Reading the bible in/within a year

How many of us have done this...or have done it in less than a year? And can you share your experience?

I couldn't finish it the first time I attempted it. I started from Genesis and stoppped at Job (or therabout). It wasn't easy. I was striving to do what others have done...And not that I really understood all I read.
That was several years ago.

In 2010, I began the journey once more...and I was able to finish it - but beyond a year:sad
I read four chapters a day: two chapters in the morning and two at night. I concluded the reading on August 16th 2011

It wasn't completely boring - and I did enjoy reading the whole bible from the 'In the beginning...' of the few first words of the book of Genesis of the Old Testament of the bible to the 'Amen!', the last word of the book of Revelation of the New Testament of the bible. I was able to discover some biblical verses I have always known...most of which I couldn't find easily. There were yet several quotations, interesting quotations, I had not known before. Great discoveries.

Although it was a struggle, I really enjoyed reading the entire bible. I could start all over again.

I'm actually thinking about doing the one year bible now. My thing is, I've been a little bit all over... reading some books skipping others. This would be a great opportunity for me to attempt it from Genesis to Revelations in a year. I actually have the Bible on audio too, so hopefully that will help encourage me as well.

I am a great loser - I could not do that in a year or within a year:sad

Some do it in a year, others do it twice.

But one of our pastors challenged us. Despite his age (he is well beyond 60), he was able to do it seven times - within six months (though audio). :shocked:clap:confused

shame unto me :bigcry

if i have the patience i would like to spend in the books of the bible on year at a time.

i know a man who took that long with exodus when he taught in sunday school and he used jewish commentaries to teach that and he said he still didnt know it all!

one year in exodus.

one year in exodus.
It is incredible, as incredible as doing it 7 times within 6 months.

I gues the guy read one word in a day:lol

It all depends on one's willingness to do it. Afterall I heard about a muslim who sings the entire Koran. Perhaps he is an alien:dunno
...though I do not know which has more words, The koran or the Bible

I have read the entire bible in a year (or less) several times.

I would recommend to anybody getting a good commentary to read along with you especially to explain OT history and customs. I learned a lot reading along with a commentary and it will bring the verses to life especially in difficult books like Leviticus or some of the prophetical texts.

Most of us are indeed lazy. How about some people who read very voluminous novels? Some read about 5 romantic novels in a week. And all these books have over 500 pages.

I first read Thomas Wolfe (You can't go home again) when I was a kid. I finished it in about 6 months. I have read it severally resently.

He shouldn't have died:sad

no , i can say that he didnt. the rambam commentaries are that deep

on exodus allone his commentary is 600 page approx.

rambam comments on the book it self and also adds the oral tradition (called the midrash for the commentaries and the talmud) the menora (not the one in my avatar) has a lot said on it.

one book that has more said on it then my thick bible. i have taken my grandmas tanach to church and people couldnt believe that it was only the ot.

I should have done it this way.

It's a new year, give it another try! I have used the Quest Study bible, MacArthur Study bible, Nelson KJV Study bible, Life Application Study bible, and am currently working through the ESV study bible. Any of these are good references and I recommend them.

You can also use some of the classic commentaries by Matthew Henry, Adam Clarke, John Gill, and CI Scofield that are free on-line. I personally like Gills and Scofield the best.

If you make it a habit to read 3 Chapters a day you can make it by December! I hope it works out for you. God bless.

It is particularly for scholars, I think, and It is better studied as a university degree.

Believe me, it's a suicidal attempt trying to finish just that alone...EXODUS - not the entire bible. Perhaps the entire bible would need a special engine for storage: A billionGB

My dad has a Matthew H's Commentry, and I almost don't go near it. It is too big...though very good.

ESword has Matt Henry, for free, which can 'show up' along with the verses your reading. I have Dad's old written books they take up the whole of the bottom book shelf. :eeeekkk

All that he did and no computer

Yes: but it requires thorough meditation. At times the Spirit says, 'Go through this chapter once more'

In that case you must obey. There were times when I finished an entire chapter but could not comprehend what I read. I was just reading for reading's sake. I was desperate to finish the whole bible.

It's not that voluminous. One of the daughters of one of our ministers did it within a day. It is frustrating to me:sad

Some people are naturally good. Her speed is awesome. Her typing speed (computer) is incredible.
