Funny, I don't usually do this but I had just tweeted Joel Osteen the 1 Corinthians 2:2 the other day.
I gave him that verse because he does a lot of motivational speaking and doesn't really talk about Jesus.
The message of the cross if foolishness to those who are perishing and that is why Paul just wanted to preach the cross.

There is nothing else for the Christian to preach.
Everything comes back to Jesus and the cross.
If your church does not preach this, ask them why and prepare to leave it.

The initial message of Jesus Christ is his death on the cross. I think that is what Paul is emphasising

For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind (2 Timothy 1:7). (These three only work when faith is placed and maintained exclusively in Christ and Him Crucified. Rom. 8:2/the help of the Holy Spirit) - Grace only flows when my faith is in the death of Jesus (Christ Crucified). The Holy Spirit will deliver this believer into the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ. 2 Cor. 4:11-12, Gal. 2:21, Romans 6:3-5
As servants of Righteousness (Romans 6:18), and the only way we can continue to serve that Righteousness is by the Grace of God (Galatians 2:21). Which means the Grace of God is flowing into that Believer because their Faith is placed and maintained exclusively in Christ and Him Crucified. If the Believer Faith is not in Christ and Him Crucified (the death of Christ who loved us and gave Himself for us - Galatians 2:20, 1 John 4:9-10) you are out of the will of God. Which means we have removed ourselves from Him (Galatians 1:6).

I agree that he doesn't go as deep as his father did. But he has his style and I don't get bad vibes from him.
And I also hear him talking about Jesus quite a lot.
This verse is often used by preachers to voice their loyalty to God and the Gospel. And, I understand what they mean. And I do not reproach them for it.
But...the verse is not saying that at all. Instead, it is a rebuke to the Corinthians for Paul to have to preach to them only Christ and Him crucified. Read all of chapter 2 of (1 Cor.). Then read (1 Cor. 3:1). "And I brethren, could not speak unto you as unto spiritual, but as unto carnal, even as unto babes in Christ."
It's a rebuke for them to grow up.

Of course. We grow in knowledge of God. In our walk with God we grow in our faith towards God. We grow in our maturity as sons of God.
But, in righteousness, we do not grow. The day you were born-again, that is as righteous as you will ever be, and as righteous as you will ever need to be.

Paul said through the Holy Spirit, "and be found in Him, not having my own righteousness, which is from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which is from God by faith; that I may know Him and the power of His resurrection, and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death, Philippians 3:9-10
Question how does a Believer be found in Him (Jesus Christ), not having their own righteousness, being conformed to His death?

99.999% Christians practice sin (the works of the flesh).
Sometimes it takes a mountain, sometimes a trouble sea, sometimes it takes a desert to bring us to our knees. Death must be written of the flesh!
God does not give victory to the flesh. All victory is in Jesus Christ; all victory is in Who He Is and What He accomplished for us at Calvary. Those who are proclaiming Jesus, but forsaking the Cross are wrestling with God. They are trying to bring about victory other than by God's prescribed order of victory which is the "Law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus-God's prescribed order of victory over sin, the world, the flesh, and the Devil (Rom. 8:2)." This is why God (Jehovah, i.e., "a pre-incarnate appearance of the Lord Jesus Christ") touched the hollow of Jacob thigh (type of the flesh). We learn from this, "Jacob the heel catcher," went from wrestling to clinging, (the flesh is now crippled) depending on God's blessing(s). The sentence of death must be written on the flesh-the power of the Cross must be entered into before we can steadily walk with God.
Remember, if you leave the Cross, you walk away from God! Most Christians have left their First Love. They are proclaiming Jesus, but forsaking the Cross (lukewarm). This is called "Spiritual Adultery." If it continues, the scripture says the light is removed! Revelation 2:1-7; Revelation 3:14-19
The only way to God is through Jesus Christ (John 14:6)...the only way to Jesus Christ is by the Means of the Cross (Luke 14:27). The only way to the Cross is a denial of self (Luke 9:23). If any person tries to come any other way, Jesus says, "they are a thief and a robber" (John 10:1).

Out of 603,550 men who were readied for war that came out of Egypt under the power of God (Numbers 1:44-46), only two took their inheritance; Joshua (a type of Christ) and Caleb (a type of the body of Christ) (Matthew 7:14). There is only one message that changes the body of Christ into the image of Christ, and that is Jesus Christ and Him Crucified.

Our faith in Christ delivers to us the righteousness of Christ by imputation. It is not ours. It is the righteousness of Christ. Having that, God will bring the experiences in ones life, which was Paul's desire, that would be similar in the sufferings of Christ. The believer can suffer to a degree as Christ suffered. They hated Him without a cause. False testimony against Him. Misrepresented Him. Killed Him even. Simply put they came against Him because He was of God.
