A lot of people misunderstand the 6th Bowl of Revelation. Some have suggested that this is the Rapture and others that this is when the Euphrates river dries up for a bunch of angry Chinese men to storm the Middle East. Let’s look at the text:

The sixth angel poured out his bowl on the great river Euphrates, and its water was dried up, to prepare the way for the kings from the east.
Rev 16:13 And I saw, coming out of the mouth of the dragon and out of the mouth of the beast and out of the mouth of the false prophet, three unclean spirits like frogs.
Rev 16:14 For they are demonic spirits, performing signs, who go abroad to the kings of the whole world, to assemble them for battle on the great day of God the Almighty.
Rev 16:15 ("Behold, I am coming like a thief! Blessed is the one who stays awake, keeping his garments on, that he may not go about naked and be seen exposed!")
Rev 16:16 And they assembled them at the place that in Hebrew is called Armageddon.

First thing to note is the word “great†in front of “river Euphratesâ€Â. That should be your first clue that the river is potentially being considered symbolic.

Second thing to ask yourself is just where the river is. Answer: Iraq, more specifically, Babylon. In antiquity the ancient river ran through downtown Babylon right under the outside fortifications. It was one of the things that made Babylonians so prideful for they knew that in the event of a siege they would have an endless water supply.

Third thing to recognize is that “great†is also used of Babylon in Revelation, most notably Rev. 16:19

Rev 16:19 The great city was split into three parts, and the cities of the nations fell, and God remembered Babylon the great, to make her drain the cup of the wine of the fury of his wrath.

Fourth thing to notice is Jesus saying that He is returning like a thief in the night. To whom? The thief in the night comes to break into your house to rob, steal and destroy. That is the point of the idiom. Jesus is coming specifically to overthrow the world system of unbelief (“cities of the nationsâ€Â). Of course, by silence, we can’t rule out what post-tribbers believe on just this – so don’t get me wrong. I’m pointing out that the Thief in the Night TITN idiom is inappropriate to describe the Rapture, in fact, it describes the wrath. Paul made this oh so clear in 1Thess. 5:4

1Th 5:4 But you are not in darkness, brothers, for that day to surprise you like a thief.

Fifth thing to ask is why Euphrates and Babylon. Why bring them up at all? Well in history ancient Babylon was overthrown by a thief in the night named Cyrus. Cyrus also means son of the east, by the way. The Persian empire lay siege to Babylon but they could not penetrate its robust defenses. So Cyrus devised a plan to dry up the river Euphrates and then sneak in to the city on the river bead like a thief in the night while the city was involved in a drunken party you can read out in Daniel 5.

Sixth, Cyrus was named by God for this deed 200 years earlier by the prophet Isaiah in 44:28 – 45:1ff where God calls Cyrus his anointed and shepherd. So, very obviously, Cyrus is a type of Christ and a pattern of the TITN overthrow of a wicked and prideful system.

Seventh, “great†Babylon in Rev. 16:19 is equated the cities of the nations. So the pattern of ancient Babylon’s fall at the hands of an ancient thief in the night is being repeated here at the 6th and 7th bowls. Jesus will come and destroy them all and set up His Kingdom.

Have you been watching too much of that Revelations TV series?

Seriously,
The Bible is a history book. It is the only best authenticated work in history! No other religion's or works come close to the evidence. There is no doubt that the Bible we have today correctly reflects the original teaching of the authors inspired by the Holy Spirit.

Homer's Illiad is next in line regarding acrruacy and there are huge gaps of time between the original and surviving copies.

hhmmm I beg to differ

Hello,

world's best history book? I beg to differ:)....first ya gotta prove it without mistakes to be taken authentically.

hopefearmercy:)

I think the thief in the night idiom used here at the 6th Bowl and elsewhere is key to any understanding about Jesus Second Coming:

1) Jesus does NOT return to Christians as a Thief in the Night

1Th 5:2 For you yourselves are fully aware that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night.
1Th 5:3 While people are saying, "There is peace and security," then sudden destruction will come upon them as labor pains come upon a pregnant woman, and they will not escape.
1Th 5:4 But you are not in darkness, brothers, for that day to surprise you like a thief

2) The Thief in the Night idiom is derived from the type of Cyrus when he snuck into ancient Babylon at night to steal and destroy their fat, happy, prideful little lives of luxury, lush and labido; all the things that mark worldly and unholy living. (see opening discussion of this thread)

3) The Thief in the Night idiom sees its fulfillment globally in the day of the Lord when Jesus comes as a thief to "great" Babylon.

1Th 5:2 For you yourselves are fully aware that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night.
1Th 5:3 While people are saying, "There is peace and security," then sudden destruction will come upon them as labor pains come upon a pregnant woman, and they will not escape.

Just as those of ancient Babylon, lived pridefully and securely, thinking that no harm would come to them, so has "great" Babylon who "sits as a queen". When God remembers "great" Babylon, it is just after Jesus declares He is coming as a Thief and as a result, GLOBALLY, the cities of the nations fall.

Rev 16:15 ("Behold, I am coming like a thief! Blessed is the one who stays awake, keeping his garments on, that he may not go about naked and be seen exposed!")

Rev 16:19 The great city was split into three parts, and the cities of the nations fell, and God remembered Babylon the great, to make her drain the cup of the wine of the fury of his wrath.

As Christians, we will not be surprised by the Thief as long as we are not living for the world. Staying awake means to watch your life to make sure the cares of this world do not put you into the world's slumber of materialism. Keeping His garments on means holding fast to Christ's righteousness, and of course the idea of naked is like Adam and Eve when they fell into sin.

How does the average person react to a theif in the nite.
He is comming as a theif in the night therfore, believe it, we are going to feel;

1) surprised
2) shocked
3) anger
4) you will wail
5) you will not be a happy camper.

So why are we going to feel all the above. I thought when He apeared from out of the clear blue sky with power and great glory we would all rejoice and be happy.

Yet He says that he is comming as a theif and all the kinfreds of the earth will wail because of Him. Something is not right.

Perhaps He will be revealed to you and you will wail because......

1 Thessalonians 5
1 ¶ But concerning the times and the seasons, brothers, you have no need for it to be written.
2 For you yourselves know accurately that the day of the Lord, as a thief in the night, so it comes.
3 For when they say, Peace and safety! Then suddenly destruction comes upon them, like the travail to the one having babe in womb, and not at all shall they escape.
4 But you, brothers, are not in darkness, that the Day should overtake you as a thief.
5 You are all sons of light and sons of day; we are not of night, nor of darkness.
6 ¶ So then, we should not sleep, as the rest also do, but we should watch and be sober.
7 For those sleeping sleep by night, and those having been drunk are drunk by night.
8 But we being of day should be sober, "having put on the breastplate" of faith and love, and the hope of "salvation as a helmet;" Isa. 59:17
9 because God has not appointed us to wrath, but for obtaining salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ,
