I'm not denying that scripture is necessary. But the above does NOT say it is all that is necessary.

Necessary for what, though? Paul is very clear that it is sufficient to thoroughly equip the man of God for every good work, by doctrine, reproof, correction and instruction in righteousness making him complete in his service to God. Scripture won't help him bake a cake or perform brain but for these other, spiritual things it is entirely sufficient.

When Paul refers to scripture in this text he is referring to the Old Testament scripture.

And his own writing which he understood was regarded by the apostles (and so, the Early Church) as Scripture, too.

2 Peter 3:15-16 (NASB)
15 and regard the patience of our Lord as salvation; just as also our beloved brother Paul, according to the wisdom given him, wrote to you,
16 as also in all his letters, speaking in them of these things, in which are some things hard to understand, which the untaught and unstable distort, as they do also the rest of the Scriptures, to their own destruction.


That was not all that Timothy needed. He also needed Paul's teaching.
But Paul's teaching about Christ was not enough. Timothy also needed the OT scriptures to be fully equipped.

See above. By "all Scripture given by inspiration of God" Paul meant OT Scripture and his own writing, issued as an apostle, that was received by his fellow apostles and the Early Church as Scripture.

Paul writes to the Thessalonians:
So then, brethren, stand firm and hold to the traditions which you were taught by us, either by word of mouth or by letter. (2Thess 2:15)

Luke 1:1-4
Inasmuch as many have undertaken to compile a narrative of the things which have been accomplished among us, just as they were delivered to us by those who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and ministers of the word, it seemed good to me also, having followed all things closely for some time past, to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus, that you may know the truth concerning the things of which you have been informed.

Luke taught Theophilus orally. Then later he wrote it down.
Where do you get that from? Where does Luke say, "since we have TALKED about his and I TAUGHT you these things.." It actually says that MANY have undertaken to compile a narrative of the things which have been accomplished" not compile a narrative of the things taught orally. The Jews were always a people of the book, not a people of oral tradition. You know, one is informed by reading. Are you assuming "informed" is restricted to being orally taught? Paul, Paul and John wrote letters instructing people. Letters. Christianity was always a faith communicated by writing. The Ethiopian was READING Isaiah and after a short explanation from Philipp, he was left with reading only.
And where did Luke get it from?
He traveled with Paul. Of course they taught. But it was not handed down through an oral tradition. Even the Catholic Monks in the middle ages copied and copied the scriptures. They did not go around teaching and teaching.

Where do you see this? The Jews and Christians were always people of the book or books and never a faith that relied on a man or men. Never. There is no one man in the New Testament church who was viewed as having thee authority but always what was taught by anyone, including Peter, to be checked against the written material. The Bereans were called more noble because they checked out what the apostle taught against scripture. That is how a prophet could rebuke a king, how Paul could rebuke Peter and so on and be right. No man was ever thee final authority in the New Testament church as they all had the Holy Spirit to teach them and correct them. You will notice that Jesus appointed 12, not 1, to have leadership in his church. Twelve, not one. And they had to submit to Scripture.
 
WHEAT & WEEDS PART 1

The illustration of the wheat and weeds was used by Jesus Christ to portray certain developments that would occur in the work he had started on earth. That sowing work was meant to produce the required crop of true Christians to be associated with him in the heavenly government known as “the kingdom of the heavens.” So he foretold that his good sowing would be infringed upon by the enemy Satan the Devil. The field (world) would produce not only the desired harvest of wheatlike, true Christians but also a crop of weedlike counterfeit Christians. Both would be allowed to grow together until harvesttime, (end of world or Jesus second presence) when the separating work would take place. Moreover, this separating work would be a further feature of the “last days,” the “conclusion of a system of things.” (Matthew 13:24-30, 36-43; compare Matthew 24:3; 2 Timothy3:1)
Jesus introduced this parable to his disciples and to a great throng of curious people, saying: “The kingdom of the heavens has become like a man that sowed fine seed in his field. While men were sleeping, his enemy came and oversowed weeds in among the wheat, and left. When the blade sprouted and produced fruit, then the weeds appeared also.” (Matthew 13:24-26)

A quick look through the other kingdom illustrations in Matthew chapter 13 helps us to realize that the expression “the kingdom of the heavens” as used in these illustrations cannot refer to the completed Messianic government or kingdom in the heavens. Can one imagine “weeds,” leavenlike “badness” (Matthew 13:33; 1 Corinthians 5:8) or people likened to wicked, unsuitable “fish” (Matthew 13:47-50) being associated with Christ in his heavenly kingdom? Hardly! These illustrations must, are referring to good and bad developments with respect to the choosing of Christ’s future associates in “the kingdom of the heavens.” In particular, the parable of the wheat and the weeds illustrates a condition among those on earth who claim to be called to reign with Christ in his kingdom. This situation would be permitted for a time, before being brought to an end at the symbolic “harvest.”

