No more TV

My husband and I made the decision to have our cable TV turned off at the beginning of February. We were paying too much for cable, and discovered that we spent way too tmuch time "vegetating" in front of the TV Of course, there are some shows I miss. I really enjoyed the gardening shows on HGTV. That's the channel I watched the most. But, since we stopped the TV, I find myself going to bed earlier and getting a lot more sleep. And, we have lots of DVD's and even left-over videos that we can watch if we want to.

But, I find that I'm spending a lot more time in Bible study and reading good books. And I really enjoy listening to music. We have a large collection of the Bill Gaither videos and I really enjoy putting them in while I do housework and stuff.

We have a debt that we're trying to get paid off, and I send the amount of the cable bill to that debt each month. It will help us pay it off much sooner.

God Bless.

I can hear you on that, it is expensive. We're going to drop the DVR—that will save $15. I just want to be able to watch all the Phillies games! I guess I could listen to the radio.

Well, I can't identify with that, not being a sports fan. The one thing my hubby really missed was the Super Bowl. But, later, he said it didn't really matter to him that much. I think it's a question of what you've become used to.

God bless.

I've had to limit my daughter's TV drastically. I noticed a definite pattern between her watching these smart-aleky teenage sitcom shows and her smart-aleky attitude. Since restricting when and what she is allowed to watch, her attitude seems to improved quite a bit.

Personally, I could live without TV altogether.

Now this is I have to agree with. :yes I was getting to the point of wanting to have my daughter shipped off, her smart-aleck attitude was driving us all nuts. The first week we were w/o TV, she was biting everyone's head off.

But, after a week of "withdrawal", I am seeing a marked improvement. She actually will look me in the eyes when I'm talking with her, she's sneering and smarting off less. So, yeah, I definitely agree that there is a correlation between teen shows and teen attitude.

It's not just teens. Very young children who watch a lot of network TV are subjected to all the worldly "alternative" lifestyles, like homosexuality, loose sex, and all kinds of things. By the time they reach teenage years, they can be completely de-sensitized to worldly things. And, one thing that has really bothered me about some of the sit-coms - like Raymond, and some others. The father is always made out to be some kind of moron, who can't do anything right, and has to depend on Mom to always get him out of trouble, usually by trickery or lying. What an example for young kids. Not to mention all the sexual inuendos involved.

I wish we could have TV shows like we used to, but nowadays programs like Andy Griffith, Daddy Knows Best, Leave It To Beaver, etc. would be way too tame for today's audiences.

God Bless.

I still watch Andy Griffith. It's timeless—the stories transcend time and culture, they are simple truths about our humanity.

Years ago, I taped Any Griffith episodes from TV, cutting out the commercials. Each tape has about 6 hours of episodes, and I have three tapes. We watch them over and over again. I wish I could have them put on DVD. My favorite episode is always the one about Aunt Bea's homemade pickles. No matter how many times I see it, I just laugh my head off.

God Bless.
