So this Saturday I will be going to an 8 hour class in order to meet the state requirements to be a licensed Uniformed Security Guard. There isn't much problem here, as prayer is concerned, it's a pretty straight forward class. I will, however, need some serious prayer in order to use this license to score a job in the security field. It will not only be a job, but it will be a great job for when I apply to a PD because they look for prior experience like that.

Also, I will (hopefully) be taking the EMT classes next month so that I can become an EMT. This is mainly for the added bonus of being a resume enhancer. I'm a white guy, so I need something to set me a part from all the other white guys who apply for the PD, this is one way of doing it. It also happens that being an EMT would be a nice job as well. The prayers in this case are so that I can get the 800$ needed in order to take the class. And then down the road a ways I will need some prayers to pass the exam (which shouldn't be hard because I'm pretty good at taking exams).

I also have some job applications that are pending. It'd be nice to get some good news from those.

Lastly, I'm applying for the town VFD. With any luck they will approve me and I will pass the physical exam and then I will be a part of the VFD (classes pending, of course).

Ian, here's some advice now that will help a lot in the future if you haven't already done it. Get on linkedin.com, create a profile, and start building your connections now. Regardless of the career path someone is choosing, this is a crucial tool in networking and getting a leg up on others. I just signed on with a new company and start one week from Monday. Linkedin played a huge role in getting the inside track. But, this isn't something you can do overnight. It takes time to establish a strong network. Start building it for the future.

I'll stop there, because you might have already done this. If you haven't and have any questions on how to use it best, I can elaborate.
:nod

Good luck! I admire your straight forward thinking and career building goals. I see that lacking all around me these days. Prayers to you.

Thanks guys. Heading to the gym now, but I'll look at that site when I get home.:thumbsup

A little update. Apparently the EMT class requires approval before I can even get in. I'm sure I will be approved, but you know how these things go.

Got into the EMT class. Starts on June 13th. Pretty pumped for that.

I'm now a certified and licensed Uniformed Security Guard in the state of Connecticut, all I need now is for the summer to end so I can use that to get a job. At that point I will also be a certified EMT-B with NREMT. My goal is to get a job working at Pratt and Whitney as a security guard, as they make a respectable 21$ per hour and the main Pratt plant is about two miles down the road from me (literally down the road). I've got my fingers crossed that they will want a 20 year old college kid for a part-time job there. I say part time because I also plan to be working for the EMT service for my town and I'll be a member of the town's Fire-Police by then, so I'll need some flexible hours. Otherwise I'll just go EMT/Fire Police.

And the guy who taught me was very encouraging. He said that the DOC in CT is going to be losing 60% of their employees in the next 4 years! So if I don't make it as a cop and I am still stuck in CT I will still be able to secure a job in the law enforcement field.

And one last thing. I have FINALLY found the college I wish to attend to get my BS in Criminal Justice!!!! :clap:thumbsup:yes

Husson in Bangor Maine is a private college and my aunt is a proff. there! They have an AMAZING upper classman program for CJ students. In my Junior year (which is when I would start going) they give me the opportunity to work as a part-time police officer in Maine. In my senior year I can become a full-time cop and my time on the job counts towards my credits! I was so happy when I found out. And I'm pretty much a shoe-in as I am above in all their SAT scores and grades and they don't require a language which is great because I only have a single year of a language under my belt from HS. :thumbsup:thumbsup:thumbsup:thumbsup:thumbsup

Another update.

Got my security officer license today. :D So now I have a actual card I can hold. Very happy about that.

Got my EMT books today.

Oh and I got such high grades on my Criminal Law I tests that the teacher is exempting me from the final, meaning I get a nice three day weekend before I have to start my three day a week 8-5 EMT class. :thumbsup

Not part of my initial post, but I reconnected with a girl this week who I have not seen or talked to since fall of Junior year (two or three years ago now). At that time I had strong feelings for her and she had gone through a few not-so-nice relationships and was not interested in messing up another one. Well we went to the movies Friday and I found I still have feelings for her, have to see where that goes, she's a very nice and loving person.

Friday is my last EMT class. Doing the practical tests. Took my written exam today and got an 82. After I pass the class I have to take a state and national test to get certified.

I also just applied to Liberty University in VA. Shooting for the Fall 2012 semester. A little early but they are accepting applications this early so why not! Just sent in my SAT scores and my college transcript. Need to run by the HS tomorrow and have them send over my HS transcript.

And I'm working myself into being physically fit enough for Basic Training for the Army summer 2012.

