Prove to me, (with evidence a bit stronger than already suspect theories) and that the 'hijackers' are alive and well, and I'll admit you're right.

A five-year-old story from our archive has been the subject of some recent editorial discussion here. The story, written in the immediate aftermath of the 9/11 attacks, was about confusion at the time surrounding the names and identities of some of the hijackers. This confusion was widely reported and was also acknowledged by the FBI.

The story has been cited ever since by some as evidence that the 9/11 attacks were part of a US government conspiracy.

We later reported on the list of hijackers, thereby superseding the earlier report. In the intervening years we have also reported in detail on the investigation into the attacks, the 9/11 commission and its report.

We’ve carried the full report, executive summary and main findings and, as part of the recent fifth anniversary coverage, a detailed guide to what’s known about what happened on the day. But conspiracy theories have persisted. The confusion over names and identities we reported back in 2001 may have arisen because these were common Arabic and Islamic names.

In an effort to make this clearer, we have made one small change to the original story. Under the FBI picture of Waleed al Shehri we have added the words "A man called Waleed Al Shehri..." to make it as clear as possible that there was confusion over the identity. The rest of the story remains as it was in the archive as a record of the situation at the time.

We recently asked the FBI for a statement, and this is, as things stand, the closest thing we have to a definitive view: The FBI is confident that it has positively identified the nineteen hijackers responsible for the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Also, the 9/11 investigation was thoroughly reviewed by the National Commission on Terrorist Attacks Upon the United States and the House and Senate Joint Inquiry. Neither of these reviews ever raised the issue of doubt about the identity of the nineteen hijackers.

Yeah, I'm funny that way. When someone is caught lying to me twice, I just can't seem to go to them for facts anymore.

Thanks Potluck, for clearing that up. Not that it's going to make much difference anyway, but nonetheless you've put your finger on the heart of what drives these conspiracies. News reports were so chaotic that day, and in the rush to get something, anything reported, a lot of faulty information was put into print and on the newscreeens. Then, as things got sorted out, the news media reported the claifications. However, the conspiracy nuts aren't interested in the clarifications, they want to go with the original murky reporting, because they can twist those reports around and act that they're facts. So, they dig through archives such as this, ignoring any later clarifications, and present it as fact.


Why? Hey, because there is money to be made in being a conspiracy writer. You get to write books, go on talk shows, have fame via the Internet.

Myself, I've got more important things to do tonight, like watch my Spurs finally tromp the Lakers. The Spurs will take this series, they will, they will, they will!

No, for the same reasons I won't watch any Michael Moore movies. I have read the link Potluck provided, have you?

You see, I too, have technical experience and many of these conspiracy theories defy what I consider common sense or at least common knowledge. I have been an auto and motorcycle mechanic, a machinist and tool & die maker and even have some welding experience. I also understand that one can't begin to calculate or dismiss the damage a large plane can do to a structure like the WTC towers.

I also do not like when someone distorts or manipulates facts and findings to state their care. That's dishonest. This man said no other buildings in the area were affected by the crashing towers, but I know this to be untrue. From the link Potluck posted:

I know this to be a fact and knew it within minutes of it happening. How? I work for a communions company. We monitor alarms. We have two voice T1s coming into our building; one originates from outside of Philly and the other, it originated from lower Manhattan. When the Verizon building was damaged, we lost one T1. Fortunately, the second T and cell service was uninterrupted.

I am still skeptical on the WTC#7 and the supposed Thermite from one of the towers.

If your not willing to look at any side but your own then there is no point in talking to you at all. I'm amazed that you are so willing to condemn what you know nothing about, you my friend are a perfect sheep you just believe what others tell you and never bother to look at anything from the other side. If you ever bother to look at some of the many many links I have given you I just might be willing to re-open this, but until then you go living your world where Bush is the perfect president and all is just as they tell you. You see I HAVE looked at this from both sides before I came to my conclusion, I once believed the lie, but I kept looking that is what makes us different.
