SECULAR SAYINGS THAT HAVE BIBLICAL ROOTS

Straight and narrow.... Mathew 7:14: Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it. :p

The KJV is so nicely metered, btw. This verse really shows that off. Some passages can be sung naturally, without modification. Example: have you ever heard the folk hymn: "Silver and Gold Have I None? If you know the song, you have memorized Acts 3:6!

Well, :p to you, Jason...

Here I went scurrying like a bunny trying to find out how "Jack of all trades, master of none" could be inspired by the Bible and I come back to find that what you really want is the Biblical roots to serving only one Master. :grumpy

What I came up with for "Jack of all trades, master of none" was 1 Corinthians 9:19-23

19 For though I am free from all men, I have made myself a slave to all, so that I may win more. 20 To the Jews I became as a Jew, so that I might win Jews; to those who are under the Law, as under the Law though not being myself under the Law, so that I might win those who are under the Law; 21 to those who are without law, as without law, though not being without the law of God but under the law of Christ, so that I might win those who are without law. 22 To the weak I became weak, that I might win the weak; I have become all things to all men, so that I may by all means save some. 23 I do all things for the sake of the gospel, so that I may become a fellow partaker of it.

Which sort of fits, because Paul is saying that he would do whatever is needful to win over souls to the Lord, but he's not the master of anyone, but rather a slave to the Gospel...

Does this count for anything?

Serving only one Master comes from Matthew 6:24...which I hate to tell you this, buddy...has nothing to do with the phrase "Jack of all trades, Master of none"!
 
one cant serve two masters for else will serve one master and hate the other. if one does mma or martial arts you will understand this. sorry its my wierdness

I don't think "what goes around comes around" is really an expression derived from the bible. It's more of a description of karma... But the closest verses I can find to the concept are:

Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. (Gal 6:7)

and

Even as I have seen, they that plow iniquity, and sow wickedness, reap the same. (Job 4:8)

Just for the record, note that neither of these verses are about "karma". God metes out the justice in both cases. In the Galatians verse this is made clear by the "God is not mocked". In the Job verse we don't see it 'till the next verse:

By the blast of God they perish, and by the breath of his nostrils are they consumed. (Job 4:9)

Interesting to note that “wit†is an old word for knowledge and/or intelligence. It only survives today as “wittyâ€; clever in conversation.

Wit (noun)
Wot, witting, wist (various verbs)

We see “wist†in the bible too. Wist is past tense:

And she said, The Philistines be upon thee, Samson. And he awoke out of his sleep, and said, I will go out as at other times before, and shake myself. And he wist not that the LORD was departed from him. (Judges16:20)

'Course it means Samson knew not that the LORD was departed from him…

Anyway…

Ecclesiastes 1:6-7 ESV

The wind blows to the south and goes around to the north; around and around goes the wind, and on its circuits the wind returns. All streams run to the sea, but the sea is not full; to the place where the streams flow, there they flow again.