Jesus himself later explained the symbolic meaning of the “householder,” or the “man that sowed,” “his field,” the “fine seed,” “his enemy” and the “weeds.” The account reads: “After dismissing the crowds he went into the house. And his disciples came to him and said: ‘Explain to us the illustration of the weeds in the field.’ In response he said: ‘The sower of the fine seed is the Son of man; the field is the world; as for the fine seed, these are the sons of the kingdom; but the weeds are the sons of the wicked one, and the enemy that sowed them is the Devil.’”—(Matthew13:36-39)

Jesus identified himself as the “Son of man.” (Matthew 8:20; 25:31; 26:64) Interestingly, it was in connection with the Kingdom that Jesus was prophetically called the “son of man” in a vision received by Daniel. That prophecy states: “To him [the “son of man”] there were given rulership and dignity and kingdom, that the peoples, national groups and languages should all serve even him. His rulership is an indefinitely lasting rulership that will not pass away, and his kingdom one that will not be brought to ruin.” Showing that the Son of man would have associates ruling with him, the prophetic vision also says: “And the kingdom and the rulership and the grandeur of the kingdoms under all the heavens were given to the people who are the holy ones of the Supreme One. Their kingdom is an indefinitely lasting kingdom, and all the rulerships will serve and obey even them.” (Daniel 7:13, 14, 27).
 
WEEDS & WHEAT PART 2
It is with a view to gathering out of the world the required number of such “holy ones,” or “sons of the kingdom,” that Jesus, the “householder” of the parable, sows “fine seed in his field.” This “field” is explained as being “the world [Greek, koʹsmos],” the world of mankind. From the time of Jesus’ earthly ministry onward, mankind became a “field under cultivation,” a religious field of opportunity for sowing and cultivating the “fine seed,” or “sons of the kingdom.” (Corinthians 3:9) Jesus zealously prepared the Jewish part of the “field” during the three and a half years of his earthly ministry. (Matthew 9:35-38) Then, from Pentecost 33 C.E. onward, he planted “fine seed,” first among Jews, and finally in the entire world, or “field.”(Acts 1:8)

Explaining the “fine seed,” Jesus said: “These are the sons of the kingdom.” The first of these spirit-begotten, anointed “sons of the kingdom” were Jesus’ faithful apostles and the hundred or so other disciples, both men and women, who received the gift of the holy spirit at Pentecost 33 C.E. in Jerusalem. (Acts 1:13-15; 2:1-4) That same day, about 3,000 others, both Jews and proselytes, were added to the newly founded Christian congregation. (Acts 2:5-11, 41) YHWH God blessed this sowing work and “continued to join to them daily those being saved,” so that soon “the number of the men [possibly not counting the women] became about five thousand.” A little later, the account adds: “Believers in the Lord kept on being added, multitudes both of men and of women.” (Acts 2:47; 4:4; 5:14) The sowing work was moving ahead rapidly among the Jews and the proselytes.

After having arranged for seeds to be sown among the Samaritans (Acts, chapter 8), the Sower Jesus, by means of the holy spirit, extended the sowing work to the uncircumcised non-Jews or Gentiles. (Acts chapter 10; Acts 13:1-5, 46, 47) Within a few decades Christian congregations were established from North Africa to the Black Sea and from Babylonia to Italy, if not even farther west. (Acts 2:5-11; 1 Peter 5:13; Romans 15:24; Colossians 1:5, 6, 23)

