Poll: Respecting her tattoo wish

Should Christians respect a woman's wish for a tattoo?

Is this also an argument against Gospel tract distribution, on the supposed grounds that only a very small proportion of them might ever bear fruit? We are called upon to sow the seed, however. Blessings.
Gospel tracts don't have the potential of emboldening a weak person to go back to the ways of the world they were once engrossed in.

farouk,

I've heard you often say that you have never told anybody to get a tat (or at least, not here on CF.net). Why is that exactly? I'd like to hear the reasons that lay behind your oft' mentioned restraint.

There have been some posts where people have seemed to claim that I have been actively doing so. I see myself rather as pointing out that many Christians do have them, and that they often find them to be very effective conversation-starters. I don't think I've said to people directly that they 'ought to' get them, though. It's an individual thing.

Blessings.

I love pretty and tactful tattoos. I don't like tattoos everywhere. Just doesn't look good to me, that's my opinion. I think it isn't healthy for your body but I've considered getting one. Perhaps my favorite scripture or something small.

To me, it is no different than women getting their ears pierced.

Good to be sure about the verse in the tattoo before going ahead with it, anyway. Blessings.

For the Christians reading these forums that are thinking of getting a tattoo, please take the time to read the below response I (tandemcpl) made in another thread. As posted earlier in this thread I have several large tattoos, all of which I acquired before giving my life to Jesus at the age of 52.

I disagree that tattoos can be a good witness tool. All of mine have been nothing but a hindrance to me. Following is why I feel this way.

Imagine if you will that each one of us is a large window made up of many smaller panes of glass. On one side of the window are Jesus and His glorious light and on the other side the darkness of the world. I would like to believe that all my panes are crystal clear and the light of God shining through is blindingly strong; however, unfortunately that is not the case. At times I struggle in my walk, and that clouds some of the smaller pieces of glass and blocks some of God’s light. However, I know that as God sanctifies me my window will grow clearer.

There are, however, several small panes that will never be completely clear, and those are the panes that have been painted over with tattoos. Tattoos are of the world and will always be seen that way. Non-believers that see my tattoos automatically think I am one of them and act accordingly around me. The same thing happens with fellow Christians. They see my tattoos and think I am of the world. With both groups I have to scrape away at the paint to let God’s light shine through to reveal the new creation I have become. This is an ongoing process because once I encounter new individuals; I have to start scraping all over again.

In my opinion, any tattoo, no matter the reason, will permanently paint over part of one’s window blocking God’s light, and to effectively witness to others we need as much of God’s light shining as possible.

If you don’t feel you have the ability to witness to others, please don’t use worldly practices to help you. Don’t paint over your glass, instead, fall on your knees and pray to God for the strength and courage to approach others boldly in His Name.

Be blessed.

Tattoo removal is costly and doesn't work. Thats why I got one of mine covered.

Angel: I think actually that the artwork involved in doing a cover up for another design superimposed, involves as much if not more skill than the original design may have.

Artists don't like covering up their own work but it's good to keep on good terms with a tattoo artist that one really trusts.

All the more reason to not get one in the first place.
not to mention Painful. they burn it out. they have to use a green laser for green ink. a black one for a black ink. it takes a long time for that to be done and the skin must heal. not to mention that when you get tats you cant donate blood for 6 months.

PS: Whether removals or the original tattoos, it's worthwhile getting to know estimates from local parlors. On the one hand, cheap isn't worhwhile in the long run, on the other, cost effectiveness is important, too.

(Looking at pricing from the point of view of the tattooee and the tattooist are different, of course, aren't they?)

Blessings.

PS: But two or three quality tattoo parlors in a district can really raise the standard, I think, for an area.

Would a person a "Christian person" lets say reba, no i don't want to get reba involved, would a "Christian person" advise another person to do themselves bodily harm? a documented case of a 22 year old grocery store employee that needed a liver transplant 4 weeks after getting his $45 tattoo? Open for comments guys.. :chair

I really like "Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen" Heb 11:1, and I've considered just getting the words "faith hope love". Most likely on my back, out of sight, out of mind & easy to hide haha! My 3 sisters were my bridesmaids, all have tattoos, I didn't even give the idea a thought that their tattoos should be covered. ..

Yes, well, these days for those that want it, gettting tattooed is somethat many women just do naturally, in a matter of fact way, including many Christian women (apparently statistics show that in North America 59%-70% of parlor clients are women) and like you said even for formal bridal party attire many wouldn't even see the need to cover modestly placed desings.

(This isn't an argument in favor, or against; it kind of expresses it how it is, though, for so many wearers.)

Blessings.

Something to think about:

For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths. 2 Tim. 4:3-4, ESV

Be blessed.

This is a battle I know all too well. I have a quarter sleeve tattoos on both my upper arms and a quarter sleeve tattoo on my right forearm, along with a half calf tattoo on my right leg. Even when I was a heathen I knew enough to make sure all the tattoos I got could be covered up while at a job interview. Even in the world tattoos are looked at in a negative way by many.

Now I have to make sure they are covered up when I meet new individuals who are Christian to make the uphill battle a little easier. If they get to know me before they see my tattoos it makes it much easier.

I also struggle with whether or not to let them show while in church. That is why I’m not shy about proclaiming that I think Christians should not get tattoos. They are a part of the old self and a part of the world that we are told, by God, to forsake. Furthermore, I would be greatly saddened if one of the young adults in the church I attend came up to me and showed me a tattoo that I inspired.

Be blessed.

Hi Sir. I can appreciate that you have a sensitive conscience that is leading you in a particular direction. This may indeed be best for you in the light of your experience.

I do know a guy whose faith based designs open up so many opportunties to talk to the people who ask him about them. For this reason, he wants more Scriptures inked; I guess for him, his conscience is leading him in that particular direction.

Your comments are appreciated. Blessings.

.. in an odd way, the ones I have could be considered as "faith" related tattoo's... in my mind anyway

Hi StoveBolts: you said this a while back.

I guess they might be kind of part of your faith journey that you testify about, right?

Blessings.

Yea tattoo?,...... NO!. not no but heck no.,.......
Lev 19:26 "You are not to eat anything containing blood, engage in occult practices, or practice fortune telling.
Lev 19:27 "You are not to cut your hair in ritualistic patterns on your heads or deface the edges of your beard.
Lev 19:28 "You are not to make incisions in your flesh on account of the dead nor submit to cuts or tattoos. I am the LORD.
Lev 19:29 "You are not to defile your daughter by engaging her in prostitution so the land won't become filled with wickedness.
Lev 19:30 "Observe my Sabbath and stand in awe of my sanctuary. I am the LORD.

However,...... If you have one what can I do about it ?,.... Or just how exactly is it going to hurt me in any way?,.......My wife has does have one. I will never forget she got it before we started dating. And even though it really disapointed me that she would make that choice, I married her anyway. And I dont love her any less.

And if you read the scripture in context it would seem that the tattoos spoken of here are refrences to some type of ritual involving the dead. Now I'm sure that people dont normally get a tattoo to worship the dead, but some times pagan practices slip there way into our society and we think we can turn them into somethig good when the devil is bhind the scenes laughing at us the whole time.
If you do it in ignorance you have room to repent if you know its wrong and you do it anyway it is between them and God. like ive heard it written here. Just because someone has a tattoo doesnt make me like them any less. I am responsible for my action you are responsible for yours and I have absolutly no power over that. So if she want one and you are equally yoked your wishes should overide her decision. if you are not married then what can you do.
