Religions are complicated and confusing, but the "Historical Gospel of Jesus Christ" is so simple that even a small child can understand it.
All religions have evolved from Judaism. Judaism is a religion of law. There are hundreds and hundreds of laws, rules and instructions in the Mosiac law that effect every facet of one's life. All religions have been influenced by Judaism. I have always said that Judaism is the father of all religions and Catholicism is the mother of it.
Religions like Calvinism are very difficult to understand. They apparently believe that God has created a race of mindless robots that cannot think for themselves. Some of these mindless robots have been predestinated to hell, while others have been predestinated to eternal life. For what reason no one seems to know.
Catholicism is so difficult to understand that you have to go to a class to understand it called Catechisms. After you graduate from Catechism you become a bonafide Catholic. Catholicism is the religion of you must, you must, you must and if you don't you are anathema (kicked out of the Catholic church) This is why you don't hear many Catholics complaining about the Catholic church.
Paul wrote to the Corinthians, "But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtility, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ" 2 Corinthians 11:3.
I would say that 90% of the discussions on Christian Forums is about religion. People love their religion because their religion is about them. Their works, their obedience, their piety, me, me, me. The Gospel of Jesus Christ is not about us. The Historical Gospel of Jesus Christ is about Christ, his works, his obedience, his piety.
In the Gospel Jesus clothes himself in human flesh and becomes one with us, but not one of us. His mission is to save the world, John 3:17. He is God's new Adam and our new humanity. By his righteous, sinless life he fulfills all of the demands of God's Holy Law, Matthew 5:18. He does this in our name and on our behalf, as our savior, just like we did it ourselves.
That was not enough. Something had to be done about our sins and the sins of the whole world, 1 John 2:2. God requires a perfect sacrifice for our sins and the sins of the whole world. "He who knew no sin became sin for us" 2 Corinthians 5:21. The law has been fulfilled and abolished, Colossians 2:14. All sin has been atoned for. We are complete "In Christ" Colossians 2:10.
Here is the simplicity of the Gospel. All that Jesus is and all that Jesus did, was for our justification and our salvation. When God accepted Jesus back into heaven, we were accepted in him, Colossians 3:3-4. Jesus has victoriously defeated sin, death and the devil in our name and on our behalf. We are complete in him. God now sees his people as perfect and complete "In Christ". No laws, rules or religion needed.
