What makes you a Christian

John 3:5 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. 6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. 7 Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again. F8 8 The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.

I am a Christian because I have been have been born of the Spirit. I am saved by Grace through Faith, and the Holy Spirit dwells in me. I have been crucified with Christ.

Nice answer, but it would be great if you can elaborate a bit.

Your answer is "the way to" what I am looking for :)

Good answer too, but what does born of the Spirit mean ?

Also, what does it mean to you to be crucified with Christ ,in laymen's terms. I sometimes find that most people have difficulty understanding Christian "sayings" like "walking in the Spirit" "Die to self" "faith" and "crucified with Christ" and the famous" "Walking in the light" . A baby Christian will not know what we are talking about :)

Something is suppose to happen to a person who become a Christian. (Excluding going to heaven) Why does God go through the whole process with us. What does He want must happen to us here on earth?

Regeneration, a total and complete work of God by grace through faith. The old man is dead, and now my life is hidden with Jesus Christ in God.

God said that he would take away all of my sin, give me a new heart and a new spirit, and will write His laws on my heart that I may dwell with Him, be His, and He will be my God.

Exekiel 36:24 For I will take you from among the heathen, and gather you out of all countries, and will bring you into your own land. 25 Then will I sprinkle clean water upon you, and ye shall be clean: from all your filthiness, and from all your idols, will I cleanse you. 26 A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh. 27 And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them. 28 And ye shall dwell in the land that I gave to your fathers; and ye shall be my people, and I will be your God.

I am dead, and have risen again in Christ. My life is hidden with Christ in God.

Colossians 3:1 If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. 2 Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth. 3 For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God. 4 When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory.

I have been 'quickened' by the Son. I have passed from death to life and no longer walk in condemnation.

John 5: 21 For as the Father raiseth up the dead, and quickeneth them; even so the Son quickeneth whom he will. 22 For the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son: 23 That all men should honour the Son, even as they honour the Father. He that honoureth not the Son honoureth not the Father which hath sent him. 24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life. 25 Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God: and they that hear shall live.

I have passed from death to life, and my compulsion for love and obedience to God, with whom I am one, are evidence of His Spirit abiding in my life and giving me victory over sin and a peaceful rest through His work on the cross.

1 John 3:14 We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not his brother abideth in death. 15 Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer: and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him. 16 Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. 17 But whoso hath this world's good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him? 18 My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth. 19 And hereby we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure F4 our hearts before him.

20 For if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things. 21 Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, then have we confidence toward God. 22 And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight.

23 And this is his commandment, That we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave us commandment. 24 And he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him, and he in him. And hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us.

The Lord bless you, Cornelius.

:) Amen , thank you for your beautiful answer.

Yes, what makes us Christian, is when we............manifest Christ.

What makes you a Chdristian? Jesus said "if ye believe not that I am He, ye shall die in your sins" Jn.8:24. But it is more than belief although belief may be used in a way inclusive of much more than sinple belief. Jesus went further to say "except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish" Lk.13:3. Then Jesus also says a confession of Him is necessary, Matt.10:32,33. But He goes further saying "he that believeth and is baptized shall be saved" Mk.16:15,16. Baptism puts one in Christ, Gal.3:27 and one cannot be saved OUT of Christ. This is the substance of Jn.3:5. This is what makes one a Christian. Of course all that is involved in "growing in the grace and the knowlege of our Lord Jesus Christ" II Pet.3:18 follows, as for example II Peter 1:3-ll.

God bless,
duval

Christians are people who are following and serving Jesus with all your heart, soul, strength and mind.

Cornelius, I'm interested in your explanation as to why Jesus said, "everyone who believes in him may have eternal life" (John 3:15) and "whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life" (John 3:16)

What are you saying here Cornelius? That salvation is not by faith alone? Are you discounting the Gospel of John? Not to mention Paul's letters?

That the devils believe has got nothing to do with the Gospel of Christ and who is or is not a "Christian."

Several things here:

First: The devils do not believe in God. They know God. Reread all the passages where they come before Christ. They knew who He was.

Second: God did not make provision for the devils in His plan of redemption. Redemption is for man only-- So whether the devils "believe" or not is irrelevant.

What makes one a "Christian?"

Christ does! When He births a person of His Spirit. He who does not have the Spirit of Christ is none of His as Paul said.

Good question and the answer is life changing.

