Rock

Whoever doesnt love jazz here should be banned from the site, CF.net. I will see to that. How can someone not love jazz?

jazz is organised nonsense, some say: yet it is superb: millions of jazz chords to play. Hehe!

All at once....on different instruments.....played badly....:D But each to their own

No wait.... that would be punk rock. :lol

The Sex Pistols could only play 4 or 5 chords.
Lemmy from Motorhead gave what I think is one of the best hard rock (don't ever tell Lemmy he plays metal) quotes years ago.
"All up I think we only know 4 chords, we're just really good at arranging them"

Hehe I know more than 4 chords, so I'm already good enough to join a punk rock band. Awesome!! :)

I'm thinking about finding 3 or 4 worship songs with easy chords and then try to get my home group to let me lead the worship in one of our next sessions. We don't have aguitar player in our group, so if we sing worship songs then we either do it with a worship CD "leading" us, or without any backing instruments. Last time we did that (singing a capella) we dropped about 1 octave from the beginning to the end of the song, and were totally off key, it was horrible. I know God accepts even the most unmusical worship if only it comes from our hearts, but my ears aren't as tolerant as God.
Me playing guitar can't be nearly as horrible as that group of people singing a capella.

Contemporary worship music has a great potential for being awful anyway.
I won't embed it because it's terrible, but here's the link just in case anybody wants to know what sort of worship I dislike:
(Grrr, I didn't want to embed it but it automatically does. How can I disable that?)
The song itself is great (although it's one of those modern songs that contain way too many I, me and my's), but it should be down twice the speed with distorted guitars and heavier drums and a lot more gritty and confident vocals... I mean, are they praising the almighty and eternal God that greated the universe through His mere word, and His son who died for us - or are they singing a tune for a fabric softener commercial????
Sorry for that rant. It just angers me that music we sing to please God may have powerful lyrics, but is often performed in the lamest possible way although it should be the most powerful way possible.

Paul1965 You are a rock fan, do you play any instruments? I'd be surprised if you didn't.

I would agree with you that some jazz is so disjointed that it is just noise to my ears. However, not ALL jazz is like that. Some jazz is played by one solitary musician with amazing skill.

This is what I hear. Lovely lyrics, soft and beautiful worship, vocal harmonies are very well done, vocals presenting lyrics are the focus of the song rather than instrumentals. To me that is all good for one type of praise and worship.
Except to me the vocals are very monotone. I don't feel the power in the vocals compared to what the lyrics are saying at certain places in the song. It's all a gently flowing river with no powerful rapids as the lyrics suggest.

The lyrics are good, it's a powerful song, and the recording I posted above is technically perfectly done. It does, however lack spirit. You're right, it's monotone, and way too soft considering what they are singing about. They are trying to make it sound emotional, but it just sounds tame and lame. There's no soul in it. It's like the singer doesn't care what he's singing about.
Lots of contemporary worship songs are like that. Technically those musicians are alright, but it seems they are afraid of giving those songs some spirit and power because of how wussy our modern christianity is. Or maybe they think that when the musicians show off their real skill that they would take the attention to themselves and take the credit away from God. Anyway, cotemporary worship à la Hillsong is a sort of music I dislike.
Delirious have made a number of good songs and recordings that did not only glorify God, but also shows the personality of the musicians and get the sense of awe for God's work across.

I don't normally listen to opera, but when I see stuff like this, it just blows me away.

Nessun Dorma is one of my very favorite songs! My all time favorite is Pie Jesu though.
My favorite Opera singer is Sarah Brightman

Haha, name the band!
Yes I play 4 instruments very well. Air guitar (lead and rhythm sections) the CD player, tape player and MP 3 player very well. ( as these are machines which produce recorded sound they are an instrument of pleasure to me and therefore musical-instruments) :D

My favorite Opera singer is Sarah Brightman

I used to like her when I was younger and she was a dancer on the Kenny Everett Video show, google it if you don't know it but be warned...slightly risque..a lot of subtle innuendos and some not so subtle ones.
The dance troupe was called Hot Gossip. They later recorded a song "i was in love with a starship trooper" or some equally lame name. Sarah Brightman did the main vocal work, while she and the rest gyrated on stage.

