That Time Again

This is a little off topic, but our son is scheduled to graduate from Central Michigan University next December. For about three years now, he's let his hair grow long. I mean, it's down to to the middle of his back. Some guys can pull this off and rock nice looking long hair. Joshua isn't one of them. It's just looks messy and bad.

I've told him as he's interviewing for internships and eventually career jobs, he is going to limit his options greatly if he doesn't cut his hair. I've prayed to our God, "Please, please, please do not open a door that proves my advice wrong. Please don't undo what I've been trying to dad him thru!"

My luck, he'll nail a job with some young advertising agency that's open minded about this stuff where the CEO rocks a neck tat. I say all this knowing it could be a lot worse, but God should know my plan is best.

You know where I work... there are a few male college new hires in my building with long hair and pony tails.

Culture is shifting...
 
StoveBolts don't start drawing conclusions by this comment, but our sons look like they could be brothers! LOL

Here from a recent wedding we went to, Joshua with his gf, and our daughter Bethany off to the right. This is by far the best his hair ever looks.

He certainly landed a pretty one, and he's at CMU so you've done a few things right!

I'm seeing this more and more. Good kids with long hair. They are tearing down the stigma. I'm sure you are proud of him, and I'm sure he is a leader.
 
Mike and Steve you both have good looking sons (and daughter too). Can tell they are decent kids. Wouldn't worry they will both grow out of long hair (probably :lol )
 
Back in the day when I was cooking for a living...
My hair reached the middle of my back.
My earring was a real saffire. (Clear light blue)
I had mailed the executive chef of the Opryland hotel my resume. He called me and asked me to come by and fill out a job application.
I went in to the trailer that they used for the HR department. (Opryland hotel is a huge, massive complex of exhibition halls, banquet rooms, shops, restaurants and music venues. )
As I got an application the lady who handed it to me told me with a sour look on her face that I'd have to get a haircut in order to get a first interview. I told her that I just had one... didn't need another. She then said that my hair would have to get cut above the collar and my earring would have to come out.
So I tossed her the clipboard and walked out. I quickly found a job at a country club as a sous chef (second in command) with a nice salary.
The executive chef of opryland called me again a couple of days later and asked if I had done as he had asked because he couldn't find my paperwork.
I told him the story of my conversation with the lady at HR...for several minutes I got to hear all kinds of German and French words they never teach at school.
He then (in English) told me that if ANYTHING changes with my job to please call him direct...to never go to the HR department and to come straight to his office. He would handle the HR department.

He does tend to lead in his own little circle of friends. For the most part, this means leading them online with some sort of Mortal Combat type of game. :)

He knows I wish he got it cut, because I'm pretty conservative like that, but I don't hassle him about it.

But there you go. It's not that you can't land jobs; just that you're eliminating yourself from consideration with some. If someone knows that and takes the little disadvantage in the marketplace, okay.

Certain environments require a very particular grooming and look.
Usually the ultra high end culinary world doesn't care about hair unless it's a beard... and that's the big "no-no". Mustaches are allowed but frowned upon. Earrings are an almost must have.
In NY I was very much acceptable. Well inside of grooming standards. But when I got to TN... only Opryland HR department cared... certainly not the Executive Chef.

But as for the norm...yeah there's business conservative dress and getting away from that is a death sentence...

At the time I was a "hot shot" chef. There were only a very select few who could cook and keep up with me. That's why I got away with stuff. I wasn't looking for a job at a grits and biscuits joint. I was looking to keep high end.

I rocked a mullet back in the 80's, and I was losing options before doing what I had to do. It's been a decade since I had to worry about bed-head. :thumbsup

I used to aspire to be Cory Hart. Now, it's something like Bruce Willis. LOL
 
Well I saw something today that really rather disturbed me. As I was riding my bike I swear a woman that walked by me was wearing nothing but a bra and sleeping shorts. :eek2Honestly! If wearing pajamas in public wasn't bad enough, (except for pajama dayfor kids at school) at least they've finished getting dressed! Isn't that illegal to go outside half naked?

You had a photo uploaded of your ink; my wife and I talked to a young lady with the whole of John 3.16 tattooed on her wrist area; I'm sure she was effectively using it as a talking point witness tool; if so, after some years - and possibly by now already; it was some years ago - she will likely consider whether to go back to the artist to refresh any fading of her ink.

So is having the ink refreshed something that you felt was necessary to do in the end?