But there was mischief afoot. Jesus’ parable had warned: “While men were sleeping, his [the Sower’s] enemy came and oversowed weeds in among the wheat, and left. When the blade sprouted and produced fruit, then the weeds appeared also.” (Matthew 13:25, 26) Jesus identified “his enemy” as being “the Devil,” who would do his sabotaging work “while men were sleeping.” In the Bible “sleep” can symbolize death or spiritual drowsiness. (Matthew 9:24; Romans 13:11; 1 Thessalonians 5:6) After having spoken of ‘finishing his course,’ Paul told the elders from the Christian congregation in Ephesus: “I know that after my going away oppressive wolves will enter in among you and will not treat the flock with tenderness, and from among you yourselves men will rise and speak twisted things to draw away the disciples after themselves. Therefore keep awake.” (Acts 20:24-31)

Historical facts show that it was “while men were sleeping” that Satan “came and oversowed weeds in among the wheat.” Once the apostles, who collectively ‘acted as a restraint’ upon apostasy, began falling asleep in death, many Christian elders failed to “keep awake.” (2 Thessalonians 2:3, 6-8)

Becoming spiritually drowsy, they did not protect the “sons of the kingdom” from the “oppressive wolves” that began entering in among them. These were “weeds” sown among the “fine seed.” Referring to the approaching end of the apostolic period, John, the last of the apostles to die, wrote: “It is the last hour, and, just as you have heard that antichrist is coming, even now there have come to be many antichrists; from which fact we gain the knowledge that it is the last hour. They went out from us, but they were not of our sort; for if they had been of our sort, they would have remained with us. But they went out that it might be shown up that not all are of our sort.” (1 John 2:18, 19)

Jesus stated: “The weeds are the sons of the wicked one.” (Matthew 13:38) In his book Natural History of the Bible, H. B. Tristram comments on the type of weeds referred to in this parable. He writes: “The Tares (zizania) are the same as the Arabic zawan, from which the Greek name is derived, the Lolium Temulentum or Bearded Darnel . . . . It is a kind of ryegrass, and is the only species of the grass family the seeds of which are poisonous. The derivation of zawân is from zân, ‘vomiting,’ the effect of eating darnel being to produce violent nausea convulsions, and diarrhera, which frequently ends in death. The plant, having a broader leaf than most wild grasses, is entirely like wheat until the ear appears.”

It should be noted that the “weeds” are not, as some Jewish Talmudists and others once believed, a degenerate form of wheat. Wheat seed never transforms itself into weeds. This would be contrary to YHWH God immutable law: “Let the earth cause grass to shoot forth, vegetation bearing seed, fruit trees yielding fruit according to their kinds.” (Genesis 1:11, 12) This scientific fact exonerates the “Son of man,” Christ Jesus, the “sower of the fine seed,” from any responsibility for what happened in “his field.” The “fine seed” he sowed would never have become a crop of weeds. It could only produce “wheat,” or true “sons of the kingdom.” What later developed in his “field” was the direct result of his enemy’s deliberate and malicious oversowing of “weeds,” or “sons of the wicked one.”

So, Jesus’ illustration of the “wheat” and the “weeds” does much to explain the history of Christianity throughout the centuries. Historical facts show that after the death of the apostles Satan introduced among the congregations of true Christians many “weeds,” “oppressive wolves” and “antichrists,” just as Jesus, Paul, Peter, John and Jude had foretold. (Acts 20:29; 2 Peter 2:1-3; 1 John 2:18) It has been just as Jesus stated: “When the blade sprouted and produced fruit, then the weeds appeared also.”(Matthew 13:26)

These “weeds” became particularly apparent during the second and third centuries, at which time such unscriptural doctrines as the inherent immortality of the soul, hellfire and the Trinity began to be taught by so-called church fathers. Many of these men were more philosophers than true Christian overseers faithful to the teachings of the Bible. The climax came early in the fourth century, when pagan Emperor Constantine fused this apostate Christianity with the pagan religion of Rome. Such counterfeit Christianity, in its Roman Catholic, Russian Orthodox, Greek Orthodox and Protestant varieties, has produced a bumper crop of “weeds” not only throughout the centuries but also right up until the present time.

