How about Christian groups writing songs that really have nothing to do with "Christianity". Like Reliant K singing about the Thundercats cartoon or the Sadie Hawkins Dance...

I think we get all caught up in labeling groups. If a song is inspirational to you and makes you think of God or worship or Creation or peace or purity or love - wonderful. Worship to it.

If a song makes you think about lust, debauchery, brutality, evil, etc. - run away from it.

There are songs that don't say a word about Christ' but might tell you how to live a Christian life. Or a song by a Christian singing about don't cheat on your wife. But because it is Bible based and song and played by a Christian and put on the air. On Christian radio' we Christians take that song and use it. Christian music has come a long way. And God is not limited to one style of it. I think the quote up above puts this thing in it's proper perspective. I am a versatile musician' I like all types of music' and I will continue to use it for God's glory. Rock Gospel' R&B Gospel' Jazz Gospel' Country Gospel' and on and on. People need to stop trying to put God in a box.

But I still do enjoy rock music, but mostly for religious songs, it is hard to fully hear the lyrics, which are really important. (Of course I'm not saying lyrics aren't important in non religious music)
IMO, it just doesn't feel as moving, and it isn't played much at church. Only when Christian rock bands visit, and I never heard rock music at mass, only really energetic non rock/pop/r&b/rap etc songs

I come in late on this discussion and am somewhat surprised to hear that true spirit-filled born-again Christians can play such utter rubbish in a church environment where the Holy Spirit is present. Worship is supposed to bring the presence of the Lord, but that type of music must frighten him away!

I want to ask you people who are FOR this type of music if anything has changed in you from the day you got saved. I want to spend as much time as possible each day in His presence and not with one foot in the world. We should be going from glory to glory being more like Him each day. If I have not gone forward with God in one week then I class myself as a backslider.

What am I trying to put over? We are not of this world. We might live in it, but we do not have to adapt to it. By the way the person on this forum who says he hopes to play a few jigs for Christ in heaven should know that there can be no beat as there is no time in heaven. You wont be playing, you will be too busy worshiping Him.

Where are the acceptable songs that a whole family can sing in a church together? I am glad the heavy metal in NOT played in any of the churches that I preach in.

You know I find it kind of funny that Jeff Mills said what he said above in the second paragraph. For me personally christian rock music saved my life. I started listening to it when I was going through a really hard time in my life. A time where I was depressed and angry and wasn't really trusting God. But GOD put this music in front of me and drew me to Him so I could be healed. I feel so unworthy at times that God would do something like that for me to save my life from the path that I was on. Everyday I ask that the Lord will make me more like Him. That He will set me apart so that people will ask me why I am different. The thing that makes me angry but also makes me smile is the fact that people are trying to guess what only GOD knows. To say that God would run away from Christian rock music is like saying that you can read his mind. And a question for all those out there who don't like Christian rock. Are you saying that those who feel they are called by God to bring the lost to Him through this kind of music are in reality pawns of Satan? How do you answer to those who have come to Christ by hearing this music and feeling God's presence there and wanting to know more about Him? I understand that maybe you are from a different generation than those of us who like this Christian rock. Many times I think that people assume that those who are involved in Christian rock are also involved in the "scene" that is associated with that genre of music, but in most realities those same people are highly respected for not being involved in that "scene". There is also the journey of Lacey Mosley of the *heaven-forbid* Christian rock band Flyleaf.
Here is a little part of what she went through to find God.

"Full Name: Lacey Nicole Mosley.
Birth Date: September 4, 1981.
Religon: Christian.

Throughout her earlier years, she was an outspoken atheist. At age ten, she began dabbling in drugs, and at thirteen fell into it even worse. "I was trying to figure out who I was and anything to separate me from my family, or to separate me from my situation at home was good to me," Mosley said. "It was like a warzone going home."

When she was fourteen years old, she received a bass guitar for Christmas and began playing Nirvana and Green Day songs with her brother who played guitar. At sixteen, Mosley was kicked out of her home after a fight with her mother involving the police, and moved to Gulfport, Mississippi to live with her grandparents. There she attended high school and joined a band that was in need of a bass player. She went on to sing for the band, and picked up guitar so she could write her own songs. During that same year, she went through bouts of depression and had suicidal tendencies. "I lost my boyfriend, I lost my brothers and sisters that I watched every day, and I lost my drugs that I did. I really felt like that was the end," she said. "So I decided to kill myself the next day." After her grandmother forced her to go to church, Mosley experienced something supernatural that brought her to God. "My life totally changed after that."

"I used to be in a really negative band, and that seemed to almost fuel my emptiness because that's what the songs were about." After a while, she quit the band and began playing by herself.

