Tobacco

This sounds like an anti-smoking thread.
That is judgment.
I will never promote the use of tobacco.
However, I will take the other side here.
Drinking soda is slow suicide.
Eating too much food, food with preservatives, and food with additives is slow suicide.
Driving beyond the speed limit is slow suicide.
And I could go on.

What is the purpose of this thread?

Good advice, but then allenwynne makes a good point, too. I wonder if in the future sipping sodas will be viewed with the same disdain as smoking is now. I love me some Dr Pepper and if it's available I usually have some.:confusedWhich is why I don't have packs of soda sitting around in the kitchen all the time.

It's a matter of moderation. Almost anything good, including exercise, can kill you if you take it to extremes.

Smoking build an addiction quickly. Some people are hooked after only one smoke. If people smoke in moderation they are walking on thin ice.

I don't think people get addicted to cigars or pipes. I know it wasn't a struggle giving them up. I just stopped. No withdrawal symptoms, no cravings. I think it's the way cigarettes are inhaled that does the addiction. One of my sons started smoking cigarettes when he was in college, and it took him a long time to get clear of it.

Some people do. I smoke a pipe on occasion, but maybe once or twice every few months. I am certainly not addicted, but I know people who do it 2-5 times per DAY. They may not be addicted to the Tobacco itself, but they may be addicted to the experience or relaxation that it provides.

Moderation is a good answer. A lot of things can be okay as long as you practice moderation. Too much of almost anything can kill you.

Yep. I knew an actuary who told me that pipe smokers tend to live longer than non-smokers. I pointed out that lip cancer was more prevalent among piper smokers. He agreed, but said that pipe smokers had fewer heart attacks and strokes, and that more than compensated for the cancer risk. He also thought that a pipe smoker slows down and relaxes, and that accounted for the difference. I can remember the enjoyment of blowing smoke rings. So I figured that there might be other things that could give you the same relaxation without the toxins.

There are. I took up tinkering with gadgets, and it gave me the same relaxed state as pipe smoking did.

I am moving this thread to the Lounge where it will be better served.

So much depends on a person's physiological and psychological make up. Some people become easily addicted and find it nearly impossible to quit. Others never form a real addition. I smoked a pack and a half a day for five years when I was in the navy. When I met the woman I love and eventually married, she didn't want me to smoke, so I quite cold turkey. That was 40 years ago, and it has never seemed difficult for me.

On the other thread, it was said by someone about liking the idea of trying something alcoholic.

Well, anyway, as regards smoking, my advice would be: Don't even try it! (You can easily get hooked!) Best to stay off it completely and not even try.

(Two cents'.)

Blessings.

I second that. I am a smoker who has been struggling for YEARS to quit. If I had a DeLorean, I'd go back in time to my 19 year-old self and punch him in the face until he put that first one down. I have several friends who have mentioned from time to time wondering what smoking is like. I've told them flat out, "If I ever see your hand with a cigarette in it, I'm going to rip it off and beat you with it."

It is undoubtedly the stupidest thing I've ever done.

I am allergic to smoking. But others tell me otherwise. As really my eyes get watery and my sinuses go up. Have an uncle who has smoked since he was a kid. And an aunt as well. Sad but true! Wished that they would stop!

You've not smoked yourself, I guess?

Quitting was just about the best thing I did.