This situation could not fail to disturb the ‘Son of man’s’ “slaves.” Jesus’ parable continues: “So the slaves of the householder came up and said to him, ‘Master, did you not sow fine seed in your field? How, then, does it come to have weeds?’ He said to them, ‘An enemy, a man, did this.’ They said to him, ‘Do you want us, then, to go out and collect them?’ He said, ‘No; that by no chance, while collecting the weeds, you uproot the wheat with them. Let both grow together until the harvest; and in the harvest season I will tell the reapers, First collect the weeds and bind them in bundles to burn them up, then go to gathering the wheat into my storehouse.’”(Matthew 13:27-30)

Whether these worried “slaves” (Matthew 13:27) are identical with the “reapers” (Matthew 13:30) Jesus does not explain. If they are, this would mean that the angels were distressed by the abundant growth of “weeds” in their Master’s field. (Matthew 13:39) These “slaves” asked if they should immediately weed out the bearded darnel, symbolizing the “sons of the wicked one.” (Matthew 13:38) They feared that these counterfeit Christians, or “weeds,” maliciously sown by the “enemy,” the Devil, might choke the true “wheat,” the authentic “sons of the kingdom

But the “householder,” the “Son of man,” did not authorize his “slaves” to go out and collect the “weeds,” or pseudo-Christians, separating them from the “wheat,” true Christians. He said: “Let both grow together until the harvest.” And so it has been that true and false Christianity have grown together in the “field,” or “world,” of mankind. About the year 100 “the weeds appeared.” About the year 300, there were more “weeds” than there were wheat.
There have always been people who were “the wheat,” that is, true Christians. Jesus said to his disciples: “I am with you all the days until the conclusion of the system of things.” (Matthew 28:20) So Jesus would protect the anointed Christians all the days up to the time of the end. But since the weeds, or false Christians, had overgrown the wheat, we do not know for certain who were part of the wheat class during all those years.

The problem is identifying what you think are the "weeds." The epistles identify "weeds" or false teaching in the church as those who proposed the Resurrection is already past (and they missed it) which DOES have an impact on one's daily following Jesus or the teaching that Jesus did not really come in a body which also HAS an impact on one's daily following Jesus. The other problem in your "weeds" is that if the soul is not immoral, then there is no judgement and no justice and one can live as sinful and selfish as one wants to. Same with hell. No hell means be as evil as you want, there is no punishment. These "weeds" are actually what motivates some people to do right.
 
That is not true.
Since they had copies everywhere it is proof. What you are assuming is that only when men in power SAY “it is scripture” then it is. This isn’t how they thought.

Men in power in the organization disputed. Those who read and copied and lived the contents didn’t.
 
The gospel was passed on orally. Yes, much of Christ's teaching was written down eventually.
It was written down quite soon as the original eye witness wrote it down. That is soon, not eventually.
But consider this:
You then, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus, 2 and what you have heard from me before many witnesses entrust to faithful men who will be able to teach others also. (2Tim 2:1-2)
So we have Paul teaching Timothy - Timothy teaching faithful men - faithful men teaching others.
That’s the end of the line. Before Paul died, he wrote more of the New Testament than anyone. The oral teaching was second place for obvious reasons as it dies with the teacher.


Of course they taught. Universities today have oral passing on of information but no one thinks it’s therefore mainly oral. It’s actually called “book learning” not “oral education” even though there are lectures.

Scripture says the “Holy Spirit will instruct you” not “listen to the men in charge.”
Jesus set up a Church, founded on the apostles to pass on all that he had taught them.
And the Holy spirit taught and still does. Again, never ever one man in authority whose teaching equals scripture. The apostles passed on what they were also actively learning. Paul, btw, didn’t participate in the 12 following Jesus. How did he get his teaching? Jesus was already gone.
Moreover it was the apostles (and their successors) that Jesus promised the Holy Spirit would guide into all truth not everyone. (John 14:26).
Ah, so you admit the Holy Spirit is teaching. Why did the Holy Spirit fill all the believers at Pentecost and not just the apostles?

Jesus said: “The harvest is a conclusion of a system of things.” (Matthew 13:39) That time of the harvest began in 1914. There are five events that Jesus said would happen during the time of the harvest.

The first was, collecting the weeds, Jesus said: “In the harvest season I will tell the reapers, First collect the weeds and bind them in bundles.” After 1914, the angels began to “collect” the weeds, or false Christians, by separating them from the anointed “sons of the kingdom.”(Matthew 13:30, 38, 41)
As the collecting work progressed, it became easier to see the difference between the wheat and the weeds. (Revelation 18:1, 4) By 1919, it was clear that Babylon the Great had fallen. But what especially made true Christians different from false Christians was the preaching work. Those who took the lead among the Bible Students began to make clear that all in the congregation must preach about the Kingdom. A booklet called, To Whom the Work Is Entrusted, was published in 1919. It urged all anointed Christians to preach from house to house. It explained that even though it seemed impossible to do all that work, the Lord would give his people the strength to do it. Then the booklet said: “You have the privilege of sharing in it.” The Watch Tower in 1922 said that they put more effort than ever into their preaching. It soon became the work that those faithful Christians came to be known for, and it still is.

