Aside from politics, what is a liberal.
Without putting labels on people and policies, what is a liberal?

"willing to respect or accept behavior or opinions different from one's own; open to new ideas."

I don't think anyone on this forum is very much a liberal.
Aside from our Christianity, we all just believe and do and live however we want.

I'll tell you this, anyone who thinks they are right all the time are certainly not a liberal.

If being a liberal is a good thing, then how did all the evil ones get a hold of it and call themselves liberal?

A note further.
We were all liberals when we received Christ as our Lord and Savior.
Look that one up in your Funk and Wagonal.

It has different meanings in different contexts. Politically I left just left of center, which would put me at least close to being politically liberal. But there's a reason I'm considered a centrist.

I would say a theological liberal is one who deviates from a standard. In this case God's standard.

Liberal politically means a person who supports individual autonomy.

Socially a liberal is a person less likely to be adherent to traditional authority structure.

Ecconomicly it's a person who supports markets or private property rights.

Theologically it's a person or group that deviates from fundamental reading or traditions of the religion.

I know the OP opened with aside from politics, but these terms are most often seen and interpreted in the political spectrum. So from a political spectrum, to recognize the difference between a liberal and a conservative mindset, I would look to the political nature and divide of the Supreme Court. Watching how the judges interpret the law demonstrates the characteristic for each, both the liberal and the conservative.

The main difference to me, is the liberal mind lends toward hearing the spirit of the word, while the conservative mind lends towards interpreting the letter of the word. When it comes to the conservative justices, they appear to be more concerned with interpreting the original meaning of the constitution while the liberal justices try to apply the spirit of the words of the constitution to current matters of justice.

Im still wondering why they are called the bill of rights. I would have thought the bill of privelleges is more realistic and would stop the confusion. I mean some people going on about there so called rights that can be infringed and over ruled.

Bill of rights (privelleges)

(2) Every New Zealand citizen has the right to enter New Zealand.

Obviously not.

The bill of rights is a limit to the federal government to infringe on the rights of the people. The bill doesn't give rights, it gives legal president for people to cite against the government.

In my home country you dont need a licence or be registered to own a boat and be on the water. So i mean its a natural right of freedom, not many left these days. Most country's people need a licence and a registered vessel. I can freely own a boat and motor around with no licence.

I can only speak of Florida but most boat trailers are tagged ,you must have a license with the coast guard . to fish ,you must have a salt or fresh water license .

some states are more restrictive .Florida until recently you only needed a boat license .

because people abandon boats or operate poorly I must disagree with kiwidan.

as of yesterday a boat ran ashore of riomar and was leaking oil and gas .who should pay for removal and clean up ?

if its insurance then they will force you to have a license in order to have a coverage .so either demonstrate profiency to them or the state

So i mean its a natural right of freedom, not many left these days, where that freedom could be taken from the people and sold back to them in the form of a privellege with a licence attached. Most country's people need a licence and a registered vessel. I can freely own a boat and motor around with no licence. There are thousands of boats and hardly any issues. Its not chaos on the water because are not licenced.
The difference in USA law is over public and private property. I don't need a license if I'm at a privately owned lake, but to use public lakes or water ways I would. Most of this comes from case laws and pesky insurance companies poking law makers.
