Bible Study JESUS MAKES US FREE - FROM WHAT?

John tells us that Jesus will make us free.
Free from what?
Or to what?

John 8:31-44

31So Jesus was saying to those Jews who had believed Him, “If you continue in My word, then you are truly disciples of Mine;
32and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.”
33They answered Him, “We are Abraham’s descendants and have never yet been enslaved to anyone; how is it that You say, ‘You will become free’?”
34Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who commits sin is the slave of sin.
35“The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son does remain forever.
36“So if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed.
37“I know that you are Abraham’s descendants; yet you seek to kill Me, because My word has no place in you.
38“I speak the things which I have seen with My Father; therefore you also do the things which you heard from your father.”
39They answered and said to Him, “Abraham is our father.” Jesus said to them, “If you are Abraham’s children, do the deeds of Abraham.
40“But as it is, you are seeking to kill Me, a man who has told you the truth, which I heard from God; this Abraham did not do.
41“You are doing the deeds of your father.” They said to Him, “We were not born of fornication; we have one Father: God.”
42Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love Me, for I proceeded forth and have come from God, for I have not even come on My own initiative, but He sent Me.
43“Why do you not understand what I am saying? It is because you cannot hear My word.
44You are of your father the devil, and you want to do the desires of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth because there is no truth in him. Whenever he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own nature, for he is a liar and the father of lies.

Free from the fear of believing something untrue is one. He said if he DO what he teaches, we will come to know the truth. Knowing the truth and knowing you know it, generates an indescribable freedom. One is not afraid of questions or threats to one’s faith. One can learn more about the ways of God because the foundation is rock solid truth. It’s an astounding freedom.

I guess implicit in the OP is also the question WHAT IS THE TRUTH?

I've understood this to mean free from the bondage of sin. Like He said, "Everyone who commits sin is a slave of sin." Jesus sets us free from that enslavement for with Him we can overcome sin. The wages of sin is death but, "God so loved the world that He sent His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved." John 3:16-17 JKJV

We will still make mistakes but, "In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world. John 16:33 NKJV

I agree.
When we're slaves to the evil one, our mind is clouded and we are forever tempted to do his evil...even if to us humans it might not seem so bad.

Walking with God clears out mind and let's us see the truth...the truth being that we are truly free to decide as we wish to, and if we're abiding with Jesus, our desires will be with Him.

Yes. Free from the bondage of sin.
(and the sin nature).

That's correct, WIP. "Slave of sin" equates to not being free from sin, i.e. still being bound as a slave. Yet those who abide in His word would be set free. The Pharisees were bound by a whole host of sins (Matthew 23:13-36).

Thus, Jesus said to the Jews while still in the presence of the Pharisees, whom He had just spoken to:

31... “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. 32 And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” 33 They answered Him, “We are Abraham’s descendants, and have never been in bondage to anyone. How can You say, ‘You will be made free’?” 34 Jesus answered them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, whoever commits sin is a slave of sin. 35 And a slave does not abide in the house forever, but a son abides forever. 36 Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.

Yes. Free from the bondage of sin.
(and the sin nature).

There is actually a Jewish tradition that meditating upon the word of God itself was the primary way of being delivered from sin, though I don't recall what scriptures that teaching was based off of. Probably something in the Pentateuch.

Isaiah 26:3-4 was similar in principle.

You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You. Trust in the Lord forever, for the Lord God is an everlasting Rock.

D-D-W might be able to give some insight to the Jewish Tradition you're referring to.

And I do believe that meditating on the Word of God AND on the WORD (Jesus) keeps us somewhat safe but we should never feel totally safe and have our guard down.

Free from sin.
Yes. Free from sin.
Are you one that believes we never sin after being born again?
We have a couple of members here that believe this.

I'd say free from the constant temptations from the evil one.
And I do believe the evil one knows HOW best to tempt us.

No no no absolutely not.
Soldiers,
We can also say that Jesus not only frees us from the slavery to sin caused by the evil one by temptation,

but our Lord and Savior also frees us from the guilt associated to sinning...
The sinning in our past before we became aware of how hurtful it was to God.

And if we feel guilt in a humanly way, at least we can be certain that the sin for which we ask forgiveness is truly forgiven.

The word...
We Are Free INDEED, means much more than just indeed.
It means surely, certainly, in reality, in truth, truly.

From the above we learn that:

1. If we want to be disciples of Jesus we must abide in His word. (His teachings).
2. The TRUTH will make us free. Jesus is the truth. What He teaches is the truth.
3. Jesus words have no place in those He was speaking to.
4. The listeners were doing the things of THEIR father (satan).
5. They though that being the descendants of Abraham was enough to save them - but it wasn't.
6. IF God were their Father they would listen to Jesus.
7. It's important to know what Jesus was telling them-
8. They were of satan and in him there is no truth.

We are truly free ONLY when we abide in Jesus and obey God's rules and commandments -
otherwise we are slaves of satan.

I guess implicit in the OP is also the question WHAT IS THE TRUTH?
Actually people know what is true. Just tell a lie about to them to them and they will respond with a demonstration that show they know the truth for sure. Anyone trying to parse the truth or make it a philosophical discussion are likely wanting to get out of the naked truth. Pilot knew Jesus was innocent. That was the truth. But he asked the question as though it is nebulous. The guilty like to make truth nebulous.

In the whole scenario of John 8:31-44 we come down to vs. 44 which IMO is the key verse.

John 8:44 Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.

We have been made free from sin and the father of lies who spreads his false doctrines manipulating those who have no knowledge as they refuse the truth of the word of God that leads them to false doctrines that lead them astray. He comes to kill, steal and destroy.

Amen.
I agree whole heartedly.
I think we can say that Jesus came to liberate us
from spiritual slavery.

Adam sold us, and Jesus bought us back.

I've understood this to mean free from the bondage of sin. Like He said, "Everyone who commits sin is a slave of sin." Jesus sets us free from that enslavement for with Him we can overcome sin.
And, I might add, ultimate hell.

Whatever exactly that may be, we'd all like to avoid that, I hope.
