How do you pronounce tte?

It's hard to explain (I was afraid you were going to ask). The first t is an "unvoiced" syllable. It's like you're saying "teh" without making an actual sound. Sort of like a rest in music, a pause. This is followed immediately by the syllable "teh" where it is voiced.

Japanese: making sounds no-one can hear.

Not really. It's more like you bite your tongue, count off one-half second, then say "teh".

You can try adding a pinch of baking soda to your saline solution. That might help buffer the solution and make it less irritating.
