Jason,
you might be interested in a book named 'New Lies For Old' by ex-KGB defector Golitsyn. He and his family defected by the '60's from Finland. He went to our U.S. State Dept. with a warning about Soviet disinformation, warning them about how they'd misinterpreted the Soviet long-range strategy for takeover of the West. He wrote that work in 1984, and predicted the Soviets would allow the Berlin Wall to come down if their third and final disinformation phase upon the West was ripe. Our State Dept. refused to listen to him, but gave him permission to make public what he'd written. He wrote another work in the late 1990's called The Peristroika Deception.
In a nutshell, he shows how the Soviets changed their long-range strategy right after Stalin's days, because Stalin's persecutions upon the Russian people easily made the Soviet's look bad to the rest of the world. It put Communism in a bad light. So in the late 1950's after Stalin's death, a more peaceful strategy was developed, which included the idea of 'democratization' of Russia and its satellite states. It was called the NEP (New Economic Policy), formulated in 1958. Solidarity in Poland, independence of parties in Poland and the old satellite states, he shows is all a hoax, to draw the West in for the kill. He showed in the third final phase the Communists scissors strategy is with both Russia and Red China together attacking the West, closing the scissors.
Evidently some of our guys knew of this, for Cleon Skousen, an FBI agent of 16 years listed 45 points of Soviet long-range strategy against the West in his 1958 work The Naked Communist.
