Bible Study Where you say?

OK. I don't spend much time on theology, partly because I'm not that well versed and partly because because I see some things completely out of step with widely accepted interpretations. This is one of those times, but I'll share my view. This is just a curiosity exercise so feel free to react however you feel. I just see it as I see it and don't know if I could ever "unsee it" as i do.
So let's start. OK. You walk into a room and there is a long table and there are chairs all around the table with place settings. There is a chair at each end of the table and a vast dinner is about to be served. Christ will be seated at one end or the other, but we're not sure which end. There are no names at the settings so you are free to choose where you sit.
John the Baptist is seated near one end. Which end will Christ be seated and why? Which end do you choose to seat yourself and why?

This is a pretty good etiquette question. It'll be interesting to see the different responses. Ok to answer the question first, as you describe it....I would prolly just stand until told to be seated, just out of respect and I believe humbleness would not allow it to simply take a seat. I'm presuming that this is some sort of black tie event because of the tone set forth.

I've given this sort of thing a little thought before, and if John the Baptist was already seated but most others or Jesus had not yet, then I guess it's a reasonable assumption that He would sit at John the Baptists side at the head. So the thing to do would be to have a seat at the far side of the table on the side if bidden to just have a seat anywhere...so, to the far side because what makes me think that I would be seen honorable enough to go sit with John and Jesus?! So that's why I said I'd stand until told to be seated. Being able to be seated at the same table as our Lord Jesus, anywhere at the table would be a huge honor!

It is good to think on these things, and I hardly ever see people making an effort to have class or etiquette. Most people don't even know how to be a good listener! When one arrives somewhere and you walk into the room and the music is playing, and no one is talking....don't talk, listen. Wait until the piece is over and then talk. It's just polite thing to do. My dad taught me lots of little things like this, bless him! And you know what else? Scripture talks about this very subject. It's in Luke, I'll look it up...

It's in Luke 14.

I've actually called people on the not being a good listener and remaining quiet when you enter and they're listening to music, have some class buddy! I got mocked for it!, and that's ok because his dad just didn't know these things.

I don't know it all, lol. I was over 50 years old already before I ever even heard of a White tie event! I thought Black tie was the best, not so! White tie is. I would think that an event that the Lord is hosting would be White tie?

This reminds me of a testimony that I heard before. Something he said stuck out to me. He was taken up to the 3rd heaven or whereever, in heaven and was being shown around, and he saw Jesus talking to different Angels, giving them instructions and so forth. And he said when they were done talking, the Angel would not turn and walk away from Jesus. The Angels did one or two back steps away from Jesus and then turned to go their way. So as not to turn their back to the Lord!

I was like, hmm, I'm going to remember that! That makes good sense!

I would probably be standing up and eating.
I would feel I wasn't worthy.
Jesus will be at the head of the table..

Jesus is the King, so He will be at the place of authority.

We have these instructions:

“When you are invited by anyone to a wedding feast, do not sit down in the best place, lest one more honorable than you be invited by him; and he who invited you and him come and say to you, ‘Give place to this man,’ and then you begin with shame to take the lowest place. But when you are invited, go and sit down in the lowest place, so that when he who invited you comes he may say to you, ‘Friend, go up higher.’ Then you will have glory in the presence of those who sit at the table with you. For whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.” Luke 14:8-11 NKJV

Yes. This is our instruction from the Lord. Which end is the head of the table though? Remember, even in our Lord's instructions He said to be seated......but where? Where will our Lord be seated near John or at the other end?

I must confess that if it comes to whether or not I would be able to sit next to Jesus, I would probably start getting greedy and push my way through the crowd. :lol I know that sounds bad. :blush

Well, if Jesus were in the room or at the table, I would probably not be able to sit or stand. I'd be on my knees or my face!

Ok, stupid. I'm trying to figure out the RIGHT answer. But it occurred to me that Jesus said He came to serve and that we should have that same attitude, I can't figure out how that would play out in a seating arrangement around a table! Help!

I suppose I will just ask someone who has been there awhile. If it isn't obvious from the appearance of the table. Maybe one of the angels will know.

I don'k know where John will be seated.
Remember Matt 11:11. Now where will John be seated? Where will Jesus be seated?

“Assuredly, I say to you, among those born of women there has not risen one greater than John the Baptist; but he who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. Mathew 11:11 NKJV

I'm not sure. Greater than those born of women, lesser than anyone in the kingdom of heaven. Seated where by this?

Christ would be seated at the head of the table making no difference which end it would be as He knows the end from the beginning. John would be sitting at the furthest side as he said he must decrease and Christ increase, John 3:30.

I would want to sit next to Jesus so I could drink in everything He had to say. It's like that of Mary in Luke 10:38-42 as Martha busied herself, but her sister Mary sat at the feet of Jesus as she couldn't tear herself away from Him.

that has a cultural context. we really don't have nobility in America. the closest I can think of is how the military will set soldiers at military balls which is based on rank, same rank at the tables, or if not able all ncos at one, and officers at the other and lower enlisted. its been a while since I attended that and I know that they also will set barracks like this. being a ssg, I was with the leadership e6 to e8, lts and the co only if officer quarters weren't available, e5 were with the lower enlisted to be with their men , I wont go into the gender issues where all the females were together.
