Why do bad things happen to Christians..

What I can't seem to understand is ,why do bad things happen to Christians? People who devote their lives to loving and worshiping God. People who consider him the most important above all, who truly share a profound connection and beautiful bond with him. I've seen so many Christians affected with illnesses, getting into accidents, getting hurt, etc. Why does God allow these harmful things to affect us? Why does the Lord allow such pain to reach us? That is what truly makes me question my faith in God. And for some reason, it always happens to the good people in this world. The ones who are genuine and admirable. The ones who are sincere and righteous. Why do horrible things continue to happen to us in this world? Why doesn't the Lord sustain us, and protect us from all that is out to harm us and impair us? Why can't the holy angels descend and guard us? I just wish that things weren't like this.. I just don't know what to think anymore.

I have asked similar questions too. It's when such things happen to us that we prove our love to Him. At times it's a test of faith.

Job was a blameless and upright man who was tremendously blessed by God but suffered unimaginable adversities and tragedies that no man today will probably experience.

Satan was behind it who wanted to have Job challenged of his faith in God and God allowed it with the condition that satan was not to kill him.

Even today I believe many of us go through such tests of faith. The story of Job was not put in the Bible for nothing but to show us a glimpse of the spiritual world that we live in.

All of us believers go through trials and tribulations, some due to our own failure and sins, some probably due to satan's boredom and evil desire to torment us which God allows for a purpose.

We can only hope and pray that we will emerge victorious out of the depression with a double dose of God's blessings just as Job enjoyed in the end when he passed the challenge !

The deeper sorrow caves into our hearts, the more room love can fill. The knowledge of the cross is hidden within the sufferings of the cross.

A quote from Ascetic Homilies of Isaac the Syrian:

The path of God is a daily cross. No one has ascended into Heaven by means of ease, for we know where the way of ease leads and how it ends.

In truth, without afflictions there is no life.

I use to think it was something I was doing that separated me from Gods healing power in my life. There is not a day that goes by that I am not in pain. I can't even count how many times I hit my knees and humbled my self before the Lord asking for healing, but has yet to manifest in my life.

Below is the scripture God gave me and now I know I might have pain with my infirmity, but the pain (flesh) doesn't have me as I know God is greater than my pain and I can
still allow His light to shine through me as a witness to others to rise above that which tries to hold me down and look forward to the day when there will be no more pain, no more tears and no more sorrow as nothing of this world is going to separate me from the love of God.

2Corinthians 12:9 And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.

Our Sunday school was studying from Job the past couple weeks and this quesiton came up. One of our congregation replied with the following.

"An even greater question is why do good things happen to any of us."

This gave me pause.

I have thought the same too, frankly. People tend to love God only when chicken is in the fridge. When the fridge is empty we think God is unfair.

So why do good things happen to us. Thanks for that. Thank you for that.

I struggled to answer that question. One thought is perhaps because God is a loving God and he loves us.

Romans 8:28. Matt 5:45. Some times to teach us something. Sometimes to make us stronger. Sometimes cause we deserve it, wait we do deserve hell. Christ suffered on the cross why should we feel we deserve not to suffer. We are just passing through here, all pain and suffering will be gone one day. The price of the curse.

Here's just a few random thoughts I have on this...

He disciplines His own children.
Sometimes we're in the wake of someone else's sinful pursuits.
Jesus told us we'd have trouble.
We live in a fallen world.
I can often look back and know I've grown through adversity, so I don't believe I'd have grown in my faith, had I not.
Everyone has troubles. Everyone has worries. Everyone can tell a sad story. It might be self-centered to look at certain people and say nothing bad has happened to them.

I honestly believe you have asked the wrong question.

Why do bad things happen to anyone?

:yes

Job is a good example.

When bad things happen to Christians, we have to believe the scriptures.
Romans 8:28 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.

As they did for Job as well.

The short answer is it draws us closer to God. Many of you remember a member here some time ago named lovely. Her name is Tina. She is a perfect example of somebody who drew closer to God the more she as afflicted, and she had a positive impact on many people on this forum as she held true to her screen name.

I don't know why we as Christians believe we are exempt from suffering and pain in this world. Imagine the pain and suffering Jesus went through not only on the Cross, but when his own people rejected him and to see the hypocrisy and distortion of his commandments. Why do we think we shouldn't endure pain? Look at the suffering of the first Christians... Rejected from their fellow Jews, rejected from their nation, rejected from the gentiles. Are we better than any of them?

As Christians, we've got to get out of the mindset that we are exempt from suffering and this idea that life is fair. We've got to get to a place where we believe the scriptures...

Romans 8:28 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.

The question is, do you love God, and are you learning as Christians how to love God? Love is deep and holds meaning. Do we really know how to love?

1 Corinthians 13:4-7 Love suffers long, and is kind; love envies not; love vaunts not itself, is not puffed up, Does not behave itself rudely, seeks not her own, is not easily provoked, keeps no record of evil; Rejoices not in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth; Bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

"For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith Jehovah. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts." Isaiah 55 v 8-9.

When I ask myself that question, the above Scripture comes to mind. Providence is a mystery to all of us, but we can be assured that God has allowed certain things for a reason. It might be disciplinary. It might also be formative. It might well be protective: one bad thing might save you from another, much worse thing.

I think it's possible that God brings trials and exercises into our lives in order to teach us dependence on Him. Job has been mentioned already, and that is a very fine example. I think Scriptures like these are provided as an answer to just such questions.

We can be comforted in the knowledge that, when bad things happen to a believer, they have an incomparable resource in the Lord. I've lost count of the number of believers' grave-sides I've stood at in my short life, and at each one, there was a sense of victory, mixed with the sorrow. There is the comfort of knowing, when we lose a loved one, or speak to someone else who is mourning such a loss, that it is the perfect timing of God, and that Christ has taken another one of His people to be with Himself.

Of course, death isn't the only suffering we'll encounter. But in all other things, surely we can be comforted in knowing that this short span will soon be over, and our heavenly King is soon to come to gather all those that are His.

Denique Coelum

You are a breath of fresh air! Thank you! :waving

You're very kind to say so. I'm sure there's a lot more people here who would say exactly the same thing as I've just done, and more eloquently too. I just think it's important to acknowledge that trials may come, while at the same time being comforted in the knowledge that we all have a never-failing friend in Jesus, from the very youngest to the eldest. :) Wonderful to contemplate, God's vast provision for our needs.

Yes Denique Coelum, there are many who are probably more eloquent than either of us and the discussion could grow very large very quickly.

But I do believe that we would all agree, that when the day comes when every tear is wiped away... it will be a very good day indeed. I await that day patiently as many others do likewise.

Revelation 21:4 And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.
