What is your church like?

Bellows??

you are pentacostal?

Yup for the last 45+ years.

and i always wonder what the those were called. I see that you played the bellows on that as well.

My main "squeeze" is the 5-string banjo, but they happened to catch me with the 'harp" instead.

My church is really nice. We are about 300 active members and our minister has the most amazing gift. He can break down scripture and explain it in layman’s terms so that everybody understands and takes something from it.
And he doesn’t ‘preach’. He talks like he is talking to friends. He will even ask questions and have some interaction in the church. And he never forces anything on anybody. He knows that I ‘don’t do people’, and he is fine with it. If I ever need any support for my charity, he will ask the congregation where he will normally just hand the microphone to who ever wants to ask for donations.<O:p

A minister/pastor can make or break a church. Mine makes it a wonderful place to go to.<O:p

That kind of minister commands a bit of respect from people you invite to church and makes it easier for them to come back. Thats what you want in your church. you are lucky to have found a place like that.

Locking this thread until I can separate it. This was a good discussion meant to share what our churches are like. Since this has turned into a discussion on the value/necessity to be active in a community of worship, I'm going to split this off into its own thread in the AP Forum.

I'll reopen when I'm done editing. :yes

sometime we use the old. i mean old hymnals for worship, and sunday it was like the best worship we had, no drummer and just a quartet and the pastor and one piano player.

its amaing when we put into worship what we get out!

there is a couple of great songs in those amazing grace. etc i have a few times seen a congregation really moved with those.

I remember in my teens though they brought me tears of boredom. 12 year olds dont really get into hymnals. lol

mostly we have Hillsong stuff now do you guys have that too.

lucky we have church the music worship on the forum lacks a bit.

Amen! Hillsong is what we mostly use, and some of our own people are gifted in composing and songwriting also, so we will sometimes sing new things coming from our own people. That is always a blessing, knowing that Holy Spirit is speaking to us through them, knowing our particular needs and flavour!

I go to a babtist church . But dont class myself as one. I class myself as a christain and only go because its close. I'm thinking of finding another one or giving up going as I'm not really getting much out of it. Do we really need to go to church to be a christain, surly not.
nah you dont but its a bit like being afootball player without a team.

we do use contemporary worship so long as it has the name of the lord in it.

the crap on the radio , and i do listen to that but isnt really good worship music all the time. seems to be afraid of the name above all names , and refers to him, this friend of mine, a hero etc.

SHAMELESS COMMERCIAL!

I love my church. But this article was the final straw:

November 29, 2010

Many of the exhortations in the Bible are not popular in today's world. But a new study by the Barna Group indicates that one of the least favorite biblical principles might well be "Obey your spiritual leaders, and do what they say. Their work is to watch over your souls, and they are accountable to God. Give them reason to do this with joy and not with sorrow" (Hebrews 13:17, NLT).

I've started a thread entitled "Battered Sheep," in the General Talk section. It is designed to help Christians who have been hurt by churches to learn how to deal with the problems, prevent them from happening again, and return to successful church service and worship.

at times those songs are more 'inspirational' then actually songs that should cause one too be convicted of sin or uplifted.

not that inspirational songs are a sin but we that are His and Bought by the lord shouldnt be ashamed of him.

definitly should never be ashamed its good to wear your faith with pride.

tell you the truth my personal preference with music is i like originality. because of that I have found it hard to listen to some christian music because it felt like a copy of whats goiing on in the world with christian lyrics.

I do love teaching on the radio . and some christian music.

My church is a missional "church plant." The purpose of the church is to raise up desciples to live missionally in our community, as well as raise new church leaders to plant more churches in the soil of a culture. The church itself is very young, as well as the majority of the congregation. I enjoy the dynamics of the small group because there are members from all walks of life: the very young to the retired, those who've been saved from childhood to ex-cons. Very knowledgeable in theology to those (like me) who know very little. It feels like I learn something more about me and my faith every time I engage in conversation with these people.

Fantastic! It sounds as if your church is doing it right! Praise God!

It seems that some churches put a lot of effort into making attending services a fun-filled event but I have often struggled with this. Church, and in particular our faith walk, is a serious thing and not something to be taken lightly. Does God need to entertain us in order for us to follow? My concern is that we get too caught up in the event, rituals, pomp and circumstance, etc. that we forget to pay attention to the message. Not too unlike the church leaders in Jesus' day that were so caught up in the law they forgot why the law existed in the first place.

What is our church like?
We are one of the many Lutheran church congregations that have recently elected to leave the ranks of the ELCA. Our goal right now is to seek out another synod we believe adheres more closely to biblical truth that we can fellowship with.

When you walk into our church you won’t find a carnival-like party atmosphere at all. What you will find is that we are friendly and inviting. We try to keep things pleasant and light-hearted but also focused on Jesus. Rare is the day that we don’t hang around for at least an hour after service for fellowship and just shooting the breeze with our neighbors and fellow believers. If you leave our church and have not met a new friend then we failed to share Christ’s love.

I was raised in the Catholic church and left the faith when I was about 20. About 15 years later it was this church congregation that inspired me to seek the Lord. It wasn't because of the exciting and uplifting sermon from the pastor. Nor was it because the pastor delivered a fire and brimstone message that I needed to hear. He's not notorious for his delivery and in fact our council often talks about how we wish he could be a little more dynamic at times. It wasn't because I had a lot of fun at the services and couldn't wait for the next one. It wasn't because I was awe inspired by our congregation. It was because I felt welcomed into the house of God. I felt a sense of belonging. There is no doubt that God had his hand in my conversion and he used this congregation to make it happen.

I'm not suggesting that church services should be dull and boring events that help one get to sleep for that good either. I just think we have to be very careful and concentrate on where our focus lies before we have a good time. When we let our guard down it's an invitation for Satan to get his foot in the door.
