As I think about it, I didn't care much for history either. Too much memorization and that was of no interest to me.
I took AP history in high school, and found it interesting. I passed the test and got college credit for it. By contrast, memorizing state capitals in grade school was boring and unpleasant beyond all reason. I learn best by understanding how things work. Memorizing long lists is just meaningless noise that doesn't help me to understand. I tend to forget the memorized lists soon thereafter, but remember understanding for the long run.
Maybe partly I blot the memorized lists out of my mind, because they make me recall how unpleasant it was to memorize them. I remember understanding because it has pleasant memories. Understanding is fun.
