I'm a double major. Philosophy and Theology.
I actually started out as a Biology/pre-med major, but switched my Freshman year (just before classes started) after a lot of thought. The previous year the transitional deacon (now a priest) at my parish recommended that I read John Paul II's encyclical "Fides et Ratio" ("Faith and Reason") after I expressed concern over an accusation from my senior English professor that "religion is for weak minded people". After I read it, we continued to discuss philosophy and theology (for that was really my first experience with it) even after he was ordained and had been sent to another parish. Eventually, instead of focusing on medicine, I was buying philosophy and theology books and spending all my time reading and being surprised by faith... and the relationship between faith and reason (when understood properly), and thus, much to the disappointment of most of my family, I changed my major.
Thus, instead of a doctor, I want to be a DRE (director of religious education) and teach others about the faith. Philosophy will be a great assistance, and I also hope to better develop my own philosophical opinions as regards my faith, etc... maybe I'll be the next Edith Stein. ;-)
