Someone responded on another forum to my "What is the Bible" question with the below;

One thing that popped into my head when people said "God's word" was John 1--And the word became flesh (presumably Jesus)

Why then the focus on the bible? To me, it would be similar to hanging on to the instruction manual for an ipad instead of picking up the ipad and becoming familiar with it by using it.

Best thing I've read all day.

The Bible is God speaking to us. Yes Jesus is the Word, and The Word speaks to us what His will is, and who he is. If we want to know His will, read His Word.

i will throw a wrench into this easily.

first off while the bible is inspired. not all in it reflects Gods nature. its also a guide for living and also a warning what happens when men sin. the word in john that to me implies the torah.bear with me. the torah in jewry reflects gods nature and he made the week with that in mind. jesus is that law written in men's hearts. thus the torah. to further confuse you. the torah means not the law but teaching. for it teaches you of love and what love is.

chew on that nugget. and romans 9 or 10 says nearly that.

Blev, Jasoncran,

I think you guys are nothing but Bible literalists. I think that's wonderful!

From several posts of yours that I have read, I'd say you have a pretty good head on your shoulders. And I'm not talking about the hair :lol

Hi Blev,

I've grown kind of fond of my wig over time. Maybe I should buy some tights to go along with it. :) You're very kind, Blev.

Good analogy. But wait for the literalists to respond.

Wait for it . . . wait for it . . .

It sure would save a lot of paper and ink!

Just kidding.

"And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth." -John 1:14

The way I interpret this is exactly what it says. The Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us. If you were alive back then to hang out with Jesus, you could ask Him anything and He would give you the answer(except for maybe when the things listed in the 24th chapter of Matthew will happen). He was God in the flesh. Sitting here in 2012, all you have are the Words of God in the Bible, whether it be from the flesh or a burning bush. Use them.

How would we know that the word became flesh, if we did not have the bible?

of course i take the bible literally where it speaks that it such and metaphorically where it has symbol.

How do you discern whether symbolism is being used?

yes, only the Word/Spirit of Jesus is the True

Revelation 19:9-10 "And he(i.e. highest Saint/Angel) saith unto me, Write, Blessed are they which are called unto the marriage supper of the Lamb. And he saith unto me, These are the true sayings of God. And I fell at his feet to worship him. And he said unto me, See thou do it not: I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren that have the testimony of Jesus(i.e. of the only (true) Lord): worship God(i.e. That One Who really is the true God): for(i.e. because only) the testimony(or: the Word/Spirit which comes direct(-ly)) of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy(i.e. of the true prophecy)."

Blessings

learn the jewish idioms and take what they say for the most part on non-messianic prophecies and also even some of those. they know the verses and its the same. just ignore when they say he has hasnt come.

but first let God lead that one. eschatology is the place i learned them the most.

whether right or wrong, the Bible should always be taken literally first.
if it doesn't make sense, then look for the figurative or symbolic meaning instead.

I hope you noticed the inherent contradiction in your logic.

How would you determine if, and when, the Bible is 'wrong'?

This is an important issue and serves to focus on the issue which is at hand - that the scriptures speak to us differently as individuals and differently at varying times. How can we rationalize our understanding of the Bible at the age of say 18, and then again at 60? This then raises what place does personal experience play in the equation.

Proverbs 15:5 A fool despiseth his father's instruction: but he that regardeth reproof is prudent.

Proverbs 15:32 He that refuseth instruction despiseth his own soul: but he that heareth reproof getteth understanding.

Proverbs 29:15 The rod and reproof give wisdom: but a child left to himself bringeth his mother to shame.

2 Timothy 3:16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:

Proverbs 12:1 Whoso loveth instruction loveth knowledge: but he that hateth reproof is brutish.

2 Timothy 3:16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:

The Bible is instruction, conviction, loves grace, promises of blessings and cursing. Full of history, poetry and prophecy. It speaks literal where the literal is understood in it's simplicity and also speaks Spiritually, but only to those who walk in Gods Spirit. It's all Gods living word given to those who are called by His name and have answered His call to grace that allows us to walk worthy of being called His children. The Bible calls us to take off the blinders to experience that which is Christ so we can be part of His kingdom of heaven and continue in His works as we wait patiently for His glorious return. The main part of the Bible is application. One has to apply the words of God to their own personal life to only see God working in them and through them.

Psalms 34:8 O taste and see that the LORD is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in him.

every culture uses idioms. isnt it smart to learn the jewish idioms? ie light is one of them. in genesis its means that god moved on the earth(genesis one) yes it can be literally light but it also has that side to it.
