Bible Study WELCOME TO A DEEP LOOK AT GENESIS

Hey Chopper...yep got one today...same to you. My youngest son took me out for brunch and my daughter is supposed to be taking me out for dinner.
As far as Esau, I think guilt was a big factor in everything he did until he grew up and met his brother for the first time afterwards in Gen 33. By that time he had reconciled with himself, his brother, and God.

Ah yes. It's amazing what bitterness in a heart and mind can rattle up. For years, I was terribly upset at my mother growing up. As a result, I was always doing illegal things. Never got caught, came close a couple of times though. Bitterness is not good.

I'm really glad for you that your kids took you out today, Great! I'll be in Maine this coming week with my brother, fishing. I'll try and find a computer and post, but if not, I'll be in touch next week....take care.

For Monday...
Gen 28:10 And Jacob went out from Beersheba, and went toward Haran.
Gen 28:11 And he lighted upon a certain place, and tarried there all night, because the sun was set; and he took of the stones of that place, and put them for his pillows, and lay down in that place to sleep.
Gen 28:12 And he dreamed, and behold a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven: and behold the angels of God ascending and descending on it.
Gen 28:13 And, behold, the LORD stood above it, and said, I am the LORD God of Abraham thy father, and the God of Isaac: the land whereon thou liest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed;
Gen 28:14 And thy seed shall be as the dust of the earth, and thou shalt spread abroad to the west, and to the east, and to the north, and to the south: and in thee and in thy seed shall all the families of the earth be blessed.
Gen 28:15 And, behold, I am with thee, and will keep thee in all places whither thou goest, and will bring thee again into this land; for I will not leave thee, until I have done that which I have spoken to thee of.
Gen 28:16 And Jacob awaked out of his sleep, and he said, Surely the LORD is in this place; and I knew it not.
Gen 28:17 And he was afraid, and said, How dreadful is this place! this is none other but the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven.
Gen 28:18 And Jacob rose up early in the morning, and took the stone that he had put for his pillows, and set it up for a pillar, and poured oil upon the top of it.
Gen 28:19 And he called the name of that place Bethel: but the name of that city was called Luz at the first.
Gen 28:20 And Jacob vowed a vow, saying, If God will be with me, and will keep me in this way that I go, and will give me bread to eat, and raiment to put on,
Gen 28:21 So that I come again to my father's house in peace; then shall the LORD be my God:
Gen 28:22 And this stone, which I have set for a pillar, shall be God's house: and of all that thou shalt give me I will surely give the tenth unto thee.

Jacob's pillar stone has a very interesting coronation legend in the British empire. It would be cool if it is the actual stone.

I will be leaving for Maine this afternoon. So here is today's study....thank you Reba for taking over.

Day 60 Monday 6/16/14 Genesis 28:10-22 Jacob's Dream.

In looking at an early map from Beersheba to Haran is no hop, skip, and a jump. It is approximately 550 miles. I can't tell if he was on foot or camel. On the way, a setting sun forced our fleeing friend to stop for the night. First on the agenda is picking out a nice soft rock for a pillow :lol. He had traveled approximately 40 miles on foot and would have been very tired. A rock for a pillow probably didn't matter. I have seen explorers using rocks for pillows by putting something soft on them.

A dream takes place with a ladder extending from heaven to earth. This suggests some important happenings to me, the ladder between heaven and earth represents prayer going up, answers coming down....Angels going up and coming down represents Hebrews 1:14 "Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation?"

I really like what Jehovah told Jacob in V.15 "I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised....isn't that great? God promised Jacob the land in which he slept, would be his "offspring's" property.

Jacob was so taken with the dream and promise, that he knew he was standing on holy ground, even the "Gate of Heaven". Jacob took his rock pillow, poured anointing oil on it dedicating it for holy activities. To be anointed with oil means being separated for a particular holy use only! Jacob called the place Bethel (House of God) and makes a vow to Jehovah that if God blesses him, eventually Jacob would trust God totally, implying that he didn't trust Him that much right now.

I'm going to try and find a computer when I get to my brothers place in Maine. No guarantee. Even if I do, I'll just post a couple of observations. Reba is "the big cheese".

wow am i slow....

It's interesting to see this image of Angels coming up and down from Heaven when we think of how Jesus intercedes for us and how Angels are ministering spirits.

Heb 7:25 KJV Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them.

Heb 1:14 KJV Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation?

