Should Christians use karate for self defense? Would it be Biblical?

Absolutely, or any other style for that matter!!!

Would it be biblical to let someone beat you?

I think you should do everything in your power to avoid physical confrontation.

Doesn't the Bible say to turn the other cheek? What does that mean?

I know we have talked about this in length recently.
I searched several pages back and couldn't find it though. :shrug

I use a .40cal Glock for self defense. But karate has it's place as well.

Absolutely! Do you have a conceled carry license? Do you take karate?

Karate : No, Tai Kwon Do: Yes.. :nod

Only kidding... given the question is in regards self defense, I imagine most of us wouldn't have the time nor the inclination to start "bible-flicking" when under attack. :study. Who cares whether it's a pure form of matial art? Hey, I'd be hitting below the belt if needed. I think "flight or fight" instinct would just kick-in.

Given our stringent anti-gun-laws in Australia and low amount of gun-related deaths and crime, the above comments don't mean I support carrying a gun, or any other weapon for that matter. :helmet (ready for the flak for that comment)

It's TAE KWON DO, lol.

Do what you have to do to get yourself safely out of the situation. Avaoidance and awareness are the best tools to have.

Nothing wrong with not supporting carrying a gun. Someone has to play the victim. :D

All of the above. However, I think the CPL isn't good in most east coast states now that I've moved from the mid west (darn commies out here!)

I've been out of organized martial arts for years but I've taken an interest Krav Maga.

Krav Maga is interesting, i have a friend who does that, and i practice bjj and aikido,I've done karatedo.

I have issues with tai chi, see my post on yoga, it depends on whose teachinng it, judo is ok, bjj is a cousin of judo and has many of the same techniques.

What about Judo or Tai Chi?

Two very different aspects of martial arts. Tai chi is non-combative, judo is very physically demanding and hard on the body. I'm getting back into it since I completely tore my acl last year at a judo tournament and had reconstructive surgery.

Judo = being elevated and slammed frequently as you progress, lol. Go for it Dave!!

I like BJJ(Brazillian JuJitsu) as well.

I've NEVER seen tai chi used effectively. I've seen most other arts used effectively in real life as well as competetion.

Having done a little tai chi i see at closer to yoga then a martial art, the slow movements are kata, and there a few who do teach that style, most of what you see is the old people doing for excerise, not the actual art. Tai chi even has sparring and sticky hands(wu-shu). Aikido has that as well along with wing chun, choy le fut, jkd,the many versions of arnis de mano, and pa kua chan.

A judoka is lost without his/her gi on and i havent heard of a judoka training without no gi.(in competetion) Bjj does both gi and no gi, with no gi you need to flexible.

Why does it seem like that every one who does BJJ becomes an elitist, lol?

Anyway, ofcourse judo can be done without a gi, I have seen many champions in ufc do some great judo throws, chokes, locks, etc that they did not learn from bjj.

There is also combat tai-chi,lol. These dudes believe tai-chi has killing aspects, ofcourse.

I'm a karateka at heart. Having done many arts my base will always be karate. What does a bjj guy do when he can't get a karateka down? Get knocked out. :D

Check out Karp Paryisan for some good judo highlights in ufc/mma.

Check out Lyoto Machida for good highlights of karate in mma.

Mostly, if anyone is looking to do any style, make sure it's something you enjoy. :yes

A guy who loves to do TKD will be more effecive than a guy doing bjj that hates it,lol.

I respect judo as bjj as judo roots look the history of gracie jujistu , masada was a japanese judoka who taught judo to carlos gracie, and that family added their own to it,an improvement, I'm aware of benefitsof the mixture my bjj instructor did tkd in Brazil, he liked it, he doesn't like the american version of it.All martial arts taught in Brazil have to be street applicable he has told brazil is a third world country with a high police corruption rate, and drug problem.

Anyway brian I just was poking at you, the aikido i do is also done by high ranking judoka. look up Karl Geis. He is an olympic judo champion.Of course years ago.

No, i'm not an elistiist, if i come across that way, i dont mean that, i'm just passionate about bjj. I will be competing in Naga tournimates soon,October, if finances permit.

What level will you be competeting at? Or is it like judo where they just match up weight despite rank?

I hope you get to go and do well!
