If someone is in the army, and are overwhelmed by the enemy so they depart from, or desert the army and join the other side.
That is the meaning of depart from.
- departing from the living God;
Beware, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief in
departing from the living God; but exhort one another daily, while it is called “Today,” lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin. For we have become partakers of Christ if we hold the beginning of our confidence steadfast to the end, Hebrews 3:12-14
We are married to Christ; joined to Him as one spirit with Him.
If we depart from Him, we are no longer one spirit with Him; no longer joined to Him.
Just as a branch is connected in relationship to the Vine.
