The Justification of the Ungodly

"For if Abraham was justified by works, he would have something to glory about; but not before God. For what does the scripture say? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness. Now to him that does works is the reward not reckoned of grace, but of debt. But to him that does no works, but believes on him that justifies the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness" Romans 4:2-5.

Who are the ungodly? The ungodly are all that have been born after Adam. "Wherefore, as by one man (Adam) sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned" Romans 5:12.

Faith is counted for righteousness:
"Faith is not a work performed to earn righteousness. Rather, it is the means through which God can impute the righteousness of Christ to the sinner. He is thus "accounted" righteous, not made righteous. The former is the work of justification. The latter is the process of sanctification". (Taken from my Bible notes).

But to him that does no works: Wages received are not a manifestation of grace; they are earned. Works remove grace from salvation. This is why salvation is by faith alone. It is by faith alone, because it is by Christ alone. Jesus justifies the ungodly and reconciles them unto God, 2 Corinthians 5:18-19. It is all of God.

You nailed the problem! They are placing no distinction between Justification and Sanctification, they are combing the two for salvation. Which results in faith + works = salvation.

There must be a distinction between the two in order to properly understand salvation.

I always look at it like this.

JUSTIFICATION: God's work for us in Jesus Christ. The Gospel.
SANCTIFICATION: God's work in us by the Holy Spirit. The Christian life.
It is heresy to confuse the two.
