  • Focus on the Family

    Strengthening families through biblical principles.

Focus on the Family addresses the use of biblical principles in parenting and marriage to strengthen the family.

I read this as a strong suggestion that you support plural marriage..
So because the creep Jeffers said God told him to marry those kids he should be counseled to do so.. ?

This is a very interesting thread..
No.... it should not be read that way.

I have to be above reproach. My household also with a good reputation.

Now polygamy in America is not having a great reputation nor will my family. People like Warren Jeffers or Mormonism founder Joseph Smith. (He started with the maid?) Both went on to the children and marrying them.

That's child molestation and causing a little one to stumble.

That's the exact opposite of what I was promoting

Good :)

edited to add the scripture ... this is the A&T

1Ti_3:2 A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach;
1Ti_3:12 Let the deacons be the husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well.
Tit_1:6 If any be blameless, the husband of one wife, having faithful children not accused of riot or unruly.
now your post makes sense :)

I stand corrected

Revelation 19:9 KJV
And he saith unto me, Write, Blessed are they which are called unto the marriage supper of the Lamb. And he saith unto me, These are the true sayings of God.

True sayings:
The most solid object always casts the shadow. The shadow may have a hint of what the reality is, but time is best spent in study of the ultimate realities.

Colossians 2:16 KJV
Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days:
17 Which are a shadow of things to come; but the body is of Christ.

Ephesians 5:31
For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh.
32 This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church.

The human ordinance of marriage should not be degraded, but it does seem to be a shadow/ type and the relationship we have with Christ Jesus is the over riding reality..

Studying mairriage yields some understanding of Christ and the church, but studying Christ and the church gives the ability to look at human marriage in its proper perspective.

Matthew 19:10
His disciples say unto him, If the case of the man be so with his wife, it is not good to marry.
11 But he said unto them, All men cannot receive this saying, save they to whom it is given.

For some this conversation just zooms by with no results. I pray understanding may be given to more of us.

What happened to my backwoods Mississippi talk? Reckon I have been hanging around the folks that are high falutin.

Great link.

The house keeper was interesting...so was the polyandry.

Swinging is obviously a sin.
And the Bible says specifically polyandry is sinful as well.

But the many wives...
Whole nother story.

Even Abraham had several wives after Sarah's passing. And let's not forget the two wives and their handmaids of Jacob. Moses' second wife got him in trouble as she was a Cushite...it wasn't that it was his second wife but that she was from Cush...

Why then is it so frowned upon today?
(Not that I want another one... I got all I need, want, wish for.....)

But obviously there is a segment of our population that seems intent upon wishing for this.
Among many of the financial elite a known girlfriend is something of a norm.
Formerly called consorts. Paul referred to them as wives which left the Roman/Greek believers feeling insulted...mostly because of their "paid influence" in the churches...(money always seems to buy influence)

Im not a fan of polygamy. But I suspect its primarily a cultural issue and may also have much to do with infant mortality rates. I also think only the more well to do could afford to have many wives. Many wives equated to many children which served to preserve ones name, children kept the family business going as it grew, defended against mauraders. Some Bedouins still live like that, in some instances its necessary for a clans survival

We find it offensive because thats what were taught and with advances in technology and medicine today it isnt much of a necessity.
