Actually, it's not that I don't theologians. I just find that often they're wrong. I no longer believe things simply because someone who is supposed to know says it. I did that. It lead me into false doctrines. Just because someone is a theologian doesn't mean they're write when when they speak or write. A theologian is just someone who has studied a particular system of theology. If they were fool proof they'd all agree, but they don't. Try to get a Catholic theologian to agree with a Protestant one on a lot of issues. Good luck with that. Some theologians say you can lose our salvation and some say you can't. Both can't be right.
At some point, if you really want to know the bible, you'll have to turn to them for the proper understanding. We really
cannot know it all on our own.
Why do you assume I don't know the Bible? Is it because I disagree with you? Maybe I've studied this subject for several years now. Maybe I've gone through all of the pertinent passages that deal with the body, soul, and spirit. Maybe I've looked at how these words are used throughout the Scriptures rather than just looking in a dictionary.
I've found that the more I know,,,the more I realize how little I know.
I'm NOT posting something that is contrary to scripture....
Christianity is based on both the O.T. and the N.T.
What do you think the soul is?
What do you think the spirit is?
What is the body?
I believe I answered this yesterday. The Soul is a living being which consists of the body and the breath or spirit of God.
The spirit is the breath of God
The body is the physical part of us that is created from the elements of the earth.
Have you not noticed that the O.T. uses the word "heart" to mean different things?
Does it mean different things or is it used different ways?
Do you think that 4,000 years ago people knew about the SOUL?
How much do you think they knew about THE BODY?
Absolutely, it's in the Bible. It's in the first chapter in the Bible.
They knew what the could see.
So let's try it your way.
Genesis 2:7
God made a man from the dust of the ground.
At that point it was just a dead BODY.
Then God breathed into the man THE BREATH OF LIFE,,,and THEN man became a living being. GOD BREATHED INTO THE BODY THE BREATH OF LIFE AND THE BODY BECAME ALIVE.
Still nothing about the soul or the spirit.
SO FAR we have a body that is alive and liviing.
1. Could you give me YOUR version of the above?
Are you reading something into scripture that IS NOT THERE?
In your statement above I highlighted the word spirit in read and the word soul in blue.
This is where the translation let's you down. The word Neshamah, which is translated breath in that passage means wind or breath. It is also translated figuratively as spirit. That is why I post, the breath, spirit, of life. It's to let people know that it is the same word that is translated as breath or spirit. If you look in your lexicon you'll find that spirit is figure of speech. So, if you see a phrase such as the spirit of life, it's a figure of speech. It literally means the breath or wind of life. So keep in mind whatever you see the word spirit in your Bible its's a figure of speech.
So, you see, we do have the spirit mentioned by the time man comes to life. When the spirit joined with that man together they formed a living soul.
2. The trichotomy of man is NOT AN OPINION.
Do you have A BODY? What is it?
Do you have A SOUL? What is it?
Do you have a SPIRIT? What is it?
Forget about theologians.
Tell me what you know to be a fact and then we'll continue.
It is an opinion. According to the Scriptures the spirit or breath that is in man is God's, not man's. It is God's spirit or breath. It's not man. Man consists of the elements of the earth as we see in Gen 2:7. The soul is the life that is in man. Every living thing has God's breath or spirit in it. That's what keeps it alive. If God takes away His spirit or breath man dies. If the breath or spirit are taken away there is no more soul. It's like water. If you combine hydrogen and oxygen you water. If you take either the hydrogen or the oxygen away, you no longer have water.
Does man have body, soul, and spirit? Yes. The body is the man, the soul is his life or his whole person, and the spirit or breath is God.
Part of the confusion comes from the English translation using the word spirit. In English people tend to think of a disembodied living being. The problem is that the Greek and Hebrew words had no such meaning. There are two Hebrew words, Neshamah and ruach, and one Greek word pneuma, that mean breath or wind. They are sometimes translated into English figuratively as spirit. However, these word do not mean a disembodied living being. There is nothing to remotely suggest that. They mean wind or breath. When the original readers saw these passages they read wind or breath. There was nothing to give them the idea of a disembodied living being. This is why so many Christians today are confused. They see the word spirit and they import this idea of a disembodied living being into the text. The translators should have left the word as wind or breath and let the reader figure out if it was meant to be literal or a figure of speech.
