[_ Old Earth _] The future of Humanity

Rev216

Member
From a Christian perspective the future of humanity lies in the eventual return of Jesus Christ and the resurrection of the dead.

For those who don't believe that will happen, what do you think the future of humanity holds? Will we ever be able to get off this rock? Will we continue to evolve?

We're continuing to evolve now. The issue is that with medical care and science, we are getting increasingly good at negating the evolutionary effects of formerly harmful mutations, and by genetic counseling, getting better at preventing the spread of these mutations.

No one really knows the long-term effects of this.

I know I should just leave this along, but I can't. you say we're getting better at controlling mutations and preventing the spread of these mutations. Mutations in it name is a destructive force in the DNA and is not that species are trying to "evolve" but in fact almost allway renders the offspring horrible disfigured and or dead.
] Due to the damaging effects that mutations can have on cells, organisms have evolved mechanisms such as DNA repair to remove mutations. Quote from Wikipedia, I admit I don't like Wip, and although they use the word evolved in this explanation then goes on the to say its a bad thing. this is what happens when we mutate..

Interesting question. It may well be that climate change and other environmental factors make life very different in the future. We aren't seeing any signs of being able to leave the planet in any numbers and certainly no prospects of settling anywhere else without that settlement being maintained from Earth.

Regarding evolution, I suspect any changes won't be natural. The rich may well begin to deliberately alter their own children through genetic selection. Today it's possible to choose the sex of a child and avoid certain genetic conditions. I would imagine the range of things that can be chosen will increase greatly. Obviously these changes are unacceptable to society now, but I suspect that over time that resistance will crumble.

Mutation is any imperfect copying of genetic material from parent to offspring. It is sometimes destructive, often neutral and occaisonally makes the offspring more likely to survive and reproduce. In an environment where food is high in the trees, you can see how a mutation that provided a longer neck would have benefitted the ancestor of the giraffe.

Sometimes benefit and harm are related, as in genetic conditions with heterozygote advantage.

Species don't try to evolve any more than a dropped stone tries to fall. It happens because of natural processes.

No I don't see that, If the giraffe had to grow a longer neck to reach the food, then why not just evolve and be able to climb. same difference, you say they changed..

Yes I know species don't try, reason is because they can't that was just play on word on my part. You know like "when monkeys fly".

I drafted a response to the giraffe point, but there are lots of threads about whether or not evolution occurs and this one is about the future of humanity. I'm happy to discuss evolution with you in a different thread if you want.

Thanks Rev216

I’m one of those dark-age types who rejects evolution, although I do find your question thought-provoking. In prophetic terms, the Bible predicts increasing political and financial upheaval leading to an Orwellian social order preceding the return of Christ, Christ’s millennial reign, and our induction to eternity. Orwell’s copycats don’t scare me. I’m not smart enough to conceive eternity. The Millennium fascinates me. Imagine an era of renewed natural splendor, limitless clean energy, and a curious mix of horse-drawn travel and teleportation. Such may be the magic of the King’s Peace.

Bob quite honestly, I to have seen those threads and have been in alot of them, so in a debate over the so called evolution of the giraffe would just be rehashing it again so soon..I am sure it will come up again.

the only thing i will add is this, we aint improving but rather are rushing to the end times. we like to think that we are better then those in the past, yet we have just as much blood on our hands as they did then, if not more!

That is an interesting thought...what mutations have we seen in the human race recently that have beneficial? As far as I know the only mutations documented in recent history lead to negative conzequences. IE mutations leading to cancer ect...

Right now, as has been pointed out, civilization has allowed humans with genetic flaws to reproduce and not be eliminated by natural selection. A million years ago my bad eyesight would have made me a prime candidate for a saber tooth tiger dinner snack. Now, I just wear glasses.

The exciting, but potentially dangerous, future facing us in the next century is that we will have the knowledge to perform gene manipulation. Rather than letting Mother Nature select the brightest and strongest, parents will be able to specify in advance that their child is to be a combination of Einstein and Michael Jordan. Genetic manipulation will create new haves and have nots that cannot be corrected by environmental changes.

execiting nothing thats the man playing GOD! we should correct the diseases but not make super athletes and super warriors. that is where i drawn the line.

eugenics all over again. we have failed to learn from that junk, thankfully on a large(global) scales its never been done, but hitler did it and so did stalin and the japenese.

Man plays God all the time. We are currently doing it today with our earthly environment. The technology will be available. The challenge will be to use it wisely.

we have the right to be good stewards with the earth but to make supermen is wrong. and given our so called morals of the day i dont have any confidence in the proper use of that tech.

which you rather prefer soft despotism via selective genetics or a cruel depsotism at least with the later you can fight back. you will know what he is the former is more gradual and deadlier.

Like Jason said, I also believe mankind is running full speed toward its end, as we know it. With everything goin on in the world over the last 100 years I don't think we have much time left. come Lord Jesus...

Matthew 24:43But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what time of night the thief was coming, he would have kept watch and would not have let his house be broken into. 44So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.
