What happens when you don't pray in the spirit?

Because it has been given to you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it has not been given. 12 For whoever has, to him more will be given, and he will have abundance; but whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken away from him. Matthew 13:11-12 NKJV
What is the purpose of quoting this scripture at this time?

There is a difference between praying in the natural vs. praying in the spirit with tongues.
how so? i will never deny the gift of tongues , i just question the way some use it !!
Romans 8

4 That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

5 For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit.

6 For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.

7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.

8 So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.

9 But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.

10 And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness.

11 But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.

12 Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh.

13 For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.
6 Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.

27 And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God.

( nothing here is mentioned having to speak in tongues }

to be fair to you this is what you banking on 1 Corinthians 14:14 For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful..

if you feel the need to speak in tongues to pray in the spirit . far be it from me to say your wrong. jesus told us to enter to our prayer closet (war room) let me ask this which is more important being saved or speaking in tongues ? if your called upon to pray in public do you pray in tongues ? after all we must pray in the spirit . i hope you understand where i am coming from . once again i do not belittle the Gift of tongues .

Have you been filled with the Holy Spirit? Luke 11:13
let me turn this in a different direction just how filled are you ? paul said not be drunk in excess with wine but filled with the spirit . have you ever sinned since you was filled? anger bad thoughts looked at something you shouldn't . when filled 1. we have no room for any of the flesh. 2. when filled we are controlled -led by the spirit . personally i have to refuel every day. times i fail keep my tank full

1Co_14:39 Wherefore, brethren, covet to prophesy, and forbid not to speak with tongues.

forbid not to speak with tongues.
is speaking in tongues a commandment ? this is not a baited question !! since you was raised Pentecostal you have a better grasp on the subject than some.. i am open to tongues believe in tongues.but have yet to ever do so.. hey i am ordained gen baptist . but to say we have to pray in tongues to pray in the spirit i disagree with. this subject like eternal security has created much division in the Body. some will even be rude and nasty and say tongues is of the devil . even though it is listed as a spiritual gift

36 God’s teaching did not come from you, and you are not the only ones who have received it. 37 If you think you are a prophet or that you have a spiritual gift, you should understand that what I am writing to you is the Lord’s command. 38 If you do not accept this, you will not be accepted.

39 So my brothers and sisters, continue to give your attention to prophesying. And don’t stop anyone from using the gift of speaking in different languages. 40 But everything should be done in a way that is right and orderly. 1Corinthians 14:36-39 ERV

While I never said there wasn't a difference, I'm not sure what your definition of terms such as "praying in the natural" is. I've already established why praying in the spirit in the scripture you cited does not mean "praying in tongues". Praying in tongues may be one way, but the requirement of it that you stated is simply not there.

Co 14:36 What? came the word of God out from you? or came it unto you only?
1Co 14:37 If any man think himself to be a prophet, or spiritual, let him acknowledge that the things that I write unto you are the commandments of the Lord.
1Co 14:38 But if any man be ignorant, let him be ignorant.
1Co 14:39 Wherefore, brethren, covet to prophesy, and forbid not to speak with tongues.
1Co 14:40 Let all things be done decently and in order.

It is one thing to twist members words it is another to so twist the Word of God.

I come from a heritage of Pentecostalism 3 generations deep... Tongue talking is not always real.. or from the Lord.. Don't listen to anyone tell you MUST speak in tongues...
I agree very much so!

Praying in the natural (realm) is how Christians are taught to pray. As if God is up there in heaven looking down listening.

When in fact Christ is in us, and we, in Him. This is literal and different. God is a Spirit, and we must worship Him, in Spirit and in truth. We have a Spirit also.

In the OT, it was, thou shall not murder, adultery, whatever. In the NT, its, if you even think about adultrey then your guilty.

Our heart is where we "think". To focus the intent of our heart has consequences, cause/effect (spiritually). Like our Sister said, she turns inward and prays, and then feels spiritual etc., that's the Spirt! .

We must turn our hearts intent inward and engage and connect with the Spirit of God. He is there, but most times is ignored. Some need quiet to do it, some can mow the grass and do it.

Making contact with the Holy Spirit before you pray is praying in the Spirit, I think.

I was in the Spirit on the Lord's day...:halo

On tongues, I heard about it and wanted it. I asked Brothers & Sisters why didn't I speak in tongues too? I was told several times how easy it is, and they could teach me how.

Speaking in tongues is the Holy Spirit praying for you. It's the Holy Spirit speaking. I knew that was why its impossible to teach someone to speak in tongues.

One day I was praying and my speech changed, not of my own accord. I began speaking in tongues. I knew what it was and let Him finish.

I don't know how to speak in tongues now, lol. Whether or not you've ever spoke in tongues, matters not one whit with regards to being in the Spirit.

It was really cool to talk with no corresponding thought at the same time!

Ok. So a symptom of needing to back away and regroup is moderator intervention on comments.

So far looking at this conversation, iLOVE posted a thought that I assume is thought provoking to her. Being a person who speaks in tongues, and prays in tongues, her thought is, what happens when you don't. With the exception of Reba, I don't think many of us have experience with speaking in tongues, so we can't really go on the aspect of what it's like to pray in tongues. But we can give our answers from our experiences in prayer. Chances are they will be different from eachother because prayer is a very personal thing. I doubt it's the same with anyone. But God's relationships with us are all very indivual and personalistic. If I'm right we shouldn't expect them to be the same. At least that's something we can do to answer this question.

To iLOVE, and Reba, if you gals have prayed in tongues, can you describe what it's like?

The Lounge.
Ahh?
I suppose we have some freedom here; although I sense the camps established in their individual thoughts in these matters.

I would love to make a few comments, but they will fall outside the normal boxes. I consider them scriptural, but you actually do have to allow thinking. Doctrine is so established in this subject that thinking is usually excluded.

I will try a question.
When is tongue talking not real?
Going to the proof text you choose:
Who is being spoken to?
What is their background?
How would the problem be solved?
Could you give a complex description on the subject?

If you allow me to comment, this will kinda be my path. I do speak in tongues, and have been there and had some leading in the subject. Of course I am just a redneck from Mississippi and live in the hotbed of error on the subject. I do not know it all, and from the lack of comments (when I write) I must know nothing. LOL.

1Co 14:14 For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful.
1Co 14:15 What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also.
1Co 14:16 Else when thou shalt bless with the spirit, how shall he that occupieth the room of the unlearned say Amen at thy giving of thanks, seeing he understandeth not what thou sayest?
1Co 14:17 For thou verily givest thanks well, but the other is not edified.
1Co 14:18 I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than ye all:

@Not_Now.Soon The Scripture says it clearly .... a story from my life may give you the understanding from my point of view..
MY 2 grandmothers.
both would pray in tongues
both loved the Lord
one bragged about tongues how with out tongues others were not saved ( pretty strong huh)

Mar 16:17 And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;
Mar 16:18 They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.

And which languages do you speak ? have you ever been hurt? are there any sink in your area or family? Been handling snakes? Drinking any poison? Cast out any demons?
Tongues is easy to fake .. ever pray for some one that did not recover?

Then the devil took Him up into the holy city, set Him on the pinnacle of the temple, 6 and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down. For it is written:

‘He shall give His angels charge over you,’

and,

‘In their hands they shall bear you up,
Lest you dash your foot against a stone.’”b]"

7 Jesus said to him, “It is written again, ‘You shall not tempt the Lord your God.’”c]' Mark 4
