Love feast

whats a "love feast"?

Has to do with the sharing of meals among Christians as a symbol of love. You bring what you have prepared and share it with the others. At times, gifts are exchanged (as I have witnessed in a church I attended last year).

These men are blemishes at your love feasts, eating with you without the slightest qualm—shepherds who feed only themselves. (Jude 1:12 NIV1984)

Maybe somebody who knows can fill in the historical information we have about these.

I think the gathering Paul addresses in 1 Corinthians 11 is considered one of the early church's love feasts:

"20 When you come together, it is not the Lord’s Supper you eat, 21 for as you eat, each of you goes ahead without waiting for anybody else. One remains hungry, another gets drunk. 22 Don’t you have homes to eat and drink in?" (1 Cor. 11:20-22 NIV1984)

It's generally known as 'love feast', done about once a year in some churches I know.
Years ago at a church I attended we had them about once a month on Sunday nights.

I have dear memories of fellowshipping with those who attended the ministry where we shared, and grew, and enjoyed the life of the Spirit together as we sat under the Word learning all about the Lord and our lives in Him.

I remember one Sunday night at a love feast (we didn't actually call them that) I lead everybody in a set of songs while I played my guitar (I was a worship leader back then, lol). I pointed out to the people present that they could have easily been a couple of miles down the road at the big church where the Pipers* concert was going on at the same time as our dinner. Instead they had me, my Alvarez guitar, and a lousy sound system. I wouldn't have traded it for anything.

*I think I'm remembering the name of the group correctly. They were a big gospel singing group in the early nineties.

And now do you stilll lead or play or sing?

Classik, are we having a discussion on whether it's okay to have potluck dinners at the church? :thud:

I've don't recall ever even hearing the phrase "love feast". Are you asking if it's not biblical for families to bring a dish to a potluck dinner at the church? Every Lutheran I know would be out on their ear if that were the case!

Bringing Pepsi instead of Coke is clearly not biblical! :coke :thumbsup

Families do do that - they bring their dishes to church and dine with the members of the church.

One of my experiences was rather a horrifying one. I was on the stage, the band was very busy. So, I was playing the keyboard and some of the members of the church were busy admiring the style. A girl from the choir moved briskly towards me (and why me), a spoon full of rice projecting from her hand. I didn't notice her coming. When I did I saw a firecely-moving spoon flying towards my mouth. Unbelievable! This girl launched this missile into my mouth and about half of it scattered all over the surface of the keyboard.

It's quite cool when people share together. I don't like eating in a public place:sad
