The fire in new Mexico engulfing the nuclear site looks pretty major.

One of the top nuclear weapons research facilities in the US will remain closed until Thursday as fire fighters battle a wildfire raging at its boundary.

Only "essential-duties" staff at Los Alamos National Laboratory will be permitted on site on Wednesday.

Officials at the New Mexico facility have said they detected "no off-site releases of contamination".

The town outside the laboratory in the state of New Mexico was evacuated on Monday as the fire raged nearby.

Officials said the nuclear facilities faced "no immediate threat" but warned of damage to houses.

The lab, opened during World War II, led the development of the atomic bomb.

Possible toxic plume

By midday on Tuesday, the Las Conchas fire had grown to 93 sq miles (241 sq km), burning through forests, canyons, and mesas, fuelled by dry timber and powered by strong winds.

Los Alamos blaze from space

The blaze was said to be as close as 50ft (15m) away from the grounds of the lab on Tuesday afternoon, raising fears it could reach a cache of 30,000 drums, each containing 55 gallons (208 litres) of plutonium-contaminated waste.

The fire had reached the lab's southwestern boundary and leapt a state road onto the land, burning roughly an acre, state fire officials said.

"The concern is that these drums will get so hot that they'll burst," Joni Arends, executive director of the Concerned Citizens for Nuclear Safety, told the Associated Press news agency.

"That would put this toxic material into the plume," she added.

But officials said there was very little risk of the fire actually reaching the lab's facilities and that workers were standing near the waste drums to coat them with fire-resistant foam if the blaze got too close.

Authorities said the fire could triple in size in the coming days, the Albuquerque Journal reported.

The fire blew enormous plumes of black smoke over the town of Los Alamos and forced the evacuation of the entire community, which has a population of roughly 12,000.

"We are throwing absolutely everything at this that we got," Democratic Senator Tom Udall of New Mexico said.

The south-western US has been stricken by giant wildfires this year, with millions of acres scorched in New Mexico, Arizona and Texas.

To the west of New Mexico, the largest wildfire in the history of the state of Arizona has been burning for nearly a month.

Gaza flotilla begins to form as first ship heads toward maritime meeting point

French ship already set sail; still unclear when rest of ships will be joining after encountering problems in Greek port, which activists claim was sabotage by Israel.
By Amira HassTags: Gaza flotilla

One ship participating in the flotilla to Gaza has already set sail toward the flotilla's scheduled meeting place in international waters.

The French ship "Dignity" does not intend on anchoring before reaching the meeting point at sea, but it is still unclear how long it will be waiting for the rest of the ships, some of which were said to be sabotaged.

On Monday, the propeller of the Greek-Swedish ship "Juliano" was found broken, and Gaza flotilla organizers said they believed it was deliberate sabotage by Israel. It is still unclear how long it will take to fix the problem to allow the ship to set sail.

Moreover, two Port Authority inspectors appeared at the Greek port of Piraeus on Monday and asked to conduct a surprise inspection of the Canadian ship "Tahrir", after it had already underwent a thorough inspection by the International Naval Surveys Bureau and was said to be ready to sail.

It was found Tuesday that the additional inspection came following a complaint by a private citizen to the Port Authority. The complaint said the Canadian ship was "sea unworthy." A similar complaint was filed against the American ship last week.

According to Greek seamen and lawmakers, it is extremely rare for private citizens to file complaints against private ships.

David Heap, a member of the Gaza flotilla steering committee, said what the flotilla was recently experiencing was a clear example of a bureaucratic delay driven by political motives.

When asked by Haaretz why the flotilla organizers did not respond to Israeli claims that the activists on board the ships are planning to kill Israeli soldiers, Heap said that the organizers are busy preparing for departure which is more important than answering a country "known to be spreading lies about us."

He noted, however, that every flotilla participant had signed a document committing them to non-violent behavior.

On a similar note, does everyone else here notice that this nation was under a dark cloud since 911? Even a decade before that I noticed the thinking starting to change in this country, but especially since 911.

One realization that hit me just recently is that these radical changes can not all be attributed to apocalyptic times, but perhaps the generation that took over that is now in power: the baby-boomers, left over hippies that are either running the government, or are presently on entitlements. I have to give it to this generation; they are definitely movers and changers, but unfortunately not for the better IMO but are worse and more authoritarian than the establishment they protested against when they were younger. This is why, for example you have gestapo type TSA agents fondling everyone's wife and girlfriend and woe betide if you say anything. They'll just detain you without warrant and other severely demented anti-constitutional ideas. Such people that work for the TSA and uphold these Luciferian doctrines are one the road to the lake of fire anyway and are not saved, but I digress.