After visiting her mother in Arlington, she formed a new band and ended up staying in the town rather than returning to Mississippi. Eventually, they disbanded and Mosley moved to Temple, Texas where she met drummer James Culpepper. They began writing songs with Lacey on guitar as they searched for a bass player. Eventually, Jared Hartmann and Sameer Bhattacharya called Lacey and asked if she would like to audition for their band, Sporos. She ended up not getting the spot. Later on, Sporos broke up, and Jared and Sameer joined James and Lacey in a band called Listen. They went through two bass players before they found Pat Seals and became Passerby. In June of 2004, the band changed their name to Flyleaf."

And after all of this she started a CHRISTIAN ROCK BAND!!!!!

I am sorry if you think that I am being a brat, but for me personally this music has brought me close to God in ways that I didn't know about when I was 12 or 13. Now God is my best friend. God can change anything that seems bad into something for his glory. And if you feel like harrassing me then go ahead. Thank you for your time. God Bless!!

Yeah foreveryoung, keep going, I am not going to stop playing Gospel rock, Gospel R&B' and other types, just because some people think otherwise. If the music is dedicated to God what is the problem folks ? God knows that, not everybody has the same taste, because He built us that way. And the different genres of music were in the mind of God first' before man. Because man can come up with nothing that was not in the mind of God first.

This whole argument, and reading over these posts, somehow reminded me of something I heard about years ago.

A pastor ( I had his name once, but have since forgotten it ) had been listening to the theme song of the TV show Mister Ed ( you know, "A horse is a horse, of course, of course...") backwards and insisted that he heard satanic messages in it. A classic case of backmasking!

So he got the young people of his church together and they burned Mister Ed memoribilia at the church and he denounced the show as evil.

I find this odd, as the man who wrote the song was an old cowboy or something, and as far as I know had no dealings with the Evil One. Even Alan Young, who played Wilbur Post on the show, was shocked when he heard about it, and insisted it simply isn't true.

My question is, what was a pastor even doing listening to the theme song of a silly TV show backwards, intent on finding evil? Especially one from that long ago, before the concept of backmasking was even well-known? Sounds like he was making a 'donkey' of himself! :-D

Recently, I was able to actually hear it played backwards. And despite knowing what to listen for, I could get absolutely no satanic message from it whatsoever. Or any message. Just a bunch of garbled nothingness. As it should be! :wink:

Well that's the beauty of free choice, if you don't like it you don't have to listen to it. Also I don't think your quote from Luke 16 fits, Christian music is not esteemed by men most non-Christians think its pretty dumb.

Its not a matter of liking it that concerns me. I just believe the message of praising the Lord in the song needs to clear and obvious for all to hear it like the Bible commands. And it should not be sung about the individual who may or may not be saved but about the Lord and His glory.

So when we get to heaven, does that mean God wants us to lie on the ground forever, sorrowful that Jesus paid such a heavy price for us? True, we should hold that in reverence and awe, but that was not the end of the story. Jesus lives now! Jesus created music, all kinds of it! And the Bible says the angels celebrate when someone accepts Jesus. God created celebration!! So we shouldn't be so concerned with sadness over Jesus' suffering, although that was very real and very horrible, but be enthralled that He lives again!!!! Praise God!!

If it takes jumping up and down and singing at the top of my lungs to show God how grateful and ecstatic I am over His gift to us, then so be it!

Since WHEN??? Anyone can go to this site: christianrocklyrics.com and choose any one of those artists, which I will say are even heavier rock type of Christian bands, and click on their songs to read the lyrics. 99% of them explicitly talk about Jesus and God!! I don't know what bands you're listening to, but I think you've got your facts wrong.

I'm not entirely convinced this is rational. It seems to me that our musical talents are a gift from God. The ability to play an instrument or to write music derives solely from Him and is His blessing upon our lives. Therefore music does not need to contain lyrics praising God in order to be pleasing to Him. When we use our God-given abilities to write music, this in and of itself is an act of worship. It is unimportant for the music to contain lyrics that praise God because the music itself is praising God. If a man were to write a love song to a woman, is that man not reveling in the miraculous experience given to us by God known as love? Is it not therefore honouring to and worshipful of God, even if it is not even written about Him? Even if the authour is not a Christian, is the love he experiences not still a blessing from God? A blessing that is not revealed in it's fullness, perhaps, but a blessing nonetheless?

Now, if the lyrics are dishonouring to God, then this is a different story. Music can be used in a way that is offensive to God, this is true. But so can prayer. So can Scripture. Both of these are just as easily manipulated by Satan as music, yet I don't see anyone proposing we throw those out the window.

That article made me laugh... a lot. I happen to like metal, like iron maiden and metallica, i dont feel the need to kill myself or do anything violent, listening to their music makes me feel good, brightens my day, and puts a spring in my step, and most importantly doesn't make me feel seperated from god in any way.