The second event Jesus said would happen is gathering the wheat. Jesus commands his angels to start gathering the wheat into his storehouse. (Matthew 13:30) Since 1919, anointed ones have been gathered into the cleansed Christian congregation. What about those anointed Christians who are alive at the end of this system of things? Their final gathering will happen when they go to heaven.(Daniel 7:18, 22, 27)

The third event is, weeping and gnashing. After the angels bundle the weeds, what happens? Speaking about the condition of “the weeds,” Jesus says: “There is where their weeping and the gnashing of their teeth will be.” (Matthew 13:42) But that isn't happening right now. Christendom is part of the harlot described in Revelation chapter 18. Even today, Christendom says about herself: “I sit a queen, and I am no widow, and I shall never see mourning.” (Revelation 18:7) She still feels she is in control and even tries to be “a queen” with power over political leaders. So false Christians represented by the weeds are still boasting today. They have not started to weep. But that will soon change.

After false religion is destroyed(Christendom), the ones who used to follow those religions will run for cover. But they will not be able to find a safe place to hide. (Luke 23:30; Revelation 6:15-17) When they realize that they cannot escape, it is then they will weep over their situation and will gnash, or grind, their teeth because they are so angry. As Jesus’ prophecy about the great tribulation shows, they will at that time “beat themselves in lamentation.”(Matthew 24:30; Revelation 1:7)

The fourth, event is, pitched into the furnace. What will happen to the bundles of weeds? The angels “will pitch them into the fiery furnace.” (Matthew 13:42) This means that they will be completely destroyed. So the ones who belonged to those organizations teaching false religion will be destroyed during the final part of the great tribulation, Armageddon.(Malachi 4:1)

The fifth event is, shining brightly. Jesus ends his prophecy by saying: “At that time the righteous ones will shine as brightly as the sun in the kingdom of their Father.” (Matthew 13:43) When and where will they shine brightly? This part of the prophecy will be fulfilled in the future. And it will be fulfilled in heaven, not on earth. There are two reasons for understanding the prophecy this way.

First, when will this happen? Jesus said: “At that time the righteous ones will shine.” Evidently, the expression “at that time” is connected to the event Jesus had just described, that is, the time when the weeds are ‘pitched into the fiery furnace.’ That happens during the final part of the great tribulation. So the anointed must “shine as brightly as the sun” at that future time as well. Second, where will this happen? Jesus said that the righteous ones will shine
in the kingdom." What does that mean? All faithful anointed ones who are still on earth after the first part of the great tribulation has passed will already have received their final sealing. Then they will be gathered to heaven, as Jesus foretold. (Matthew 24:31) It is there they will shine "in the kingdom of their Father." They will be part of Jesus’ joyous bride in “the marriage of the Lamb.” This happens soon after the battle of Armageddon.—Revelation 19:6-9.

The problem is identifying what you think are the "weeds." The epistles identify "weeds" or false teaching in the church as those who proposed the Resurrection is already past (and they missed it) which DOES have an impact on one's daily following Jesus or the teaching that Jesus did not really come in a body which also HAS an impact on one's daily following Jesus. First of all, I didn't say the, "soul is not immoral." I said it isn't immortal. In other words we human beings who are souls, are not immortal souls. We are mortal, we can and do die.
Second of all while I agree that the weeds were teaching a false teaching that the resurrection had already past, there were other false teachings that they were teaching too. The apostle John said there were many anti-Christ's in the congregation when he had gotten old. (1 John 2:18, 19)
At 1 John 2:22 the apostle John said that those who deny that Jesus is the Christ are those that are denying the Father and the son and this is the anti-christ. At 1 John 4:3 John was inspired to say every inspired expression that doesn't confess Jesus doesn't originate with God. This is the anti-Christ's inspired expression which you heard was coming, and now it is already in the world.
The apostle John was inspired to write at 2 John 7 many receivers have gone out into the world, persons not confessing Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh. This is the deceiver and the anti-christ. So the Bible speaking of individuals who take such actions being anti-christ's, the Bible also refers to them collectively as "the antichrist." So it's those individuals or religious establishments who teach that Jesus isn't the Christ, and who deny that Jesus is the son of God who came in the flesh. 1 John 4:2, 3; John 8:42, 48, 49.