I get the impression of Jesus watching us and sending Angels to our aid when He sees fit. They must be incredibly busy.

Thank you Jesus.

Odd how many time one can read something and never 'see it' :missyou

Interesting considering the OSAS idea.

June 19, Gen 29, 1-8

Gen 29:1 Then Jacob went on his journey, and came into the land of the people of the east.
Gen 29:2 And he looked, and behold a well in the field, and, lo, there were three flocks of sheep lying by it; for out of that well they watered the flocks: and a great stone was upon the well's mouth.
Gen 29:3 And thither were all the flocks gathered: and they rolled the stone from the well's mouth, and watered the sheep, and put the stone again upon the well's mouth in his place.
Gen 29:4 And Jacob said unto them, My brethren, whence be ye? And they said, Of Haran are we.
Gen 29:5 And he said unto them, Know ye Laban the son of Nahor? And they said, We know him.
Gen 29:6 And he said unto them, Is he well? And they said, He is well: and, behold, Rachel his daughter cometh with the sheep.
Gen 29:7 And he said, Lo, it is yet high day, neither is it time that the cattle should be gathered together: water ye the sheep, and go and feed them.
Gen 29:8 And they said, We cannot, until all the flocks be gathered together, and till they roll the stone from the well's mouth; then we water the sheep.

Joh 4:10 Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water.
Joh 4:11 The woman saith unto him, Sir, thou hast nothing to draw with, and the well is deep: from whence then hast thou that living water.

Luk 24:2 And they found the stone rolled away from the sepulchre.

Gen 29:6-7 KJV And he said unto them, Is he well? And they said, He is well: and, behold, Rachel his daughter cometh with the sheep. (7) And he said hubba hubba

Ops :D

Ok ok

It seems Jacob only rolled the stone off the well because of Rachel. Is that right ?

Hello, I'm back. My brother's boat motor blew a seal that keeps water out of the lower transom so it won't be repaired until next week. I came home, and here I am. I'll check over what I missed and catch up. :wave

Day 65 Friday 6/20/14 Genesis 29:9-12 Go Tell Dad.

This portion opens with Jacob and the shepherds from Haran. Apparently it was customary in those parts not to release the well water until all the flocks were present. The only flock that was missing and being waited on was Rachel's flock.

I understand that a shepherdess is the high position in that occupation. Since Rachel was a young woman, her father would have some of his servants assigned to her for jobs that were not fit for a woman.

Jacob learns that the sheep that were coming belonged to Laban and most of all that the shepherdess was Rachel, the daughter of Laban. In a display of strength to impress Rachel, Jacob, by himself, removes the stone from the mouth of the well. The Targum of Jonathan & other Jewish writers say that the shepherds were highly impressed by Jacob's strength as it took all of them to remove the stone. He watered Rachel's flock as a kind gesture for Rachel and would impress Laban as well.

V.11 says that Jacob kissed Rachel, and one of the shepherds shouted, "Get a Room!" :oops (I did that for Agua) The kiss was a customary kiss for kinsmen, not one of romance. Jacob "wept aloud" for joy in reaching his destination and possibly his future wife. It may be that God somehow indicated to Jacob "that this is the one."

V.12 Has Rachel running to tell her father, "hey Rachel, you left your sheep!"

Hey! Thank you guys for keeping the study going. Especially Reba for taking charge. I enjoyed all the comments.

Tomorrow's Study: Day 66 Saturday 6/21/14 Genesis 29:13-20 A High Cost For Rachel.

Gen 29:9 And while he yet spake with them, Rachel came with her father's sheep: for she kept them.
Gen 29:10 And it came to pass, when Jacob saw Rachel the daughter of Laban his mother's brother, and the sheep of Laban his mother's brother, that Jacob went near, and rolled the stone from the well's mouth, and watered the flock of Laban his mother's brother.
Gen 29:11 And Jacob kissed Rachel, and lifted up his voice, and wept.
Gen 29:12 And Jacob told Rachel that he was her father's brother, and that he was Rebekah's son: and she ran and told her father.

:sorry No thanks coming my way Chopper... we miss your leadership...

It's great to be back. It's amazing how having fun in my favorite hobby, fishing, and to realize how much I miss this Forum, and the activities that go on. I am realizing as I continue to correspond with my fellow Moderators and Administration just how much each one means to me. We are really a close family with an important ministry with our Lord Jesus working thru us. Thank you so much Reba for your part in getting me to be a Mod. :hug
