Can you imagine trying to walk in this world without the tools Christ gave us? I cannot.

Free said:^ And yet, that doesn't address the point made in Vic's post regarding the obvious abuse of gifts in Pentecostal and Charismatic circles. There are no Apostles (in the sense of the office or position such as the original Apostles) but we are all apostles, that is, one's who are sent.
No one is saying there isn't flesh anywhere else. The problem is that there is a lack of balance, at least on the Protestant side of things. Nearly all Charasmatic/Pentecostal churches I've been to are at the extreme end of things where anything having the appearance of being spiritual is of God and goes unchecked, and any questioning or opposition is of Satan. And in every one of those churches, tongues is practiced in the precise manner that Paul says is wrong in 1 Cor 14.Boanerges said:I have spent enough time in non charismatic churches to see at least as much flesh there. Denying and quenching the Holy Spirit is at least equal to the offenses listed in the OP. Everywhere there is flesh we will see corruption.
I should not have made the statement as strongly as I did. My reaction is more against the many who are currently claiming the office of Apostle for themselves but in whom can be seen much error and sin.Boanerges said:As far as there being no Apostles I would like to see a scriptural reference for that.
It is also worth noting some qualifications given in the choosing of an Apostle:Boanerges said:(Bold emphasis mine)
Eph 4:11 And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;
Eph 4:12 For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:
Eph 4:13 Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ:
You will notice that I purposely used "Apostles" and "apostles," defining "Apostles" as "the office or position such as the original Apostles," and "apostles" as "ones who are sent."Boanerges said:I would also like to see a scripture reference for us all being Apostles as that plainly contradicts this verse:
Exactly. That is at least part of what has been argued already. Tongues, as it is practiced in every Charasmatic and Pentecostal church I've been to, directly contradicts what the Bible states as acceptable. It should therefore be corrected or discarded.Boanerges said:Lastly, as believers we should thoroughly examine what we are taught and compare it to the Word of God. If it does not line up with the Word of God then (at least that portion) should be discarded least we unhappily become like these fellows:

Unless, of course, you don't think that the Great Commission applies to us.