And generation x I think will follow along in their footsteps; just my feeling.
ok from a gen X that sees it coming after me, the thing you must fear is a generation of undisciplined children (raised by irresponsible parents) who have seen thousands of deaths in their lifetime on video games and are becoming disassociated with what is real and living in pseudo reality of everything is OK and life always has a fairytale ending. Completely unlike the largely unfair battle it actually is full of injustice deaths and disappointments. It's going to be hard for them.

For some of these brutally assaulting someone wil just result in them getting up again. like in video games.

For some in that generation they have no respect for law or consequences for their actions and sadly are really going to struggle if it hits the fan and we dont have our artificial electronic reality around us anymore.
In saying that I am not implying it is all in this generation but for many I see a big problem coming.
Its partly my fault and people like me if some kids have no respect now because I have not been helping teach religious education at school but am now. :)

I see it in public schools kids using protection laws to get away with being horrible brats.

You know I don't agree with a small government, but those PIGS governments in particular have gone way too far.

How far is too far?
The debt ceiling needs to be raised so we can borrow more money to pay our bills.

Does that make any sense at all to be in that position?

We owe $349 billion in interest alone over the next 10 years just for the stimulus package alone. Just the interest... debt service. To service that debt we will spend $100 million per day for the next 10 years. And that's not saying anything about paying on the principle which is 3X that. Just for Obama's stimulus package.

Then we borrowed a trillion for Obamacare. Add TARP to that, cash for clunkers, subsidies to GE and other big corporations for "renewable energy" research and our debt doubles in 2 years.

So what does Obama want to do? Cut spending? No. He says we need more money to spend to get the economy on it's feet... he's doubling down on a failed policy.

And who pays for more government? The government does not create profit, there is no productive turnover. The salaries of government employees along with their retirement and healthcare packages are all paid for by those who do generate capitol. Creating more jobs in the public sector, bigger government, adds to the tax liability shouldered by those making the money, the private sector.

When the public sector requires more money than the private sector can produce you have what's happening in Greece. In 1994 it's debt was 94% that of it's GDP. 2010 it was 143% of the GDP. By contrast our debt in 2000 was 35% of GDP and in 2010 62%.

Again, the public sector is paid for by the private sector. Pelosi said Obamacare would create 100,000 jobs. What she didn't say was that those jobs would be created in the public sector, more government. We are following the PIGS governments' footsteps.

thats a rather bold statement as well a good portion of my fellow guardsmen are tsa, in fact the evil military that protects your right to gripe is the one who did that in the first place. its was called operation safe skies. so if the govt profiled only blacks and mexicans and all dark people as threats would that be ok? all of those colors are the colors i saw that looked and were muslims. alas we have muslims that are white in color in palenstine.

What I find funny is while your community hark on and on about how revolting abortion and homosexuals are you never speak of the most ubiquitous biblical sin that is completely ravaging your country (The USA) and scouring it into the dirt.

Avarice.

I never see your voices directed at them.
the top 1% control 25% of the USA's wealth.
The bottom 57% of Americans (The majority of you) control a further 25%

It's obviously a bad Idea to tax individuals who are already struggling as that's only increasing the burden they feel. Yet what you never seem to realize is that the republican party is calling for more tax cuts upon that top 1% based on the flawed premise that trickle down economics works. It should be obvious that those companies only outsource any savings made. thus there have been 2million private sector jobs lost since those were imposed.

They aren't feeling the pain you feel at all. Their respective companies are making record profits. Yet you continue to subsidies them.

The ultra-rich will dodge recession - MoneyWeek

I don't live in america None of this matters too me that much I just it amusing that you feel your country is in a good position to cast judgment upon others. Or that you smugly think your republican politicians have your best interests at heart at all.

The euro was a mistake I was for it at the time however the fundamental weaknesses of a unified currency over a radically differing financial sphere are apparent. without overarching central control you cannot trust member states to be sensible as when they aren't they end up like Greece although that like most of these things is the fault of the bankers. who are once again I might add just like in America making their record profits free from any interference superseding any law passed by others.

oh, i am agianst avarice. it say its a choice tween greed and sin. that is why if one is really honest on the free market it only works if the persons in culture of that follow said christian values where one voluntarily gives to the poor and doesnt live in wanton pleasure.

but you cant mandate greed away as those that are over that are just as bad. case in point political payoffs in both parties.

