Back then, the several times God punished Isreal it was because they turned away from Him. They disobeyed many of the laws, went to idolatry, murder, theft, and injustice was rampant, or even with some of the idol worship a call to sacrifice children or a rise in prostution and their prostution shrines. As far as I'm aware those are the examples and reasons given that God punished Israel for. The lesson is both 1) what counts as turning away from God, and 2) what happens as a result of turning away from God (murder, theft, injustice).
