Who's REALLY at fault?

We have been told to watch out for ourselves, and to search the Scriptures for ourselves....... BUT, if we choose, instead, to believe whatever we hear a person say, whether it comes from our preacher, some person on here, a televangelist, or even the Catholic Pope.................................... Then who is really at fault for following False Information?

O be careful little eyes what you see
O be careful little eyes what you see
There's a Father up above
And He's looking down in love
So, be careful little eyes what you see

O be careful little ears what you hear
O be careful little ears what you hear
There's a Father up above
And He's looking down in love
So, be careful little ears what you hear

O be careful little hands what you do
O be careful little hands what you do
There's a Father up above
And He's looking down in love
So, be careful little hands what you do

O be careful little feet where you go
O be careful little feet where you go
There's a Father up above
And He's looking down in love
So, be careful little feet where you go

O be careful little mouth what you say
O be careful little mouth what you say
There's a Father up above
And He's looking down in love
So, be careful little mouth what you say

we are responsible

Brother @Willy T, what you describe is the reason we find so many various doctrines, and to me what different believers believe is what they perceive from teachings they may have heard or read. Many times it is evidently the fault of their understanding of context, or the church they may have been raised in but I read in Rom 14:1 Him that is weak in the faith receive ye, but not to doubtful disputations.

It goes on in Rom 14:2 For one believeth that he may eat all things: another, who is weak, eateth herbs.

Rom 14:3 Let not him that eateth despise him that eateth not; and let not him which eateth not judge him that eateth: for God hath received him.

I would then ask what it is that makes one of our brethren to call upon God at any point in their life?

Rom 10:13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. Is this really true?

Will that change their standing of being received or kept by God depending if they seemingly do everything wrong according to our theology?

Trust God's wisdom over our own. Unless we change and have the faith of a child we won't enter the Kingdom of Heaven.

To me these two principles give me hope.

James 3:1 (ESV) Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers, for you know that we who teach will be judged with greater strictness.

It seems that the ones who teach carry the greater responsibility.

... but, that also means that if I hear Joe the Preacher say something, I definitely should make sure I know it is true before I go about "teaching" it to someone else :)

As a believer in Christ a person has the Holy Spirit in them.

The Spirit inside you will let you know if what you hear is true or false. Therefore, the ultimate responsibility is upon you.

Many times we don't want to listen. There are so many reasons why.

1 John 4:1 (ESV)
Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world.

We are responsible for the test. But notice it's not an outward appearance test, but one of unseen things. I wouldn't make more from it than it is. We just simply test them based on the Spirit of God in us. He will confirm or deny whether the others are true or false.

Hello everyone

so true many teachers doctrines and denominations to choose

i love the wisdom of God

we can choose any denomination or doctrine we believe represents the accuracy of the truth

however God does not hold our denominations responsible for our thoughts words and deeds

he holds us accountable for those things

our denomination doctrines are suppose to develop teach and cultivate us

to become living Christlike examples of Jesus unconditional love mercy compassion and forgiveness etc

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long suffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. Galatians 5.22

Peace

We should definitely search the scriptures themselves.
The people who were known to do that were the Bereans.
The scriptures that they searched were the Greek version of the Old Testament, the Septuagint. (LXX) The New Testament hadn't been written yet.
They were fluent in Greek
The average modern reader is not fluent in the ancient Koine Greek of the New Testament or the Hebrew and Chaldean of the Old Testament.
But there are people who devote a lot of time, effort, and money getting specialized education to be able to understand the scriptures at a much higher technical level than the average reader. Hopefully, they also have the Holy Spirit to keep them on track.
If I have a medical problem, I don't look it up in a medical book. I go to an expert; a doctor.
I put my physical well being in the hands of that doctor because he has also devoted a lot of time, effort and money getting the specialized training to become a doctor of medicine.
Why would I not do the same for my eternal well being? Why would I not consult someone with formal training? They tend to be pastors and Bible college and Seminary professors and priests. They commonly do not have tens of thousands of followers, live in multi-million dollar mansions, or have a net worth in the tens or hundreds of millions of dollars.
And every last one of us is fallible.

jus' sayin'

That tune was played so often by me in my first Sunday School Class that I can still hear it in my mind.

  • It is almost a truism that our beliefs on almost any subject are influenced by our pre-conceived ideas, especially in theology.
  • There are so many helps or aids to lead us, hopefully to the truth, such as concordances, lexicons, commentaries etc.
  • We are encouraged to "..present yourself to God as one approved, a workman who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth." 2 Tim. 2:15 NIV.
  • While teachers will be judged for their false teaching, I believe we, as individuals, are responsible for being led astray.

The one following the false information would be at fault.

That is why you must be born again, a personal relationship with Christ.

I would say both with however taught you having it worse.
No one will be judged in ignorance

Reminder: This is the Theology forum in which certain rules apply. When posting an opposing viewpoint, supporting Scripture needs to be provided. I know the OP doesn't provide Scripture but because a question was presented rather than a specific doctrine for discussion it would seem the Scripture is what is being sought.