25 “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? 26 Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. How far is too far?
I"m not sure there's a magical line or figure, but if a country needs bailing out (PIGS) then we've got a problem. I'd say the US is very much in trouble also.

I'd say when the debt becomes unsustainable then it goes too far. We need investment in infrastructure, but at the same time controlling debt and not sucking the taxpayer. A balance that is not very often achieved.

but your willing to mandate away abortion?
well how can you mandate away money? and how much you want to buy.

would you want the govt to own your soul and dictate who you date, how many kids and how much stuff you need.

self-control cant from laws(laws dont make men honest they control evil) as a man in the military and at that an mp . i know that the govt really cant stop men from terrorism or crime. ie the drug wars.its just a show of the govt making you think your are safe. come july 4th there will be about 20% of the drivers on the road while intoxicated. do you really think that the cops will catch them all? NOT a chance.

agian if the govt taxes them gives them to the poor, what to stop them from stealing from "people" absouletly nothing. at least with the free market others can earn more in and move up.seldom does the govt lift person out of poverty but rewards bad behavior

case in point my state passed a law mandating drug tests for all tanf applicants free of charge. the aclu is now suing(violation of 4th amendments). the sad thing is for me to keep my jobs(guard and my cdl) i must submit random drug tests. i have been tested more then most of these welfare guys would ever have been(3 times last year).
go figure.and i have never been drunk or high!

How can a government stop the sin of avarice?
Easy. Maximum wage. Yet you'd never argue that.

Note Avarice is the Excessive pursuit of wealth to the point of harming others, which is what these individuals are doing. Making profits while other people struggle to feed themselves.

sry
Like Eygpt in the old testement, when Eygpts power and might was brought down, could be Europe is about to crash and burn.?

really is that something called socialism? yup.

so what about the mega corps that employ overseas?

reah right. all they would do is go underground and do it all ilegally. you cant change greed.i am curious to how much a corp makes that is run by board members who answer to the stock holders? the more money the corps make the more they make.so the wealthy wouldnt invest.

so your answer is more govt intrusion. that was the point.

sadly you dont know me. i dont pity any rich person who is taxed. i live one of wealthiest counties in the state yet we have much poverty in some areas. Govt again doesnt work to help this. you cant make any give or do for the poor they will just go around it.

what is the maximum income you say? if you say below a billion then what of this very instrument we use to talk?bill gates is mult-billionaire and yet gives it all away. why not encourage that instead of the just the opposite.

i know what averise and the govts of most western countries are just as guilty. tell me why would a multi-millionaire run for a lower paying office? to make more by his position of influence.

there are very few broke politicians these days

just so you know these are paid to much

hollywood actors and actress
models
sports figures
politicians(should be for love of nation with no pay and or just to cover expenses and security protection)
obama wouldnt ask what he could do for the nation but the reverse.
some ceos.
singers and musicians

im sorry reading lines or looking pretty isnt worth a million dollar pay check.

but that is my opinion.

Are you proposing a maximum wage limit?

I disagree. I agree i helping the poor, and I believe the government is one means to do so, but I don't agree with limiting wages for high income earners. It decreases an incentive to work IMO, and that ripples through the economy. If you're going to help low income earners, then focus on building them up rather than trying to tear down high income earners.

Jason made a point that you can't change greed. Well without Christ that is ;) Or at least without Christ it isn't worth it.

I don't believe the government can nor should try to solve greed from the high income earners. That needs to be an education and social work through the community to chagne their attitudes, not being punished by the government becasue they happen to earn a lot.

do i percieve correctly that this is close to what the american religious right and true consertives espouse?

From what I said in my post, possibly. But I do believe in some social policies that the American religious right seems to take issues with.

personally i hate greed but lets be real. greed runs the drug wars and porn and also abortion. all but one are illegal and yet how many lives ruined.

porn stars are abused and often die from aids and have std and yet the contra arguement didnt list this as a form of avarice
nor disagreed or agreed with the or even commented on the drug wars that are in vain. no i am not for legalisation nor do i assume that peebles is either. just making a case using the drug war and how if people want to do something bad enough and if its rampant enough no law will stop it. and greed is one of those things and also the secondary result is why work hard if the feds are going to take it?
