Jesus said:
John 1:18 “No one has seen God at any time.”
However, there are many stories in the Old Testament of people seeing God. For example, Moses, Aaron, Nadab, Abihu and seventy elders of Israel saw God:
Exo 24:9 Then Moses went up, also Aaron, Nadab, and Abihu, and seventy of the elders of Israel,
Exo 24:10 and they saw the God of Israel.
God said in Exodus that no man shall see God and live. He said:
Exo 33:20 "You cannot see My face; for no man shall see Me, and live."
However, there are accounts where individuals saw God’s face and lived. Jacob reported not only that he saw God, but that he saw God “face to face,” yet lived (Gen 32:30) after wrestling with a “Man” (Gen 32:24) who Jacob surmised was God:
Gen 32:24 Then Jacob was left alone; and a Man wrestled with him until the breaking of day.
Gen 32:25 Now when He saw that He did not prevail against him, He touched the socket of his hip; and the socket of Jacob's hip was out of joint as He wrestled with him.
Gen 32:26 And He said, "Let Me go, for the day breaks." But he said, "I will not let You go unless You bless me!"
Gen 32:27 So He said to him, "What is your name?" He said, "Jacob."
Gen 32:28 And He said, "Your name shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel; for you have struggled with God and with men, and have prevailed."
Gen 32:29 Then Jacob asked, saying, "Tell me Your name, I pray." And He said, "Why is it that you ask about My name?" And He blessed him there.
Gen 32:30 So Jacob called the name of the place Peniel: "For I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved."
There are other accounts where God manifested himself in various forms in the Old Testament and was seen by men and women who subsequently lived. For example, the “Lord” appeared to Abraham and promised he would have a son:
Gen 18:1 Then the Lord appeared to him by the terebinth trees of Mamre, as he was sitting in the tent door in the heat of the day.
The “Son of God” appeared in the furnace with Shadrach, Meshach and Abed-Nego and was seen by King Nebuchadnezzar:
Dan 3:25 "Look!" he answered, "I see four men loose, walking in the midst of the fire; and they are not hurt, and the form of the fourth is like the Son of God."
How can we reconcile all of these accounts of men seeing God and living with Jesus’ statement that “no one has seen God” and God’s statement that “no man shall see Me, and live”?