Police offer, Soldier, EMT, Criminal Justice, and security guard? Wow you must have A LOT of money and time! I definitely don't have either of those.

I got my acceptance letter to Liberty University today. :thumbsup Wearing the shirt they sent with my acceptance package right now.

if you plan to enlist for that, the pt test has changed the recruiter will have that info for you.

and yes:D 20 yrs ago i joined.

I know the requirements for the current PT test they give at MEPS. I'm there with the sit-ups. Working on the push-ups and running. Running is taking a small break since I no longer have shoes fit for running in.

And I'm actually considering ROTC. The current thing keeping me from it is if I can do ROTC in 2 or 3 years instead of 4.

you would rather do mp officer? that is if the army sent you to that school once you are past officer basic/bullock mix.

i wish you look, its a lot harder to be an officer in some aspects then enlisted as well the nature of politics. we dont call it the dark side for no reason.

I talked to some police recruiters and the local chief and they all said that being an MP doesn't add to a candidate's hiring chances. So I'm game for anything. I'd like to go Infantry Officer.

I talked it over with my dad and my uncle and my cousins and I'm pretty happy with the duties of an Officer.

Plus I get to boss my friends around :)

pard,ok. while i have no personal stake here. take it from an nco. its alot more enjoyable to lead from the front with the troops then to be behind them giving them orders. sadly after the rank of captain that is what happens.

i train my men, live with them and if need be die with them. an officer doesnt do that. in the training in the garrison, the officer is behind the scenes. the men dont see the officers until its either war time or field time.

that is the way it is. and it works but well you will just have to serve and see what i mean. if you go 11a(infantry officer) be sure to:

get a masters(cant make it past major without it)
learn from the ornery, coffee drinking, smoking and crusty , combat patch wearing seargent first class when you are assigned a plattoon.

ncos on that level usually have at least ten yrs or more in service, and also have had to baby sit(hold hands) the new butter bar.

I don't exactly plain on making this a career choice. Not sure if a Masters will be needed although I do plan on jetting my J.D. one day. I figured I'd do that once I joined the Force and had a more routine schedule though.

What's an 11a do exactly? The description on the Army.gov website is really vague.

officers dont do specific things. they lead the men by giving orders, the ncos carry that out. officers in general plan, the ncos execute.

in short for the 11a branch:

he can be in charge of a plattoon of mortarmen, anti-tank, and regular infantry.

it would take days to explain all that these do as far tactics. how they move which would be directed by the officer and where. and what weapons they have and what to shoot.etc

Well I talked to the ROTC guy at Liberty and I talked to my parents and I prayed and I got the solution. This spring I will enlist in USAR. I will go through Basic and AIT (looking for a "fun" MOS at the moment). AIT will end sometime in the Fall (hopefully and most likely).

Thinking I'll take a nice medium to long training MOS so I'm not twiddling my thumbs around waiting once I get out.

I'll get a base down in Virginia near Lynchburg. Find an apartment near Liberty and wait out until the Spring semester starts and I will start attending. The ROTC guy said all I need to do in order to get into SMP is to sign up for an ROTC class. He said since I'll have gone through basic I won't have to worry about getting in my two years of Basic ROTC classes and I won't have to worry about going to Fort Knox over the summer for the catch-up class. I'll still go to Fort Knox over the Junior-Senior summer for the Officer Training class.

Once I graduate the president of Liberty will give me my diploma along with my discharge papers and my commission papers.

Did the math and this is the BEST way to go. I'll be USAR which means I'll get GI Bill and the kick back plus drill pay and SMP has a certain amount it gives me per year (something like 4000). I will end up with something like 17k per school year to pay for tuition and such and that means I'll only have to shell out 3000 per year instead of the full 21k :thumbsup.

Also discovered that my EMT cert. will apply in Virginia for the first year and then I have to take their test.

I've been enjoying myself here at the Liberty University campus for the last 24 hours or so and I've REALLY learned a lot and my eyes are indeed opened! Never before have I experienced such an awesome community! Seriously it is amazing that I am one of 12000 Christian students. And one thing I have truly been in awe about is the accountability these people have because they have one another to hold each other up! I don't know how long this feeling will last but at the current time I feel so inspired that I truly want to just put away my sinful nature and embrace Christ. I'd been really down and out about Jesus and such lately but I'm so uplifted right now it's awesome!!!

I cannot wait to start attending next Fall! I've got at least three years here I figure as an undergraduate and God willing I'll have another two or three as a graduate working at that JD I've always wanted.
