HI stoveboltsIf somebody is not being financially responsible when it comes to their retirement, then why should the minority of us who are trying to be responsible give our hard earned and saved cash to those who didn’t.
Because there is a vast majority of those who don't think they can trust themselves to save for their retirement. Because, it's how governments are expected to care for their citizens according to all the evidence of all the nations on the face of the earth. Because not everyone gets a chance to save enough to see them through 10-20 years of a retired life.
Listen, what governments do changes over time. Sure, 200 years ago everybody worked until they died or had to live with some other friend or family member if they weren't able to work. No nations paid out anything in the way of monies to maintain some reasonable lifestyle. But that's changed! 200 years ago we didn't have to fund building multi-lane highways that stretched across the nation. Today that's changed! 200 years ago our military spending was like a few thousand dollars and was a pittance of total government spending. Today that's changed!!!
So, I'm all for 'conservative' values, but I don't equate that to returning to living in a cave with a club that I use to beat my girlfriend. For me, 'conservative' means older Scriptural rules and practices. But the Scriptures don't address the issue of what national governments are supposed to do for us. It does say that we should be obedient to and that they should work for the people. Now, let's stop right there. 'For the people', shouldn't be translated as 'the way I want things to be'.
According to AARP.org, over 90% of all registered voters approve of the Social Security program.
According to a 2019 poll reported on kff..org 75% of Americans approve of the Medicaid system.
So, understand that when we say that a government representative should speak 'for the people', it should be understsood that even their constituency has disagreement, but there is a majority opinion or understanding. The observance of that truth is what is really understood when one says, 'for the people'.
God bless,
Ted
