Who are the elect? and are you one?

I thought I would throw out a question that perhaps many of us could comment on with out it turning into more drama.

Who are the elect? and are you one?

The elect is spoken of through out the NT so what are your thoughts?

I have always been taught that the elect are Jews. Gentiles are called. :)

1Cr 1:27 But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty;
:lilangel: I'M CHOSEN!!

I am also among the elect!

Mat 24:31 And he shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.
Luk 18:7 And shall not God avenge his own elect, which cry day and night unto him, though he bear long with them?
Rom 8:33 Who shall lay any thing to the charge of God's elect? [It is] God that justifieth.
1Pe 1:2 Elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through sanctification of the Spirit, unto obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace unto you, and peace, be multiplied.

You are one of the elect if you continue to live like one of the elect.

2Pet.1
[10] Therefore, brethren, be the more zealous to confirm your call and election, for if you do this you will never fall;

Of course we all believe we are among the elect. Continue to make your call and election sure however or your not. :-?

Is there a difference between Chosen and elect? This is how I look at it. Did God chose to love us? He didn't have but did. Did God chose the Jews to be the apple of His eye? You bet. Did God chose to send His Son to die on a Cross for the forgiveness of sins? You bet. Now, do we have to chose God's offer of Salvation to be saved? You bet. Either one rejects or accepts Christ because we do have free will. We are the elect in the sense that we are part of the Body of Christ. The Jews are the Divine elect that God has chosen to bring in Christ for Salvation of everyone who believes and confesses Him as Lord and Savior.

I know this may bother the Calvanists about predestination, but let's use the analogy of a great ship on its way to heaven. The ship ( the church) is chosen by God to be his very own vessel. Christ is the captain and Pilot of His ship. All who desire to be a part of this elect ship and its Captain can do so through a living faith in Christ, by which they come on board the ship. As long as they are on the ship, in company witrh the Ship's Captain, they are among the elect. If they choose to abandon the ship and Captain, they cease to be part of the elect. ( actually publically renouncing Christ after one is saved). Election is always only in union with the Captain and His Ship. Predestination tells us about the ship's destination and what God has prepared for those remaining on it. God invites everyone to come aboard the elect shipp through in Jesus Christ. Bottom line, It is the plan of God that He has had from the beginning when there was no beginning.

Cool, now let me throw some monkey wrenches into it.
I should say that I am not a Calvinist or an Amenianest. I think both theological views have problems and could debate both sides of the issue to a stalemate, so lets not turn this into an armenianist / calvinist debate.

What do you make of these verses and how do they reflect on the elect?
Eph 1:5
5 having predestined us to adoption as sons by Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will.

Eph 1:11-12
11 In Him also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestined according to the purpose of Him who works all things according to the counsel of His will, 12 that we who first trusted in Christ should be to the praise of His glory.

Well, I think it is all about the Plan that God had for mankind. We see in Eph. 2 that Jesus Christ executed the plan. Eph. 3 we see that the Holy Spirit reveals the plan.

I love it!
Jack, when I tell this story it is a bus on the way to a mall. The bus is predestined to go to the mall. We have the choice to get on the bus or not. :D

Mat 18:26 The servant therefore fell down, and worshipped him, saying, Lord, have patience with me, and I will pay thee all.
Mat 18:27 Then the lord of that servant was moved with compassion, and loosed him, and forgave him the debt.

Is the person / people Jesus is speaking of in Rev 3:15-16 part of the elect? Are these people / person saved?

15 I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot. I could wish you were cold or hot. 16 So then, because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will vomit you out of My mouth.

My understanding of the 'elect' is those whose names are written in the book of life. These are those who are God's children - born of the Spirit of God.

Am I one of the elect? Yes - by God's grace alone, and not through anything that I have done.

I think that refers to the Church, because in Chapter 3 of Revelation the Rapture has not happened yet. I believe when Christ comes back He will see the state the Church is in. Some will be on fire for Him others will have lost their first love and others will proclaim they are Christians but living in the world and following the lust thereof..

JG - you're asking a lot of questions. :-? Is this coz you don't know what these scriptures mean and would like to or . . . ?

Yes, yes, yes.
The elect are in the Lambs book of life. :D

You are correct. Many commentators believe it is speaking of individuals and it could be, but I think if read in context, its the church. This is what most pretribers believe. I am guessing that you are a pretriber as am I. I believe the church gets raptured between chapter 3 and 4. I know this is of topic, but thought I'd ask.

I've had many debates about this very topic on here with Vic and Judy -their just crazy hehe- you know I love ya..

Yes I'm a pretriber

Actually Mutz
The reason for the questions or question is to try and get topics going with out much controversy. topics where we can fellowship with one another.
I was reading Ecclesiastes the other day in church and stated the read chapter 3 and verse 8 struck me in a new way.
A time to love and a time to hate
A time for war and a time for peace.
Right now atleast for today its a time for peace.

As far as my bible knowledge goes, well I think you would be surprised.
Stay tuned
