Looking for Job

219) Looking for Job

Job 31

Then let my arm fall from my shoulder,

And let my arm be broken at the elbow.

For I dreaded disaster from God,

And I could not stand before his dignity.

- If he is guilty of anything, he accepts the consequences!

- But he knows what he did!

- He follows only one way, God’s way and God’s justice!

- He is surrounded by it!

- It shines on him!

- You just have to listen to him and drink his words and catch them and their fluidity!

- Job is free because he is so close to God!

- Freedom of heart and freedom of mind!

220) Looking for Job

Job 31

If I put my confidence in gold

Or said to fine gold, ‘You are my security!’

If I found my joy in my great wealth

Because of the many possessions I acquired;

If I saw the sun shining

Or the moon moving in its splendor;

And my heart was secretly enticed,

And my mouth kissed my hand in worship of them;

Then that would be an error deserving punishment by the judges,

For I would have denied the true God above.

- Job was a rich man but his priority was his faith in God !

- We remember what Jesus said about rich people, that is it is really difficult for them to get into God’s kingdom because of their wealth !

- But Job is not in this case !

- He did not let wealth contaminate his heart and mind !

- On the contrary, he would use it to help people !

- And wealth didn’t prevent him from having a strong relationship with God !

- Look at rich people today and you will see and understand the difference !

- It is so evident, so clear !

221) Looking for Job

Job 31

Have I ever rejoiced over the destruction of my enemy

Or gloated because evil befell him?

I never allowed my mouth to sin

By asking for his life in an oath.

- Heart and mind!

- Yes, for Job, heart and mind are connected!

- Yes, for him, what you think is as important as what you say!

- Usually people say one thing and think another!

- But Job is one, heart and mind are one!

- That’s what God is looking for!

- That’s why the connection he has with Job is so strong!

- That’s why the devil tried to destroy it!

- And that’s why he couldn’t do it!

- Yes, Job’s heart and mind are not two but one!

- Yes, indestructible!

222) Looking for Job

Job 31

Have the men of my tent not said,

‘Who can find anyone who has not been satisfied with his food?’

No stranger had to spend the night outside;

I opened my doors to the traveler.

- Hospitality!

Have I ever tried to cover over my transgressions, like other men,

By hiding my error in the pocket of my garment?

Have I been in fear of the reaction of the multitude,

Or have I been terrified by the contempt of other families,

Making me silent and afraid to go outside?

- Justice!

- Everywhere we get written speeches written by other people!

- It’s like singers who sing songs written by others!

- Words!

- But is the speech true?

- Personally I have never been able to listen to a speech!

- Everywhere you get people who speak on TV, on the radio, they speak and speak to fill the gaps!

- It’s like inflation!

- And it rains words and more words!

- But what do we do with empty words!

- A society of empty words with no more meaning!

- Everything is diluted!

- Is that what’s left?

- I believe in real life!

- And the Bible is real life with some individuals having a deep connection to God whereas the majority doesn’t!

- Yes, I believe in that!

- But I don’t believe in the wind!

223) Looking for Job

Job 31

If only someone would listen to me!

I would sign my name to what I have said.

Let the Almighty answer me!

- Job knows who he is and what he did and what he did not do!

- He knows the type of relationship he has with God and nobody will take it from him!

- Never!

- It is indestructible!

- Because it is built on rock!

If only my accuser had written out the charges in a document!

I would carry it on my shoulder,

And I would bind it around my head like a crown.

I would give him an accounting for every step I took;

I would approach him confidently, like a prince.

- He would never let anyone accuse him before God without defending himself!

- His relationship with God is too strong and unbreakable!

- He can’t live without it!

224) Looking for Job

Job 31

If my own ground would cry out against me

And its furrows would weep together;

If I have eaten its fruitage without payment,

Or if I have caused its owners to despair;

Then let thorns sprout for me instead of wheat

And foul-smelling weeds instead of barley.”

The words of Job end here.

- Each word of Job goes in the same direction!

- His way goes to God!

- There is no other option for him!

- And he can’t turn on the left or on the right!

- He can only go straight away!

- Every action he does has only one purpose!

- Getting closer to God!

- Even when it is written “the words of Job end here” they keep resonating or echoing in the minds of the people who listen to him carefully!

- And they never stop!

225) Looking for Job

Job 42

Then Job says in reply to God:

“Now I know that you are able to do all things

And that nothing you have in mind to do is impossible for you.

