Read your Bible

Sadly, the majority of Christians don't. A pastor I knew did a talk on this one time showing that the vast majority of people who say they are Christians and attend church regularly actually spend more time brushing their teeth than they do reading their Bible. And how ironic is it that almost all of them carry a nice looking Bible with them to church every Sunday morning as if it was something they just couldn't be without. Yet the reality is that it's nothing more than a status symbol to them, maybe not even opened at church or maybe only opened for a few seconds when someone refers to a certain passage, and most certainly never looked at again until the next Sunday when they take it out to carry it under their arm for all to see. This is the sad state of the majority of most regular church goers.

Even just reading a little bit will put you head and shoulders above the majority of Christians.

It doesn't matter if they are saved or un-saved, with or without a bible when they go to church. Just being around other Christians at church, chains are broken to set you free. Acts 16:11-40 NKJV

I read my bible whilst brushing my teeth. Well I say bible, I have a bible app on my phone which has verse of the day. I also subscribe to a couple of websites that deliver a word for the day.

Hear hear, me too Brother. Verse of the day (I always do the whole chapter), read the NT in a year, and the daily devotional.

I set it to read to me and I follow along reading it. It helps retention that way.

First thing in the morning. I'm fresh, the house is quiet, and a good thing to do over coffee. :)
 
Just by going to Church and tucking that Bible in your arms makes you no more of a Christian than parking your car in a garage makes you a garage.

Interesting I didn't realise you could set it to read to you.

I'm not fresh first thing in morning that's why I need a shower:lol and my house is definitely not quiet with 4 kids, 2 dogs and a couple of budgies chirping away in my daughters room. Mind you I must say listening to those budgies chirping away is delightful. For some reason when I see birds flying around in the sky I find myself praising God.

If anyone wants to buy me a birthday present, 2 turtle doves will do nicely.

I digress. I don't always do the whole chapter but I often open up the bible study notes for the verse.
 
I read that 19% or so of self-described Born Again Christians have a Biblical worldview. That's slightly less than 1 in 5, which is kind of a depressing number (to me). I'm not currently a church goer (some bad experiences...I got burned...), but I have been working on building that Christian worldview. Reading The Bible is a big part of that, but I think prayer is huge, too. When I couldn't focus enough to read The Bible a lot (too much involuntary shock), I could at least pray. A lot. I can read The Bible now (Praise God!), and prayer remains the core of my Christian life.

You don't go to a building but you are in a church, this church of christianforums.net. I have to say that I'm so glad you are part of this church and I pray we never burn you. To me you are an inspiration to us all.

Thanks. I think this forum is better for a lot of people than many "real" churches. Churches, of course, grow out of communities and are filled with people, who have their own flaws and sins+sin patterns, beliefs, problems, etc. For someone who is quite stigmatized in my community, cfnet offers a way to get fellowship and such w/o...well, without dealing with being a stigmatized human being dealing with other human beings in a local church, lol.

If they would actually open the book and read it then they should have a hunger to always want more if they are truly born again by the word of God and the Holy Spirit. If you ask those who just carry their Bibles to Church what the sermon was about they will tell you they can't remember, but it sure made them feel good for awhile.

I have to say it does make me sad though. The format we have here is easier for some to be a part off because it's a virtual reality (which to be honest I find easier) because we do not have to meet people in the flesh with a fear of being talked down to etc.

What makes me really sad is that we can stigmatise face to face in a church building. Jesus never ever stigmatised those who sought him, in fact he sought out those who were stigmatised by people. The religious people who thought they were better.

Jesus sought out the stigmatised not with words that made them feel they were stigmatised but with a love that they knew they were not, that he loved them and would hang out with them.

We as people of God need to do the same.

What's wrong with that?
Most sermons are boring to me as well.
How often do we get a "Holy Spirit inspired sermon"?