Have you listened to her "Symphony" CD.I heard its quite Gothic. Wondering if it's Gothic with hard rock leanings like Evanescence (Amy Lee...awesome,powerful voice and the closest to opera I get) or Gothic as in pipe organs and stuff?

I like rock, but then I like all music. My favorite group of all time is The Band. When working at the computer I generally listen to Americana artists, like Mumford & Sons, Lucinda Williams, and Elana James. When driving long distances, I switch between that, gospel (the Isaacs, especially), and country, and modern rock, and oldies...even opera sometimes (my father-in-law loved opera, so I heard a lot of it,)

The truth is, there's a lot of junk in all the different genres of music, but, also a lot of great music that will be around for years. I like it all.

I heard The Band live in 1973, where there were about 600,000 of us at Watkins Glen.

Mortification: 20 years of Christian death metal (Aussies too) Here's one of their best. If anyone says.."no that's the devils work' i'd suggest going to the bands page and reading the lyrics of their songs.

I have pretty much all of Brightman's Albums. And actually, Symphony is my favorite- the live version in Vienna.
There are some crazy drum beats, but not electric guitar or anything.

Thanks Angel, was just checking, ..no gituar, probably pass on it..:)

From an entertainment stand point; I'm a huge fan of rock and metal, both Christian and some secular depending on the lyrics (I try to avoid bands that blatantly desecrate Christ like Deicide and Venom).

From a moral stand point; I don't believe in Christian or secular "music" as much as I believe in Christian or secular LYRICS. As for the secular lyrics, I don't see anything wrong with writing songs that have to do with war, politics or personal struggles.

Some of my top favorite bands include but or not limited to;
CHRISTIAN: Living Sacrifice, Mortification, Whitecross, White Heart, Petra, Impending Doom, Becoming The Archetype, Believer, The Crucified, One Bad Pig, Vengeance Rising, and Stryper.
SECULAR: Metallica, Rush, Dream Theater, Pink Floyd, Opeth, Sepultura, Led Zeppelin, Megadeth, Iron Maiden, Skid Row and Ratt

I could go on forever with bands I enjoy.

Jahjahwarrior, spot on! it's the lyrics that matter. If the glorify Christ and decry satan there can be nothing wrong in them. If the reverse is true, glorifying satan and decrying Christ, remove from the play list immediately.
On the subject of Iron Maiden, I had a rather heated debate here a long time ago about them and in particular, The Number of the Beast. I went so far as to copy paste the lyrics to show it was an ANTI-satan song, but do you think some people will listen? NooooOO. Instead they try to use scripture (and failed) to justify their dislike oof a certain type of music. Instead of doing that and twisting scripture and song lyrics, why can't people just be honest in themselves and to others and say: "ugghh "insert music genre"..I hate it".
The fact you included Sepultura on your listening list, tells me you have excellent musical taste ;)

I can't even recall how many times I've had to defend my views on rock music against Christians who oppose it. I've even heard arguments against Christian rock like "it's looks and sounds like the world" or "it brings out the appearance of evil", etc. I even once was in a short lived relationship with a girl (before I met my wife) in which her and her parents were very legalistic and got on my case about listening to rock music (which would eventually be the cause of the relationship ending). One thing I've learned throughout the past several years is that you will never be able to change the minds of those twist scripture around to justify their views against Christian rock even if you provide valid points and scripture to back up your side of the debate, just like they will never get us to turn against Christian rock. So now I no longer care what other Christians may think. Unless the holy spirit leads me otherwise, I will always support and defend Christian rock and metal music. And if any want to oppose that, well I guess it goes without saying that sometimes when we take a stand for Christ, we will be persecuted just like Christ himself went through for us. No servant is greater than his master.