You said, ‘Who is this who is obscuring my counsel without knowledge?’

Therefore I spoke, but without understanding

About things too wonderful for me, which I do not know.

- Remember Job lived before or around the time of Abraham !

- No books of the Bible, nothing !

- Just Job and God !

- And he was able to follow the way straight away !

- There was no one like him on earth !

- Then the first part of the Bible was written !

- And the Israelites were completely unable to follow it !

- Then the second part of the Bible was written !

- And what’s the result ?

- How many people read it daily ?

- Look at this dying old world !

- Human beings never understand anything !

- They are stubborn and selfish !

- Only a few individuals!

226) God and Job / Job and God

Job 1:

- Upright man of integrity!

- Fearing God and shunning what was bad!

- After a series of banquet days was complete, Job would send for them in order to sanctify them!

- Then he would get up early in the morning and offer up burnt sacrifices for each of them!

- For Job said: “Maybe my sons have sinned and have cursed God in their heart.”

- That is what Job would always do!

- And he had no Bible, nothing!

- How far we are!

- Light-years from Job!

- Like the distance between the Milky Way and Andromeda, 2.5 million light- years!

- Do we have excuses?

- I don’t think so!

- We are just stupid human beings destroying our earth because of greed and selfishness!

- And human beings keep doing children and they are not ashamed!

- And every day it’s getting worse!

- Violence and more killings!

- And they always find excuses!

- MONEY! MONEY!

- Waiting for God to clean that!

227) God and Job / Job and God

Job 1:

- God is clear about Job:

- There is no one like him on the earth!

- He is an upright man of integrity!

- Fearing God and shunning what is bad!

- And there comes the devil!

- Apparently quite a lazy one!

- He has nothing better to do than accusing a faithful servant of God!

- What a shame!

- Thus he shows himself, good to nothing!

- A parasite!

228) God and Job / Job and God

Job 1:

- God let the devil strike Job to show to everybody his faithfulness to God whatever may happen!

- Then the devil takes everything from Job even his children!

- What is Job’s reaction:

“Naked I came out of my mother’s womb,

And naked I will return.

God has given, and God has taken away. Let the name of God continue to be praised.”

In all of this, Job did not sin or accuse God of doing anything wrong.

- Now I repeat for those who still don’t get the point:

- The only reference of Job is God, nothing else!

- HE ONLY KNOWS GOD!

- He used to live before or at the time of Abraham!

- He didn’t have any book, any part of the Bible!

229) God and Job / Job and God

Job 2: And God says to Satan: “Have you taken note of my servant Job? There is no one like him on the earth. He is an upright man of integrity, fearing God and shunning what is bad. He is still holding firmly to his integrity, even though you try to incite me against him to destroy him for no reason.”

- When God speaks about Job he calls him « my servant » !

- Only two words but they mean a lot coming from God !

- It clearly tells us that God cares about Job !

- He is someone he appreciates !

- Someone who is special to him !

- But it’s more than that !

- It’s like fireworks !

- We have « there is no one like him on earth », « an upright man of integrity », « fearing God », « shunning what is bad », « holding firmly to his integrity » !

- He knows him very well !

- There is warmth !

- A perfect description with many details !

- How many people are described in such a way by God in the Bible ?

230) God and Job / Job and God

Job 2: But Satan answers God: “Skin for skin. A man will give everything that he has for his life. But, for a change, stretch out your hand and strike his bone and flesh, and he will surely curse you to your very face.”

- Satan knows men but he doesn’t know Job !

- He thinks every man is identical to another one !

- He thinks that every man can be bought !

- For him no man is really faithful !

- So each time someone stays faithful, it shows that the devil is a liar !

- Thus showing that the devil is a liar again and again is a privilege !

- « Skin for skin »!

- The devil’s attack is precise !

- He knows what to do !

- He knows the relationship between God and Job is special !

- But for him, it makes no difference !

231) God and Job / Job and God

Job 2: Then God says to Satan: “Look! He is in your hand! Only do not take his life!” So Satan goes out from the presence of God and strikes Job with painful boils from the sole of his foot to the crown of his head. And Job takes a piece of broken pottery to scrape himself, and he is sitting among the ashes.

- God is as precise as the devil!

- He puts a limit to his actions!

- “Look! He is in your hand! Only do not take his life!”

- And the devil doesn’t lose time!

- He strikes Job's body which becomes painful!

- And the devil knows the limit perfectly!

