WARNING: Do not install the trial version of Microsoft's latest operating system - unless you're a total IT geek who likes living dangerously.
Millions of curious PC users around the world have rushed to download and install the `beta' release of Windows 7, despite Microsoft warning "it can be glitchy" and "there's a chance of losing files".
Keith Younger, president of the 7600-plus members Melbourne PC User Group, said the general public are being used as Microsoft's "free guinea pigs".
"Microsoft has 2.5-million-plus people around the world busy finding their bugs for them," he said.
* First impressions: How Windows 7 works, or not
Mr Younger said the dangers of installing Windows 7 include:
* the new OS may be vulnerable to malicious attacks
* An older or different version of Windows has to be installed before Windows 7 beta expires on August 1 (2009)
* the system may be unstable and you risk losing your files
* unknown issues may arise.
"There are risks with using any beta software," Mr Younger said.
"One only needs to look at the number of issues that arose with Vista – and are still arising with Vista.
"Straight away, from a security aspect, you need to realise there are a lot of people trying to pick it apart to discover vulnerabilities."
Warnings aside, early signs for Microsoft's newest operating system are positive.
"A number of our members who've downloaded and started using it are telling me all sorts of good things," Mr Younger said.
"It's actually a possibility that Microsoft might have got it right this time – it's probably what Vista should have been in the first place.
"Once installed, start-up is quicker than Vista and certainly at least as good as XP, which is where many people stayed – a lot of people didn't bother with Vista."
However, Windows 7 may be foiled by anti-trust activists in the United States.
"There's already a lot of chatter on the web that Windows 7 is being heavily scrutinised for anti-trust issues," Mr Younger said.
"Naturally, Microsoft have their commercial interests at heart and Windows 7 appears to be biased towards Microsoft's own applications.
"Internet Explorer works better on it than Firefox and the same for Outlook, rather than anything else for your email."
Microsoft has not set a date for the commercial release of Windows 7, but a spokesperson said some time at the end of 2009 or early in 2010 was most likely.

Never mind that, don't use it until MS brings out a replacement OS for it. That's usually how long it takes them to get these things right.

And you should also then wait for the first service pack before installing it so I wouldn't use it untill at least late 2010. This coming from an IT tech.