Most people will read that verse and only see Jesus in their minds eye and think. "Oh, all I have to do is to believe that once there was the Son of God and His name was Jesus and He died for my sins. I believe that" (and so they think, they have just entered into eternal life)

But they forget that Jesus also said the He is the Word of God. Now that complicates the believing a little, because if He is also the Word, you have to believe the Word AND the first part I mentioned about Him being the Son of God etc.

We are within the truth, if you replace the word "Word of God" where it says "him" in those verses and you will see something happening to those verses regarding their fuller meaning.

Manifesting Christ, is to manifest the Word. (they are the same) Most people never give this a second thought, but if you think about it, it becomes a wonderful truth, that will open the door for you, to grow in truth even more.

Believing in Jesus/Word of God means that , that Word brings life. Jesus said so Himself and His disciples agreed:
Joh 6:51 I am the living bread which came down out of heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: yea and the bread which I will give is my flesh, for the life of the world.
Do you see that eating the Word, (His flesh) is the thing that actually brings eternal life. We have to read all Scripture in relation to each other , to complete the puzzle. When people only take one idea, they land in error. We need the whole truth all at once: Psa 119:160 The sum of thy word is truth
Look here the disciples realizes the truth about the Word that brings eternal life:Joh 6:68 Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life.

Again Jesus said about Himself: Joh 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, and the truth, and the life: no one cometh unto the Father, but by me.

So the .....sum of the Word (the whole Word) is truth and Jesus said ......."I am the truth" , so He is the sum of the Word. He IS the Word.

So if you read and believe the Bible, you will receive the Seed of God (Mat 13:37 And he answered and said, He that soweth the good seed is the Son of man; ) You will be receiving Christ in "seed form" and that seed will grow and produce ?........Christ. Gen 1:12 And the earth brought forth grass, herbs yielding seed after their kind, and trees bearing fruit, wherein is the seed thereof, after their kind: and God saw that it was good. All seed produces after its own kind. Even the Seed of God.

So that is how you get eternal life. The Seed produces Christ in you, but first you must have a "good soil heart" to produce a crop. That happens when you believe the Word."everyone who believes in him may have eternal life" (John 3:15) and "whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life" (John 3:16)

I understand and agree with all that, Cornelius. But believing in Jesus as the Son of God and as the Word is still just believing. And, according to Jesus, believing is enough.

This makes me a Christian

John 17: 1. These words spake Jesus, and lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, Father, the hour is come; glorify thy Son, that thy Son also may glorify thee:

2. As thou hast given him power over all flesh, that he should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him.

3. And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.

4. I have glorified thee on the earth: I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do.

5. And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was.

6. I have manifested thy name unto the men which thou gavest me out of the world: thine they were, and thou gavest them me; and they have kept thy word.

7. Now they have known that all things whatsoever thou hast given me are of thee.

8. For I have given unto them the words which thou gavest me; and they have received them, and have known surely that I came out from thee, and they have believed that thou didst send me.

9. I pray for them: I pray not for the world, but for them which thou hast given me; for they are thine.

10. And all mine are thine, and thine are mine; and I am glorified in them.

11. And now I am no more in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to thee. Holy Father, keep through thine own name those whom thou hast given me, that they may be one, as we are.

12. While I was with them in the world, I kept them in thy name: those that thou gavest me I have kept, and none of them is lost, but the son of perdition; that the scripture might be fulfilled.

13. And now come I to thee; and these things I speak in the world, that they might have my joy fulfilled in themselves.

14. I have given them thy word; and the world hath hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.

15. I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil.

16. They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.

17. Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.

18. As thou hast sent me into the world, even so have I also sent them into the world.

19. And for their sakes I sanctify myself, that they also might be sanctified through the truth.

20. Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word;

21. That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.

22. And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one:

23. I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as thou hast loved me.

24. Father, I will that they also, whom thou hast given me, be with me where I am; that they may behold my glory, which thou hast given me: for thou lovedst me before the foundation of the world.

25. O righteous Father, the world hath not known thee: but I have known thee, and these have known that thou hast sent me.

26. And I have declared unto them thy name, and will declare it: that the love wherewith thou hast loved me may be in them, and I in them.

The blood of Jesus, the grace of God and who Jesus was himself.

I've never been religious material, and fortunately, neither is he.

The correct question is, what makes one a Born again Christian?

All these are required:
Believing in God
Believing Jesus is Son of God
Believing Jesus is God
Believing Jesus died for ALL sins
Believing He rose again
Accepting Jesus as Savior and confessing you're a sinner
Praying only to God
Believing in six literal days of creation
Believing in a Rapture and tribulation period