- And he goes as far as he can!

- For him it is a mere game!

- And human beings are pieces of the game!

232) God and Job / Job and God

Job 2: Finally his wife says to him: “Are you still holding firmly to your integrity? Curse God and die!” But he says to her: “You are talking like one of the senseless women. Should we accept only what is good from the true God and not accept also what is bad?” In all of this, Job does not sin with his lips.

- Job doesn’t know what is on!

- He only knows he has just lost everything he had!

- And his body is in pain!

- And now it’s his wife!

- The devil strikes him with any weapon available!

- But every time he shows that the devil is a liar!

- And every time he shows that God is right!

- Whatever happens, Job knows where he goes, good weather or bad one, it doesn’t matter!

- He knows whom he belongs to!

233) God and Job / Job and God

Job 2: Three companions of Job hear about all the calamities that have come upon him, and each comes from his own place—Elʹi·phaz the Teʹman·ite, Bilʹdad the Shuʹhite, and Zoʹphar the Naʹa·ma·thite. So they agree to meet together to go and sympathize with Job and comfort him. When they see him from a distance, they do not recognize him. They begin to weep loudly and to rip their garments apart, and they throw dust into the air and onto their heads. Then they sit on the ground with him for seven days and seven nights. No one says a word to him, for they see that his pain is very great.

- The devil has kept his most powerful weapon for the end!

- He uses three men Job knows!

- And at first, they are willing to help him!

- They weep loudly!

- They rip their garments apart!

- They throw dust into the air and onto their heads!

- And they sit with him for seven days and seven nights without saying anything!

- And after that they are going to fight against him constantly!

- He won’t have any time to rest!

Death and Dying in the Middle East

Sami A. Hanna

Death and dying are universal realities for all creations in every country and cultural area. What makes death and dying so interesting is that its treatment varies from one country to another and from one culture to another. For example, if we take Europe as a whole, its people meet death and behave differently from the people of the Middle East.

We know something about the people of the Middle East, but we are not well acquainted with certain important cultural patterns of that area. When we go as Americans or Europeans, we focus our attention on movements, tourist attractions, etc., but we seldom care to see or investigate how the Middle Eastern people respond to death and dying.

Since this area is predominantly Muslim, our attention is focused on the attitudes and beliefs of the people of this faith. Most examples presented are derived from the Holy Qur’an, the Hadith, and other Islamic texts. Other basic sources are Hughes’ Dictionary of Islam, the Encyclopedia of Islam, and my own personal experiences and observations. I have relied on these latter books through this presentation, but I have not sought to cite page numbers in every instance, except when quoting from passages in the Qur’an.

First, however, I would like to share with you my impressions, as a Middle Easterner, of my first experience with an American funeral, which took place in Salt Lake City. The father of one of my very close friends died. I wanted, of course, to express my condolences to him but learned that such condolences are expressed in a mortuary. I located the mortuary and went there. I found myself in a large building with several rooms, each of which was reserved for a deceased person. A man ushered me into one of the rooms. When I entered and approached the family, I was utterly shocked. The family was standing in line, friends were also standing in line, so I stood in line. When my turn came, I expressed my sympathy to my friend. However, what was even more shocking to me was the spirit in which the family received me. “Look how nice he is. Doesn’t he look wonderful?” These and other things were said in a joyful spirit. To be honest, I expected to see the family of the deceased crying and screaming as in the Middle Eastern culture. But that was not the case. After viewing the deceased in his half-open casket, I returned home wondering how death in America, at least in this Mormon setting, could be received with such joy and happiness. When I asked my friend about this attitude, I was told that death is a transition—a bridge to a happy and everlasting life in heaven.

Such a belief caused me to ponder and to ask myself why we receive death completely differently in the Middle East than in the West? Why do we cry and scream for at least a year? Why do men wear black ties and women black garments? Why do we abstain from everything sweet, from food, from even listening to the radio? Why do the neighbors turn off their radios as a token of sympathy? Why do we remain in mourning for at least forty days?

So God uses evil for His own ends. He can and does use suffering for His own purposes. Though there is NO evil in Him. Would I be right in saying that, "No one can understand the full extent of His sovereign plan...no one can comprehend the good and evil that He sends?"

- First, when you break one of your leg or one of your arms or when you get a disease like cancer, you need a cure and it's often painful!

- There are so many diseases which require a lot of time to cure!

- And sometimes you must fight the disease and you die!

- Think about depression which can last and last!

