to not eat from it.

Genesis 2: 16-17
16 And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat:
17 But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die./(KJV)

Throw intelligence out the window? Uh, yes brother, yes. Being created in the image of God, we were spiritual beings and did not need intelligence, we were not intended to think intelligently, but spiritually. From our (heart?) core of our being I believe, but definitely not from our head. We were to look to God almighty to care for us and direct our paths. I think this is made clear in Genesis, and can be easily surmised, but just in case we do not get it, it is repeated for us elsewhere in scripture, for it is important.

Proverbs 3: 5-6
5 Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.
6 In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths./(KJV)

Proverbs 14: 12
12 There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death./(KJV)

1 Corinthians 3: 18-19
18 Let no man deceive himself. If any man among you seemeth to be wise in this world, let him become a fool, that he may be wise.
19 For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, He taketh the wise in their own craftiness./(KJV)

1 Corinthians 3: 20
20 And again, The Lord knows the thoughts and reasonings of the [humanly] wise and recognizes how futile they are./(AMP)

Colossians 2: 8
8 See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the elemental spiritual forces[a] of this world rather than on Christ./(NIV)

James 3: 14-16
14 But if you harbor bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth.15 Such “wisdom” does not come down from heaven but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic.16 For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice./(NIV)

Romans 8: 5-6
5 Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires.6 The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace./(NIV)

Intelligence can be good, but it must be entirely focused upon God and the Spirit. To try to rely upon it for anything more than...prayer, is a deception and it should be thrown out the window as you said. We are not to lean upon our own understanding. We are to focus upon the Lord every moment of every day and look to the Spirit to direct our paths. Like a little child, knows not, but knows to look to daddy and hold his hand to care for them and to lead them where they are supposed to go.

What about prophecy? With all the signs and prophecies coming to past. Who's real and who's not? Has anyone seen the testimonies of this so-called prophet of Facebook-- "Prophet Levar Samuel". He has this fan page full of testimonies. Do you guys think those people made up these things? I'm searching for truth and I would like to know if any of you believe in actual prophecy anymore.

Without having looked at Levar Samuels page, I can say that I absolutely believe in prophecy nowadays. The Lord most certainly gives people the gift of prophecy and words of knowledge. Why wouldn't He? The Lord has done it for men all down through the ages, why would He stop now?

The Lord doesn't change, we know that. Scripture says to desire and ask/pray for prophecy above all else of the gifts. So were these words for men of old only? Not hardly brothers and sisters. Prophecy is alive and well in todays modern world, and needed perhaps moreso than ever considering the state of the world and the season.

Are all prophets always right all the time? Maybe maybe not. No one part of the body has all of the answers, that is well established. I would think that if the Lord gives prophetic insight/vision to a man then of course it will be right, and always. But it's like anything else, there will be some frauds, and perhaps others who may think that they have received a prophecy and perhaps merely thought he did and in fact did not. I don't know. What I do know is that everything should be questioned and prayed about for ourselves. We have to do our own homework, lol.

I think that John Paul Jackson is a prophet. I have watched many of his videos on youtube and heard him speak on such things. He said that at times he has dreams and in them he will see newspapers and their headlines, which is the prophecy. I do not know how accurate he is with his prophecy, but think that he is a man to watch and consider. One of his prophecies/headlines that he saw was about Japan. Earthquake; Seven million dead, or something like that. That's one to watch for.

JPJ is also a dream interpreter and teaches about understanding dreams and their meanings. I like him. God bless his ministry.

No matter how many times i see this and roll my eyes it won't go away.. This ones called A New Eye Opener..

Why all the controversy about the King James Bible? Because modern Christian scholarship has CHANGED the Greek Textus Receptus, from which the King James Bible was translated, in 6,000 PLACES!

This is why we have so many omissions in the "modern" versions of the Bible. Words omitted, in brackets, parentheses, or italics, are counted as NOT AUTHENTIC according to BRAINWASHED modern scholarship, represented in part by Griesbach, Lachmann, Tischendorf, Tregelles, Alford, Wordworth, Westcott and Hort.

Here's a list of JUST 200 of these changes. Why don't you go through this list and see how many have been changed in YOUR Bible? It might shock you!