Denial of Jesus as the Christ and as the Son of God of necessity embraces the denial of any or all of the Scriptural teachings concerning him: his origin, his place in God’s arrangement, his fulfillment of the prophecies in the Hebrew Scriptures as the promised Messiah, his ministry and teachings and prophecies, as well as any opposition to or efforts to replace him in his position as God’s appointed High Priest and King. This is evident from other texts, which, while not using the term “antichrist,” express essentially the same idea. Thus, Jesus stated: “He that is not on my side is against me, and he that does not gather with me scatters.” (Lu 11:23) Second John 7 shows that such ones might act as deceivers, and hence the “antichrist” would include those who are “false Christs” and “false prophets,” as well as those who perform powerful works in Jesus’ name and yet are classed by him as “workers of lawlessness.”—Mt 24:24; 7:15, 22, 23.
All this thst the scriptures are speaking here is talking about the things Satan will be doing with the weeds he sowed into the field of mankind to deceive mankind into following an untruth, a deception. So the weeds are not just those who deny the resurrection.

I have shown you that it is necessary but not solely sufficient.
If you are going to ignore that there is no point in continuing.

Where do you get that from? Where does Luke say, "since we have TALKED about his and I TAUGHT you these things.." It actually says that MANY have undertaken to compile a narrative of the things which have been accomplished" not compile a narrative of the things taught orally. The Jews were always a people of the book, not a people of oral tradition. You know, one is informed by reading. Are you assuming "informed" is restricted to being orally taught? Paul, Paul and John wrote letters instructing people. Letters. Christianity was always a faith communicated by writing. The Ethiopian was READING Isaiah and after a short explanation from Philipp, he was left with reading only.

I think your point, Mungo, is that simply reading the Bible is not sufficient and that is true. The passage recited ASSUMES the reader is ALREADY in the faith. It is not promising scriptures are sufficient alone. The Bible repeatedly tells us that reading scriptures without anything else is not sufficient.

If it were not so, it would have been kept and given the authority in the lives of believers it did. The canon was done by authorities to acknowledge what was already accepted as canon. How do they deal with Deut 32:26 that clearly says Moses wrote the law at least and kept the books in the ark. How do they deal with the undeniable fact that the prophets WROTE out their messages and did not merely use oral communication? This indicates a people of books, not oral tradition, starting with Moses. When Moses was to be sent and asked how to answer who sent him, he was given extremely scant information…”the God of Abe, et al. That’s it. If it was all oral, wouldn’t they have known more?

.There is no one man in the New Testament church who was viewed as having thee authority but always what was taught by anyone, including Peter, to be checked against the written material. The Bereans were called more noble because they checked out what the apostle taught against scripture. That is how a prophet could rebuke a king, how Paul could rebuke Peter and so on and be right. No man was ever thee final authority in the New Testament church as they all had the Holy Spirit to teach them and correct them. You will notice that Jesus appointed 12, not 1, to have leadership in his church. Twelve, not one. And they had to submit to Scripture.

The Bereans were not more noble because they were sola scriptura.
It was the Thessalonian Jews who were sola scriptura.
They rejected Paul's teaching because they considered it did not line up with scripture (OT). They rejected it as the word of God.

The Bereans on the other hand did accept Paul's new oral teaching. They "received the word with all eagerness."
Of course they checked out the scriptures that Paul referred to.

Paul selected 12 apostles but one of them, Peter, he appointed leader.

According to Dave Armstrong (LINK) 2Peter was not considered canonical or even cited between 30-16 AD.
It was disputed between 160-250.
Still disputed between 250-325
The Council of Nicea (325) questioned the canonicity of 2 Peter
it was finally accepted near the end of the 4th century.

The acceptance of what we consider canonical was not as early or as simple as you make out.

They used both written AND oral tradition.
That is a FACT.
There isn’t a belief system in the history of the world that only uses written material. Most have none but are oral. Judaism and Christianity are not among these.
