Why do I have doubt whenever I read The Bible?

It just bothering me when I re-read the New Testament and my thoughts give me doubt of my faith. How can I combat it?

The easiest way to grow in your faith is to do what it is that you read, even if it is just one thing. If you want to believe what the scriptures say, DO what Jesus told you to do and TEST it and see how things come out. For example, Jesus said it is better to give that receive. Do you get your joy out of giving to people you love than getting from them? If so, you have shown that it is true. Jesus said we need to forgive those who sin against us. Try it. Forgive those who have done you wrong and see how that turns out.

Challenge it in another new thread if you must.
So we cannot answer someone who tells a young believer the Bible is essentially bunk? We cannot defend the sheep from wolves? “A new thread” is like telling the shepherd to move to the next hill in defending the sheep where there is neither sheep nor wolf. Go for it wolves!

WIP Where is the rule that says you must answer the OP? I just read them again and could not find it.

Any btw, the post asking if the poster is "born again" is against the ToS. Go get them instead of me.

Hi Dorothy Mae

Whoa there little lady. To ask someone that's having difficulty with Scripture reading if they've been born again, I believe, is a perfectly valid response to such a complaint. I think the Scriptures are reasonably clear that without the guiding wisdom of the Spirit, understanding of the Scriptures can prove difficult. So, according to the Scriptures, there's a very real possibility that the reason the OP doesn't understand the Scriptures is that he hasn't yet received the indwelling Holy Spirit.

If any of that is true, then my asking if they've been born again is a perfectly appropriate question for such a complaint.

Further, I believe, that when one doubts their faith, while reading the Scriptures, then they are probably reading things that are condemning them for sin. Again, it's the job of the Holy Spirit, according to Paul, who was given to us as a guarantee of the 'assurance' of our soon coming salvation. So, as I understand it, if a believer does not have assurance of their soon coming salvation, then they're missing the Holy Spirit part.

I think that the presence or lack there of the Holy Spirit, is paramount to understanding and working out this person's problem.

God bless,
Ted

I understand your thoughts but ….According to the ToS it isn’t allowed. Not my rules.

Hi Dorothy Mae

That's as far as I'm going with this discussion since a warning has already been issued against conversing with those on a thread in this forum, other than the OP. According to WIP, that was the first break of the rules.

God bless,

(Sorry for not adding more context.) So, whenever I read Matthew from the start, I had the feeling of doubt, same as reading Genesis in the Old Testament. It bothers me, and I want to know why I'm feeling like this.

Probably more than one reason why your thoughts proceed that way.

Hi SailorWriter

Well, personally, I'd need a bit more context. I say that because your complaint started with you doubting your faith. However, this post seems to make the point that you may be doubting your faith, not because of some issue in your life, as I had spoken of, but rather your inability to believe what you're reading. Is that right?

In other words, you mention Genesis, is it the six days creation event that causes you to stumble? The fact that the Scriptures tell us that Adam and Eve were the first two people to live on the earth, and seemingly only about 6,000 years ago? I'm not quite clear on what it is in Matthew that is causing issues.

So, as I say, I'd need a bit more context. But still, even this issue likely stems from not having the Holy Spirit to help you understand the testimony of God in His words to us.

God bless,
Ted

Hi SailorWriter

I find that doubt comes from a lack of Spiritual knowledge and as miamited ask, have you been Spiritually born again and indwelled with the Holy Spirit. If so, before you read scripture pray and ask the Holy Spirit to give you understanding of what you are reading. There is Spiritual knowledge and carnal knowledge as many are trying to understand scripture with a carnal mind of logical ideas that are far from the Spiritual truths.

If you get stuck on a certain scripture please feel free to ask us any questions you have and we will try to help with understanding as the Holy Spirit will work through others to help in your understanding.

Can you be more specific? What are you doubting?

Please remember that the Bible is not Western Journalism! If you're looking for "the facts" to line up with one another that will not happen. Rather, the Bible is written to teach us spiritual truth. If you look for meaning you will be far better off.
