Virtual PC's

Anyone out there playing with VMware?

I've finally got ESXi 5 installed after VMware Workstation 8 and was able to port my virtual machines from WS8 to ESXi 5.

I've also got VMsphere loaded, but I don't see any value yet since you get about the same interface with WS8 when you connect to the ESXi server.

So far I'm able to RDP from an HP Thin Client into my virtual pc, but it's ugly lol.

I would really like to pick somebodies head knowledge in this area.

Woot woot! :waving Guess what I'm posting from :)

Ok, so here is my setup.

Computer 1: Server 2008 with VMware Worstation and VMSphere.
Computer 2: ESXi 5 (VMware) server
Thin Client: HP t5335z zero Client.

Basically I created my workstation (Windows 7) in Worgstation and then uploaded them to the ESXi 5 server and then connected to the Virtual Computer with the zero client.

Woot woot! Finally!!! :thumbsup

Next I'm going to load Ubuntu as an OS image and deploy that to my Virtual Network and just have fun! Nice thing is, if I mess up, it's easy to start over because everything that gets moved to the Esxi server is basically a clone from my master image from VM Workstation.

My only real experience in using this stuff has been a HP thin client in my school's library.

I do see this, and cloud computing to be a large part in computing in the future.

Any word on Chrome OS?

I'm not keeping track of chrome, but I am with windows 8. It feels like it belongs on a tablet, and when you look at server 8 with its enhanced rdp its cloud ready! I honestly don't see a desktop in the corporate world much longer...

From what I've sen of win8, I agree. The next 5 years or so will be very interesting indeed. :yes

And Becky, I never speak American English! Only good and proper Australian English, mate. :lol

Ha ha Becky! Hey, did you know that I.T. jobs are coming back to the states? Well, when you consider they only start out at 10 bucks an hour now.... :grumpy

Nick,
I'm still on my Virtual PC, but I'm using my Virtual Workstation connection to the ESXi 5 server because that gives me a high resolution screen.

Current Microsoft RDP (Remote Desktop Protocol) is the only connection I can establish with my HP Zero Client and you know how ugly RDP is with it's sever graphical limitations... So in Server 8, Microsoft is releasing RDSH which will support a high definition.

But until then, I'm stuck with RDP. Hopefully today I'll be able to figure out how to connect with my zero client with a VMWare client... a whole new world for me to explore.. If I can get that going then I'll have a usuable Virtual PC ;)

Well, I havn't done any research on a better client for the zero client...

But I am now posting from Ubuntu 11 ;)

You know, having virtual computers are pretty awesome. And think, if you make a master image and then spawn instances of them for different people in your family... then if somebody gets hit with spyware etc, you just respawn them a new image and nobody else is effected.

I'm liking this so far ;)

Ohh, but you've got to have a pretty big computer to host multiple virtual pc's. I'm running Dual Quad core's with 16 Gig of ram and I can run three virtual pc's without any lag or issues. I tried running two virtual machines off a single quad core with 4 gig of ram and it killed the hardware, so I think the dual quad cores and the additional ram is definitely needed.

That wasn't the response I thought you'd give to Nick. I was ducking behind furniture when I saw him mention the "cloud".

I thought you'd let him have it: THAT CLOUD MIGHT BE RUNNING ME OUT OF MY JOB!!!

Ha ha! I'm not UAW :toofunny

Actually, this all kind of hit me off guard and now I'm trying to play catch up. I cut my teeth on Dos 6.22 and Windows 3.11 and went right into client server architecture. Dumb terminals were going out, and pc's were coming in to fill the processing void mainframes couldn't support.

We all knew it would come back to dumb terminals, but I'm not so sure I'd call a zero client dumb since they have more processing power and tons more ram than my first 486.

So, yeah, the current role I support is going away, and if I don't advance, then I'll go away too. Fortunately, I enjoy I.T. and to be honest, it feels good to be excited about I.T. again!

resistance is futile! your teen on that dumb terminal has been assimilated. all will serve the collective pepsi net.

all will drink and enjoy pepsico products.

I began with the VIC 20 and Iḿ also running Ubuntu 11.10 on a Triple Core AMD 2 2.3ghz and 8gb RAM. I can run 3 Virtuals without any lag in either of the four PCs but seldom run more than 1, the Windoze XP. With the VBox I have the Guest Additions installed and almost never open the access to the WWW and thus avoid contamination. I know, as the neighborhood IT that the VBox does great on all forms of Windoze but with the DOS hole still open and the new Root Kit installed in Win7 and forward by the NSA I have no desire to use them any longer.

And Reba, sorry for the Geek Speek! :eeeekkk

Hey Taylor,

Are you just running Oracle Virtual Box or are you hosting your VM's on a server somewhere? I'm still having some struggles with ESXi... VMware can be so frustrating.

So I load vSpehere, and it does me absolutely no use. So I find out I need view Agent... and it tells me I need Vinfastructure. Gad!

I think I need to buy a book... At least Citrix gives you free training. VMware wants to charge you!