- Everywhere people suffer from diseases!

- In many places, people suffer the consequences of war!

- In many places, people suffer from poverty or famine!

- And because of man's action, it's getting worse and worse!

- Think about pandemics and how human governments react!

- When it's not one thing, it's another one!

- What happens when our parents die or go to prison?

- Man is responsible for his personal choices!

I think the Lord must have purposes that can only be understood from an eternal perspective.

Like suffering is temporary, but may have endless benefits.

- Second, in the case of Job, the devil was responsible by accusing Job and thus any human being of unfaithfulness or of being led by personal interests!

- There is a big difference between God's justice and human justice!

- In the case of human justice, you can forget it!

- You must not forget that we are not alone!

- There are angels!

- When the devil provokes God, the angels are watching and listening carefully!

- That's why God had to demonstrate that the devil was wrong and a liar!

Sometimes I think the devil is insane. He is God's devil, of that I'm sure!

The devil entered Judas, as a result, we were saved!

It doesn't take me long to get to the place where I say, "Okay God, it's too much for me, so I'll trust You instead, that You know what You're doing, and in the end, everything will be alright!"

- Third, if we take the case of Adam's unfaithfulness, God could have killed him all at once!

- That's what we call human justice!

- And he could have started everything again with a new couple!

- But in this case, the devil would have proved right!

- Man can live alone without God's leadership!

- Man's history keeps proving man is unable to guide himself and is a wolf for the other men and is a danger for himself!

- But then the angels could have said and done the same!

- But the majority of them stayed faithful!

- Humanity lost perfection because of Adam, Jesus had to die and offer his perfect life to serve as a ransom and give access to eternal life to faithful human beings!

- God's justice is different from human justice!

- For me the devil is a parasite!

- But he has his own logic!

- He likes power!

- He likes when people worship him!

- he behaves like human kings or political leaders when they have power!

- He is proud!

- He is jealous of God!

That His judgment is different is a good thing. I'm glad He's like He is.

I wouldn't want to be him.

- Yes, temporary just when you have to suffer an operation or a cure to get better!

- Here it is a question of putting an end to human suffering!

- Then no one will be able to discuss God's leadership!

- No one will be able to contaminate the earth!

- No more wolves!

- For me, the choice is clear!

- On the one hand, you have a parasite leading to destruction, on the other hand, the creator of the universe, the source of knowledge and wisdom leading to eternal life!

- But the choice is not clear for many!

- Yes, you are right, his judgment is completely different!

- We just have to look at his creation for that!

- Everywhere we find design and immensity: in the universe, when you look through a microscope, when you study the brain...

- Every time you open a door, you get more doors to open without any limits!

That's for sure. We are so blessed to know Him. And to think that we'll spend eternity with Him. That fact that I complain just shows my frailty. And He chooses to live in us! BTW Thanks for your teaching on Job and Daniel. They are very important books to me and you help me understand them better.

- Personally, I have never enough and I always want to know more!

- I always want to open more doors!

- My pleasure!

- I always want to study more and talk about God's word!

- There is so much to learn but time and effort are necessary!

- And it brings so much energy to go on and search more!

- And when people participate, you need to do more research and spend more time and more effort!

- But then you get even more energy!

- God is not responsible for man's or the devil's bad actions!

- But it will put an end to all of them!

- It's only a question of time!

- The problem for many is that God's time is not human time!

234) God and Job / Job and God

Job 3:

- Job can’t communicate with God anymore!

- And he is in big trouble!

- He has lost everything!

- So the first reflex is to die and rest!

- He doesn’t want to think anymore!

- His mind is dark!

- He has no hope!

- He feels lost without God’s presence!

235) God and Job / Job and God

Job 4:

- Anguish!

- Calamity!

- The terrors from God!

- He wants God to kill him!

- It would bring him comfort!

- For he has not denied the sayings of the Holy One!

- His brothers have left him!

- He says the three individuals would sell their own friends!

- He hasn’t done anything wrong!

- Everybody is against him!

- And there is no God!

- It’s unbearable for him!

236) God and Job / Job and God

Job 7:

- Man’s life is nothing!

- Job keeps being ill!

- He has no more life!

- No hope!

- His life is windy!

- No more happiness!

- He can only complain!

- About the anguish of his spirit!

- About his bitter distress!

- He makes nightmares!

- He has no more communication with God!

- He only thinks God is looking for his errors!

- Only DARKNESS!

- No light!
