Suicide--forgivable?

Every sin is forgivable, except to refuse the Holy Spirit to speak thru you when forced to take the mark.

I missed this reply. This is totally true. This is why we have CHRIST. It only applies if that person is still alive and have asked forgiveness.

Your a good sport Classik, I think we are soul buddies....
I'll have to tone it down & be a peaceful guy....
Thanks for being such a nice guy!

I'm not tempted to kill myself. Quite the opposite; I'm more attached to life now than ever. Its just, I look back, and I've known a few people who committed suicide, and several who attempted. I guess my problem with the suicide=Hell thing is that it ignores the sheer desperation that I see in most suicides. Pain, disease, poverty, misery, madness, being pushed too far....all that stuff, you know, the stuff that we forget about when we say "Oh, he was depressed/had "mental illness." That's why he shot himself." Riiiight....the real reasons are much more complex, and say a lot more about our fallen world, than something as simple as "he got really sad and offed himself."

For that reason, I would think that a Christian answer to suicide and suicidal behavior would have to address issues such as poverty, stress, loneliness, teenage bullying, sexuality, drug and alcohol misuse, and the factors that come together to "push someone over the edge."

I just don't know what to think. Christians are called to persevere, right? We're told that life has inherent worth, even in the face of pain and adversity, right?

But what about special situations? I think of the teenagers who are driven to despair by bullying, which these days is made 100x worse by facebook and other online social sites. I think about people who've known nothing but pain their whole lives. I think about people who may be facing chronic, painful illness with no one to care about them, and I think...

...what if a lot of suicides are really our society's fault, not the fault of the individuals involved? What if suicides are more an indictment of a society that rips people to shreds and expects them to "deal with it," "take responsibility," or "pick themselves up by their boot straps" ?

I personally would not commit suicide, hopefully. I mean, maybe if I had terminal cancer or something I'd consider it. Maybe...

...but what about people who get pushed over the edge? Does God really judge them that harshly? Having known the pain of a severe psychotic break, I can see why "crazy" people kill themselves so often. We always blame "mental illness," when the real problems seem to be: social class, stress, family dysfunction, sin, and the mental health industry. I can't even imagine what life is like for very poor people with severe mental problems. I'm blessed to have a white collar family behind me, and the mental health industry *still* tried to destroy me.

Anyway, just a random question. I don't think people should go around killing themselves like ancient stoics or anything, but I do wonder if suicide is, in some instances, forgivable.

Thoughts?

18 Because you did not obey the voice of the Lord nor execute His fierce wrath upon Amalek, therefore the Lord has done this thing to you this day. 19 Moreover the Lord will also deliver Israel with you into the hand of the Philistines. And tomorrow you and your sons will be with me. The Lord will also deliver the army of Israel into the hand of the Philistines." 1 Samuel 28:18-19

4 Then Saul said to his armorbearer, "Draw your sword, and thrust me through with it, lest these uncircumcised men come and thrust me through and abuse me." But his armorbearer would not, for he was greatly afraid. Therefore Saul took a sword and fell on it. 5 And when his armorbearer saw that Saul was dead, he also fell on his sword, and died with him. 6 So Saul, his three sons, his armorbearer, and all his men died together that same day. 1 Samuel 31:4-6

Just as Samuel had prophesied the death of Saul and his sons, it came to pass.

Saul committed suicide, yet Samuel said he would be with him [in paradise].

I think that's a very good observation of scripture and addresses the OP nicely.

God always looks at the why... and always looks at the heart.

Saul said to his armor-bearer, “Draw your sword and run me through, or these uncircumcised fellows will come and run me through and abuse me.”

Saul was going to be tortured and murdered by the Philistines and he knew it. God said he was going to die that day so in his mind, I think he was taking the merciful way out.

What?

Regardless if it is a sin or not, you are forgiven for suicide because it is not Blasphemy.

If someone knows God, then why commit suicide?

So far all I seen is this concept of Mental illness.

Php_4:8 Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.

The Word instructs to think on these things, I almost get the feeling some believe that we make excuses for not doing what the Word says do, and the Word never would have said it had there been a situation where it was impossible to obey.

It's not God's will for you to commit suicide. That is throwing away(killing) the gift of life he gave you. Whether or not you will go to hell, just don't do it.

i decided that the easiest way to go about this is just beg and plead w/ God 2 take me. Do U think if sum1 asks enough and means it deep down that God will answer there prayers? I mean Ive already been told that God answers prayers.

Now that is interesting' even though I have read those Scriptures countless times I have never equated them with suicide for people of today. I have always been taught that suicide is unforgivable. Simply because the dead can't ask for forgiveness of that fatal sin.
