is the modern vegan diet part of a religious system?

the cathars did not eat any meat or animal products

Cathars
see a sermon by the twelfth-century canon Raoul Ardens, PL 155: 2011A: as he reports, they are "condemners of meat and marriage. They say that it is as shameful to take a wife as it is to marry one's mother or daughter. They also condemn the Old Testament. They receive certain parts of the New and reject other parts, rejected the virgin birth and miraculous conception by the Holy Spirit. And were dualists believed in two gods, one spiritual and good or material and evil, and secret knowledge (gnostic) similar beliefs as new age mixed in.

thoughts?

Cathars / Albigensians

1) manichean dualists: (two gods) light & darkness or one good one evil.

2) fobids all meat products. (vegan)

3) forbids marriage & sex.

4) rejected miraculous conception of Christ by the Spirit & virgin birth.

5) Rejected trinity and divinity of Christ.

Don't think so, Don. It may have had it's roots in some form of religious system, but the secularized version that exists today isn't overtly attached to any religious beliefs as far as I can tell.

The concept of secular religions I personally think is applicable to some deeply held dogmatic lifestyles that aren’t overly spiritual or religious…

A vegitarian diet is part of the hindu and buddhist religeon, but is not part of the Christian religeon.

That said a diet that is as meat heavy as many western cultures is not a healthy diet.
The Jews in biblical times would have eaten a diet where meat was a luxury, in Exodous they moaned about vegetables. The diet of the average Israeli would have been bread, vegetables, fruit, fish and a little meat.

Strangely most dietians recommend that we eat a similar diet.
